I signed up for the new webinar. I received an e-mail to remind me. It said I could add a reminder to my calendar. The reminder was for November 19, 2008 so was the webinar!

Help!

I keep getting out of memory errors when merging files and many times in the book-making section. What is being developed to prevent these types of problems?

Regards,

When using the Calander feature, I am only able to use the “Immediate Family” choice, when I choose “All Individuals or Selected Individuals” I get a blank screen. I checked to make sure I have all the updates and I do seem to be updated. I would love to use the feature with all of my ancestors in my tree if possible.
Thank you, Gini

Can you please correct the link to the regisstration to reflect the 12 March, 8pm US EST!

Let us know with a new blog topic when this has been set.

Michelle,

I also have registered for the webinar. For clarity you may want to change the two wedinar info pages announced date/time from: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 8:00pm EST – to Thursday, March 12, 2009 8:00 PM EDT.

Regards,

Hank

I’ll put back the registration link when the system is working correctly. Sorry for the inconvenience!

Is it possible to attach a file I’ve found on Ancestry.com, such as a census record, to a name in my Family file in FTM 2009? I know I can attach a record to a name in a family file If I’ve uploaded it to Ancestry.com but what about before I upload the file?

Here is the link to register for the webinar:

I’m having lots of problems with the publishing component. I tried to submit the problems through your help facility but received “initiation failed” error messages.

Prblm #1: Created new text document in book. Added a photo. Everything fine. Added a second photo and then deleted it. FTM2009 (18.0.0.305) crashes.

Question #2: Why do you insist on adding an integer to the end of Item Name of a Item Property?

Prblm #2: Create a new report in a book with the correct individual selected. Later I highlight the entry and it regenerates the report with the individual that is currently selected. Why does it automatically regenerate the report when there is a button in the control section that allows you to regenerate the report.

It is great to have the calendar back. I have two requests for the developers regarding the calendar.

First, I have two family members with leap day issues. One chose leap day for a wedding, the second was born on leap day. I would guess that the testing of the calendar took place in 2008, a leap year, and the problem was probably not seen, but in 2009, which is not a leap year, including these two persons and their special dates causes the calendar to freeze. When I change the dates to February 28 or March 1, the calendar works. It would be great to see the program fix these and default to February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years rather than freeze and require a workaround which must be undone in the leap year.

The second issue is I cannot find a way to eliminate wedding anniversaries of divorced couples. Even excluding the non-blood related divorcee does not exclude the anniversary. Please consider adding an option to exclude these anniversaries which some folks may not want to remember. My workaround is to exclude both people, but that excludes the divorced family member’s birthday.

Thanks for putting the calendar back in and thanks for responding during the webinar.

Jim

Michelle,

Thanks for fixing the link.

Just for complete confirmation. You state that the webinar is March 12 at 8pm EST. In fact DST starts on the 8th in the US and the webinar registration makes the webinar March 12 at 8pm DST!

We’ll presume the webinar registration is correct and it IS 8pm DST.

You may want to post a blog entry just to clarify.

Thanks and looking forward to the webinar. We’ve promoted to our group and those in Sydney who can be available for the 11am Fri 13th presentation time will no doubt do their best to attend.

My question is how to add names and pictures on Tree Maker

Alice

Why was “All-In-One” tree removed, and are there plans to bring it back? That’s an issue that keeps me from installing any upgrades, as I have access to a plotter.

I am new to ancestry research and have only used my Ancestry.Com deluxe membership and have built my tree there.
I have the most basic of all questions:
Why do I need Family Tree Maker 2009 software and what can it do for me to enhance my research and recording keeping? What am I missing out on by not having any tree making software? Thank you most sincerely,
Gayle

I have Version 9 of the Family Tree Maker. If I purchase the 2009 version, is there a way to transfer all the data and text to the new version?

I haven’t bought the software yet, but plan on using the software on my MyFamily site. Is it the same. I have a dialup connection that only works about half speed–28.8 kbps
Is this too slow for me to do the webinar?

i wish family tree maker was set up more like ancestry.com because it shows the sons and daughters under parent name. Any chance of that happening

My question is about adding nicknames to individuals on a Ancestry.com family tree.

Nicknames were often used on documents instead of given names. What is the best way to include a person’s nickname to ensure the most efficient search results?

Thanks so much!
Tami

Can Family Tree Maker be used on a Mac yet?

I have given up on using FTM until material from Ancestry.Com is automatically downloaded into FTM. Entering material twice is cumbersome.

