Your ancestor may not always be listed in records with the first name he or she was given at birth. Over the last few months, we introduced a series of blog posts featuring commonly-used nicknames that you may run across in your research. If you’re not finding your ancestors in the records, try searching for them with some of these variants.

Some nicknames were more common in various regions, and some nicknames not commonly-used today, were widely-used by our ancestors. It can be helpful to browse records from the time and place in which your ancestor lived to see what first names and nicknames were common.

Today, we review some commonly-used nicknames for first names starting with letters G-J,

  1. Anna

My gr-grandmother was Gertrude, and one of her daughters, also Gertrude, had the nickname “Tootie.”

  2. k micklin

So many of the Hannah, Hanna and even Johanna named women I worked on often show up later as Anna

  3. Richard Barnes Young

I am hopeful that the completed list will have a search feature that has been indexed in both ways, i.e. given name AND nick name. That way, if I have a “Liddy” or a “Dickie” I would be able to search on those nick names as well as searching on any known (of record) given names. This would be a great tool.

  4. Maryann rice

I’m looking for Ida pearl lamirand/savage she had 8 girls one was my mother Edna Lou Almirante.
