I loved watching Paula Deen and like her story. I too have deep southern roots but I was not shocked to find out that my ancestor owned slaves. My shock was finding out that I’m descended from freed Blacks. In tracing my father’s family I found out that my 4th great grandparents in the 1840 census of Virginia were listed as Mulatto” freed persons of color” it also lists them as owning slaves of which I now believe were their family members. By 1860 they were living in the free state of Ohio. I also found that by 1900 some of their descendants were passing for white. My gg- grandmother was one of them and so she married a white man. I believe most if not all of their children married white people. One of their sons, my g-grandfather married a white woman from Tennessee and they ended up moving to Alabama. My mission now is to find out if my 4th great grandparents were born free by means of their lineage or were they freed by an owner. There are so many questions that I may never find the answers to. One thing I do know is that if everything in my ancestry did not happen the way it did I would not be here today.
