Online Back-up Service Mozy Now Available through the Ancestry Store

MozyLogo_l.gifI was talking to a co-worker in the Ancestry Store this week and he mentioned that Mozy, an automatic online back-up service, is now available through the Ancestry Store. My mother, Lou Szucs, uses this product and is very happy with it and I’m thinking of trying it too. The service is $4.95 a month and Mom likes the comfort in the fact that it automatically backs up her files.

Since we’ve had a few tips in recent weeks (and another in Monday’s Ancestry Weekly Journal) I thought I’d put up the description here on the blog.

Mozy Online Backup
Do you have a backup copy of all your important computer files? What if all those countless hours spent researching, writing, building out the family tree and scanning photos were lost with a single hard drive crash? Think of Mozy Online Backup as an insurance policy for your important computer files. Unfortunately, every computer is vulnerable to hard drive crash, theft, virus attack, spyware and other forms of disaster. The good news is that Mozy Online Backup is an inexpensive and simple way to store a backup copy all your important computer files online for peace of mind when disaster strikes. You wouldn’t think of driving a car or buying a home without insurance. Don’t wait until the next computer disaster strikes to start thinking about your backup strategy!

Mozy Online Backup is simple to install and automatically backs up all your genealogy files, word documents, digital photos, financial documents, email and more. You don’t have to be a computer expert – just check the boxes next to the files you want to backup, schedule the times and Mozy does the rest. If you did have any questions about getting started, Mozy’s friendly support staff is available to assist you.

During the backup process, all files are encrypted on your computer with military grade, 448-bit Blowfish encryption. After the files are encrypted, they’re sent to Mozy’s world-class datacenter via a secure 128-bit SSL connection, the same type of encryption technology used for online banking. All encrypted data is stored on servers located in a locked room monitored by a 24/7/365 security team.

Award Winning
Mozy Online Backup was recently awarded the “Editors Choice Award” from PC Magazine, was selected as the best backup software from PC World and has been recommended by Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal, David Pogue of the New York Times and Christopher Null of Yahoo! Tech to name a few.

When Disaster Strikes
In the event that something bad did happen to your computer it’s simple to get your important files back so you can get back to your important research. You can either download your files free of charge from a web browser from any computer, or have Mozy copy your data to DVD’s and ship them to you via FedEx for a nominal fee.

Technical features

  • Open/locked file support – No need to close files in order to back them up as Mozy backs up all files that are in-use or locked including Family Tree Maker, Quicken, Word, Excel and Outlook .pst files.
  • Automatic or scheduled backup – Tell Mozy when to perform your backups. Automatic is the simplest method in which backups are performed while your computer is not in use. Scheduled backups can be performed daily or weekly at a specified time of day.
  • Near Continuous Data Protection – Mozy automatically detects and backs up new and changed files every 2 hours or so.
  • Block level incremental backups – When a file is modified, Mozy is smart enough to backup just the portions of the file that have changed since the last backup which saves bandwidth and ensures future backups are lightning fast.
  • Bandwidth throttling – Throughout the day, you can tell Mozy to use more or less of your upload bandwidth so other higher priority services can run unimpeded.
  • 30 day archive – Mozy keeps a 30 days archive of all the files being backed up. If you want to grab a copy of the GEDCOM you were working on 7, 14 or 30 days ago, you have that option.

System Requirements

  • Windows 2000 or newer
  • Mac OS X
  • Broadband internet connection (Cable, DSL, T1, Fiber etc.)
  • 500 MHz processor (minimum)
  • 256 MB RAM (min)
  • 2GB Free hard drive space

  1. I’ve used Mozy for over a year now, and although I’ve never had to use I’ve been very happy with the product. It’s nice to have the peace of mind knowing that all of my files are safe.

  2. For online backup news, information and articles, there is an excellent website:

This site lists more than 400 online backup companies and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis.

Any one can add their company in the directory. Just click on the “Search” button found at the top.

PS: Hey, check out the rankings of Mozy!

  3. I was extremely unsatisfied with Mozy. After they made an automatic update to the backup software on my computer in April it never ran properly again and my backup files at Mozy were extinguished several times. Their support was condascending rather than genuinely friendly. Thankfully, they refunded the rest of my subscription money and I am using what appears to be a much more reliable backup service now.

  4. I have tried to retrieve an older archived file and was not able to do so. I contacted Mozy and have not received any help. I am concerned that if I really need to retrieve an older version of a file, I will not be able to do so, and will not receive any help.

  5. I tried Mozy for a few weeks but had many problems with the ‘automatic’ backups. Their technical support was useless. When I did get it to work myself I was concerned that files which supposedly had been backed up in fact had not. I would not have known had I not manually checked, so I have doubts about the reliability of the service.

  6. I’ve have a very slow connection speed, has anyone used an online backup service with a slow speed connection? If so how satisfied are you with using an online backup method?

  7. I have been trying to use Mozy for the past 6 weeks. I run Mac OS X 10.4.9. So far I have been unable to make a full backup of my disk. I get no help whatsoever from their support desk. Then, still worse, the frequent crashes of the system caused by Mozy corrupted my system and I will now have to reload my system. All in all this has not been worth all the time I have invested and certainly not my subscription fee. Perhaps the Mac OS version will improve in the future but don’t try it now.

  8. I’ve been using Mozy for 6 months or more and on the whole I’m quite happy with it. I bought a new hard drive for my old computer and had no problem ‘restoring’ my backed up files. Then a month or two later I bought a new computer and once again had no problems retrieving my data from Mozy.
However there are times when the backups run less than smoothly. I’ve always had good response from Customer Support. One must realize that after all the cost is ONLY $4.95 per month for unlimited storage. I don’t know of any other off-site back up service with such a reasonable price for unlimited storage. Like the old adage says, You Get What You Pay For! And in my case, I feel I’m getting more than my money’s worth.

  9. I have been using Mozy’s backup system (the free version) for about 6 months and have been quite pleased with it. I initially had a question regarding customizing the files to be backed up to which they replied by email the next day. Then, upon acquiring a new desktop system recently, I was having difficulty accessing my account when it did not recognize my new computer. They again assisted by email the next day and explained step by step what I needed to do to access it. Armed with that information, I was able to access several archived folders and restore them to my new system. I sleep a lot better knowing that Mozy is automatically backing up key folders around the clock and that it will come to my rescue when/if needed.

  10. I’ve been using the Mozy Unlimited service for about 2 months now and am very happy with it. I had a scary experience with my computers hard drive a few weeks ago and Mozy saved the day. I haven’t ever had any bad experiences and would heartily recommend Mozy to anyone. I only had one contact with the support folks when I was first setting it up and they were very friendly and helpful.

  11. I stumbled across this blog and felt that I should add a comment.
