I also find Ancestry invaluable for much more than tracing my own family's fascinating history. It is a very useful tool for researching social history. I am constantly being side tracked to investigate the lives and ancestors of my family's neighbours, friends and work colleagues. This leads on to trying to find out more about the places they lived and worked in.

Hi Annabel,
My great grand father came from the UK around 1860 to south africa. I would like to trace his family but don't know exactly where he' was from. except what my late dad told me. I've magaed to go as far back as 1847 where a man by his name was from East London. he was Arhur Frederick Crowder. He married a local African woman and thats where we all come from.
Regards,
Peter
