Pepperoni Pizza Recipe from The Detroit Free Press

Today just so happens to be #NationalPizzaDay, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a crispy, homemade pizza recipe from the 1950 Detroit Free Press. Roll, toss, and sauce up your dough, top with a plethora of cheese and slices of pepperoni, and you’ll have yourself a perfect pizza pie to share with your friends…or not!

  • 1/2 Cup of Cake Yeast
  • 3 Cups of Flour
  • 1 Cup of Lukewarm Water
  • Pinch of Salt
  • 1/2 Cup of Tomatoes
  • 1/2 Cup of Tomato Puree
  • 2 Teaspoons of Oregano
  • 1 Teaspoon of Garlic Salt
  • 1 Pound of Mozzarella Cheese
  • 6 oz. of Pepperoni


  • Combine flour, water, salt, and cake yeast
  • Blend together with your hands until dough is formed
  • Form dough into a ball
  • Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for three hours
  • Sprinkle flour on your work surface
  • Press into dough with fingertips to flatten
  • Toss dough until thin
  • Spread tomato sauce on your pizza dough
  • Add oregano and garlic salt
  • Top with cheese, pepperoni, and anything else you would like to add
  • Bake at 450º for 15-20 minutes
