Just as fatherhood has changed since our own fathers’ and grandfathers’ generations, so too has the way we shop for Father’s Day. Gone are the days of flipping through catalogues for just the right gift to express our love; instead, we’re scrolling through our favorite sites to find the perfect token of our appreciation.
In the U.S., Mother’s Day reigns as the big parenting holiday when it comes to spending, but Father’s Day is still big for retailers—and its popularity grows every year. According to the National Retail Federation’s 2015 Father’s Day Spending Survey, the average person was expected to spend $115 on gifts, with national spending projected to reach $12.7 billion. The survey also found that 75 percent of Americans planned to celebrate the holiday.
While shopping habits, tastes, and technology have evolved right alongside parenting styles, today’s dads still share a thing or two in common with their forefathers. Some Father’s Day gifts will always be classics, from grilling gear to the latest tech device. Check out this slideshow to see how these favorite Father’s Day gifts have shifted to suit the modern dad.
