I just wasted an hour trying to view the March 12 event. It runs for a few minutes and then repeats a segment in an endless loop. When will a corrected version be available?

# 970 Robert

I am totally amazed at the "answer" you have received as the solution has been an option in FTM since version 2.

Run your Outline tree

Either go to Format>Tree Format or what I do, right click in the tree and select Tree Format.

You will see a Size and Spacing area in the Tree Format dialog

What you do is set the maximum height in rows to what you need. If it is currently set at [say] 2 bump it up to 3 and click OK

If that does not work go to 4

The number of rows you need is related to the items to include and the font size, but what FTM is telling you is that you have a lot of items to include which won't fit in the number of lines that you have told the program to allow.

So if you want to keep all the items them increase the space, or reduce the number of items

These controls were added because the outline report is supposed to be a compact report so the program tries to save space.

So no need to buy the new version for this problem and in fact the outline report in FTM 2009 is formatted somewhat differently

A big tip

Next time you run the report (or any report or chart in FTM), right click on the report or chart to show all the options and controls in that particular view.

FTM up to 16 has excellent right mouse support and you should use it.

Have you installed the SP1 patch for FTM 2009?

Check your Help>About and it should show version 18.00.305

If it shows some earlier version of 18 you need to first install the SP1 Patch (Help>Check for Updates).

The SP1 patch contains the in program book

See also this link which describes the SP1 patch and also links on direct downloading

I don't know if this is the proper venue for my question but here goes: I watched the archival video of the March 12th presentation and learned how to make a book using FTM 2009. When I try on my computer on FTM 2009 I don't get the screen with the book to click on. I get a screen which tells me to upload my file to Ancestry.Com to publish the book. What's going on? Why can't I get the screen with the book publishing process on my computer?

I have Family Treemaker Version 11,
Love it. But the print on Outline Decendent Tree prints out New Roman Font size 6. If I try to raise the font size to 10 I get a message saying you have selected a combination of styles and fonts that are too large for this page size. Some of the information may not print. And it prints in font size 6.
I called last year and said I would buy the new version if you had corrected this problem. Did not get an answer. I'm trying again this year.

FTM 2009 Custom Report

The Custom Report will not run to fruition under the following conditions:

1 - Include all Fact Names
2 - Include Preferred and Non Preferred Facts
3 - Don't Include Blank Facts
4 - Include All Individuals -- In my case about 40,000 total individuals in data base

When I try to run the report under the above conditions it runs for a minute or so and then just stops --and no report is generated

Michelle would you please pass this along to the programmers -- I am sure it is just due to the potential size of the report

I have been able to run it successfully for about 2000 people

Thank You

I have used FTM now for 5 years and find it gets better every year but I would like to see some better controls on the report making...Give me the option of choosing the root individual instead of making me be on the page of the individual. I was in the middle of data entry on an ancestor when I needed a copy of an old report but it generated the wrong report. I would like to also see the option of excluding the deceased individuals from the calender if I want to. Would also like to see the option of selecting specific notes to print the reports and excluding other notes without having to delete them then re-enter them (ie. child adoption when the child doesn't know their adopted yet...Not having to print out Father or Mothers Name if I don't want to.) I would also like to see the option of having a person be non-blood or married to anyone but be added as a family member (ie. Boyfriend whom had lived with someone but produced no children.Or a Gay couple.) I would also like to see the option of printing out the family tree on more than 5 high.

Sorry to have to say this but family tree maker is far too complicated for me. i am just an average family tree reseacher, and spend hours trying to put things into the programe and when i have attached things from ancestry i cant find them anywhere in my tree, so its back to my old method of pen and paper

Have you installed the SP 1 patch?

What version of Windows are you using?

How much RAM do you have?

Is your virus checker up to date?

Is your computer otherwise running OK?

What are you doing when it crashes?

I presume you are talking about an Ancestry.com subscription?

I suggest that you ring them and sort it out
