Niecy Nash’s moving family history is filled with both tragedy and triumph. Watch as she discovers the source of her personal resolve, on Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Comedian Niecy Nash came to me hoping to learn about her enslaved ancestors. Our search soon focused on her fourth-great-grandfather, a man named Aaron Cobb. Aaron lived in Union County, Arkansas in the years after the Civil War and we wondered if he might have been enslaved by a white planter, named Azariah Cobb, who lived in that same county before the war.

We found our answer in the estate records of Azariah’s father-in-law. They show that Aaron was given to Azariah’s wife when Aaron was 13-years-old.
