Thank you for replying but your comments are a complete waste of time and do not address the point that I made.

I may be away and not therefore able to access Ancestry on 15 October so therefore one of the databases that is (if I understand the FREE offer correctly) available only from the start of 15/10 until end of 15/10 will not be available at all to me.

Is that right? - is it sensible? If it is a database that I am interested in I will not be able to assess its attractiveness.

I currently have a 6 month free Essentials membership (having bought Family Tree Maker) and I have set up a Tree (peterwscott1983) and I am now wanting to see what else may be available in a Worldwide subscription from Ancestry compared to other genealogy market offers and this FREE offer seemed a good way to do so. Like most FREE offers it is rather transparent and really not very practical marketing, in view of my point above.

I'm registered with Ancestry, I received the email offering this 15-record free access - but where's the access, the password to see the records? No link visible so far.

Is this the same S S Death Index which has been available for years -- for free -- on Rootsweb at
http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/?

The SSDI can also be searched for free on the LDS website at

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=ssdi/search_ssdi.asp&clear_form=true

but I'm not sure how long it's been available there.

And Cyndi's List has quite a few links to the SSDI at http://www.cyndislist.com/us/social-security/ssdi/.

Lastly, the dates covered by the Index should be prominently and clearly mentioned because this is a vital and important piece of info for researchers. Under FAQs, some dates and background history of the SSDI are mentioned but I didn't see relevent dates otherwise. Did I miss them?

Not much use at the moment as it can't be attached to the tree! Same thing happened with the free access to the passenger lists and not being able to attach anything until around day 2/3.
