New Project – U.S. Southern Claims Commission, Disallowed and Barred Claims, 1871-1880

Our next project is a little different than the typical projects we have been indexing.  The U.S. Southern Claims Commission, Disallowed and Barred Claims, 1871-1880,  is comprised of case files with claims submitted by Union sympathizers who lived in the South during the Civil War for reimbursements of property lost due to Army confiscations.  The claims you will see were all disapproved.  From these case files we will be keying the names of the claimants and the witnesses; the claimant had to supply two witnesses who had known the claimant for 5 years and who would testify that they did own the property that was taken.  Since the files range in size from a couple pages to hundreds of pages there is a high likelihood that you could download several image sets that don’t have any names to be keyed.  You can review the five form types we will be identifying here.

If you have questions regarding this project please post them on the Discussion page or this message board thread.

Happy Keying!