When will FTM and Ancestry.Com be integrated?

I am using FTM 2005 & have problems saving files to a DVD. Would like to save several files to the same DVD and upgarde them as necessary. Does 2009 correct all of these problems?

I have people and events that are the same except when I typed some of the names, I made small changes, using FTM 2005.
Is there a way to find all people and events associated to a place name and similar names in order that I can use and replace them with only one name in FTM 2009

#7 Ron

Yes, FTM automatically saves Ancestry records (i.e., Census, Birth records, etc.) to your person when you merge the Ancestry record into FTM.

Once you’ve found the record in the Web Workspace, click the “Merge” button (it’s next to the “Search result detail” heading). The image associated with that record will automatically be saved to your FTM person. In addition, FTM will automatically fill in the “source” information for that record.

Note: If you don’t want the image to be saved to FTM, you can stop FTM from importing it. When you’re at the “Web Merge Wizard” dialog box, click “Summary.” In the top of the dialog, you’ll see a checkbox called: “Items to merge: Media.” This checkbox is usually checked. If you don’t want to merge the image, just uncheck the box. Hope this helps.

Can you develop a method so that a user can generate a report with the reference numbers (ID) on left side in sequential order with the person’s name, DOB and POB and DOD all on one line to the right of reference number (ID)? I assign a reference number and use that as an index. As a work around, I imported (shared) the report to an Excel spread sheet and with a lot of cutting and pasting was able to generate a report with that format.

Question – When I add a Religion Fact, the program uses was in the publish report. Example: Religion (I add Catholic) The report reads – Religion was Catholic. I want to change was to is. How can I do this.

I have FTM version 16. How would I transfer files from FTM ver 16 to FTM 2009?

When are we going to get the book back as it was in Family Tree 16?

Thanks Bud

I put the Family Tree Maker 2009 on my computer and I got an error
“Authentication with the server failed” Because of this error I can’t
reegister my Family Tree Maker. How do I get rid of the error?

Can you help me, i´need more information about the my (CaseID:1010361), Ancenstry is grandefull, thanks a have a nice day.

I purchased the social security death registry from ancestry.com a few years ago. It does not work with the 2008 version and I am told by ancestry.com that it will not work with 2009

Apparently my computer speed is not adequate. Is it possible for you to send me a print out of the first webinar and also the new one.
Thank you Beverly Hill

A question . . . is the new Family Tree Maker an update to Version 16 or a completely new software package?

Why is this program NOT compatible with my older version of FTM(2006). Thank goodness I backed up my files on another computer, because they were a mess.

I have Family tree maker 2009, but I also have some unique entry problems, like this one: How would one enter a person who was born female and became male (transgender)?

Are there any plans to bring back the feature of automatically assigning a reference number to an individual when you add people to your tree? Since I started with a previous version, which did that very thing, and now I am using the ‘09 version, which does not, I feel left hanging and have to fend for myself.

Adding Dates:
I would like to be able to insert Q(uarter) numbers directly into the date field, for example, “Q3 1946″ as this precicely mimics the quarters used in UK BMD records.
I do realise that this could aternatively be entered as “Jul-Sep 1946″ however this is not as easy to read as the “Q” number, snd requires extra typing.
The online tree DOES in fact allow this format (if you answer “allow date entry as it is”) when saving a record, and I note that it also recognises the year part of the phrase perfectly well.
Similar functionality would be extremely welcome in FTM 2009 – is this possible?

Best Regards,
Trevor.

2 questions:
A -I do get a written copy of the data I have in my family tree?
B I do I transmit my data from family tree to ancestry?
Thank you very much

I would like to know how to make the font smaller when I click on the FTM-I have been sent answers but none help-
As soon as I click onto FTM
the font becomes really large
I can’t see the whole page to do any work-

I loved FTM until Verson 2009. I find it very confusing after being a Family Tree Maker advocate since the beginning.

I have been trying to print Descendant Charts with Divorces, however, I have two people in my files who are divorced but never re-married and I cannot get the information into my system. Why?

It would be nice to have a feature which enable the genealogist to search by location. For example, I’m going to a research center for a certain area next week. It would be helpful if I could get a listing of everyone that had any connection at all with that area from whatever branch of the family tree.

I was using FTM 2009 version and I was unable to get a family view with that version. I have switched back to FTM 16. When you get an up grade on FTM 2009 that will offer the family view, I would consider using it again

I have FTM 2009 but have not received anything regarding the “automatic update” to my software. How can I obtain?
Thanks

I am having installation problems — FTM 2009 installs but won’t open — just says I didn’t close it properly — but I never had it open, so how could I have not closed it!

