It turns out that queen of country music Carrie Underwood is related to another American idol: Abraham Lincoln.
Carrie was born and raised in Oklahoma, but her OK roots are actually fairly recent. Back in the late 1700s, she had an ancestor who had moved from Pennsylvania to Kentucky: Abraham Lincoln.
This wasn’t the Abraham Lincoln. The 16th president of the United States with this Abe’s grandson. This Abraham Lincoln was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, on May 13, 1744, moved with his family to Virginia in 1968, and 10 years later served as a militia captain during the Revolutionary War. He moved to Kentucky in 1781, where he was killed in an ambush in 1786. That same ambush also threated his son Thomas—who survived and grew up to have a son of his own whom he named Abraham, after his father.
Carrie’s relationship to President Lincoln comes through her great-grandfather Stanton M. Luke, who was married to Essene Elba Thompson. Essene was a 1st cousin 5 times removed of President Abraham Lincoln. Essene and Honest Abe’s common ancestor was the president’s grandfather and namesake.
Besides her link to one of America’s most famous presidents, Carrie’s family tree is full of folks from Texas, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri to go along with OK and KY. So maybe it’s no wonder she sings country music. It’s in her blood.
