The Postcard Poser is back! – May 2012

Posted by jmorrice on 15 May 2012 in General

Can you guess the location of this Postcard poser? The picture below dates from around 1902 and the building remains to this day but has latterly changed its use.

For those who are new to this feature on our blog,  we share a postcard-style photo taken somewhere in the UK. It could be a particular property, a famous landmark, or just a view of the town centre. All you have to do is tell us where the photo was taken in the comments section below.

No clue.
Looks a bit Midlands/Northern.
Looks like a radio transmitter in the centre, but extremely unlikely in 1902 – more likely a flagpole.
Tramlines in the street, with power lines above. Could be any one of a thousand different cities or towns.

Well done Bob Donkin! You got it. Chatham Town Hall was the most expensive project announced by Chatham Town Council in the 19th century. The building work started in 1898, and was completed in January 1900. The new building provided offices for various council departments, as well as a council chamber.

In the late 20th century Chatham Town Council was merged with neighbouring councils to form Medway Council, leaving the old Town Hall surplus to requirements. It was converted into a 400 seat theatre, and now goes by the name of the Brook Theatre.

Keep an eye out for our next Postcard poser. Coming soon!:)