While “resolving place names” I needed to be able to click on a few certain places and be taken to the place/site where it was found so that I could figure out what the problem really was. The other three choices could not help me correct the place name. Can that be done in the future, please?

I wrote to Family Tree Maker but they never answered…question is I have hard copy of ancestor tree and would like to know if I can scan it into FTM or do I have to type in all the names etc.

My Family tree 16 is damaged how can I get that fixed since I only have the CD for Family Tree 2005.

Also I don’t like the book in Family tree 2008 I don’t want to upload it to the Internet I would like to print it myself. That is why I don’t like your 2008 Family Tree. I feel as if you are forcing me to give you my personal information that I do not care to share. I liked the set up of Family Tree 16 better.

I had been using FTM2006, and then upgraded my PC and now have Vista Operating System. FTM2006 would not print, after discussions with Helpline I bought FTM 2009. Many of the features of 2006 now appear to be lost. My main desire at this time is to print out a “register” that will show all of the family descendents of a ancestor. I have several instances where there are second marriages, and have not been able to show those individuals. Need to include them since in several cases they have been more helpful in gathering information than those of the first marriage. Is it possible to do this, or am I missing the concept as to how to do it?

Thanks, Ron

A second question that I failed to include above. The book feature that was on 2006 is apparently no longer available on 2009. I would like to just add the information that I have obtained since I first sent a copy of the book to relatives. Can not do that with 2009. Will updates include that? Was a nice feature, especially to us that do not like to spend any more time on the computer than necessary.
Ron

I recently upgraded from FTM 2005 to 2009 and, after a brief adjustment period, am very happy with it. I do have one frustration, however. I would like very much to be able to determine the order of listed facts in an individual’s profile.
Thanks, Joe.

What is the simplest way to transfer picture files from Picasa to FTM ?
Also how do I print out the index and print out the home persons relationship with all others in the tree ?

Thanks

I am using 2009 version – when I get those green leaves – how do I use them? I bought the Official Guide to Family Tree Maker – I look the info over but how do I get it into my database?
I prefer using version 16.

Best regards, R.D. Fread

Why do you put up so much information when the search is exact?

It gets to be somewhat frustrating when you have to search through so much, either the factual information is there or it is not. I understand when you have incomplete information showing, but with exact information there must be a way to narrow it.

Other than that I have been very pleased with the program.

When I only have an initial for a first name and place that initial in the “first name” section followed by the last name in the “last name” section, why does the result always bring up the names of individuals placing that initial as a middle initial? How can I get the system to place that initial in the first position for my results?

Has the ahnentafel numbering problem been fixed? I have reported this several times and been promised a fix but it hasn’t happened as far as I know.

I have 2005 and when I make a book, and try to save it in the PDF mode, I can not open or find the file. This is on a backup, as the orignal was lost i do not have this problem with a new file. I can save that to my documents no problem than add it where needed.

I often have a situation where my program closes when I add a new member to my tree. I compress my file, but it only compresses by less than 1%. what is the problem

I have FTM 2006 on an old computer and wish to reinstall on a new computer. Cannot locate installation disc. Where can I locate a replacement?

Can you have someone who knows how to construct grammatically correct sentences redo the Register Report to make it more readable? For example, change “Her death on” to “She died on”; “Her birth on” to “She was born on”; “Their marriage on” to “They were married on”; etc.

I am embarrassed to send the Register Reports to relatives, so I spend countless hours editing them to improve their readability.

I would like a version of FTM for MAC OS 10.5.6!!! Will this ever happen or do I need to purchase a competitor’s software? I am an Ancestry member and own FTM 2009 as well and would rather purchase a product from you guys.

Running FTM in a virtual machine such as Parallels, etc. on a Mac is not the same as a native Mac version by any stretch.

Thanks

I am looking for my Ancestry in reguards to the American Civil War. Can we find this out?

I have an ancestry.com site which has over 16,000 people including 500 pictures and stories which is also documented by birth, death, census records, etc. I recently purchased FTM 2009 and downloaded my file from Ancestry.com to it and the pictures, stories do not download. The source of the records show in FTM but will not allow me to look at the records. What did I do wrong?

Kinship Report, I used to see all the relationships between two people on the Kinship report. Now, FTM2009 only shows 1 result. Why was this removed or am I missing something in the “Help” function?

Thanks for any help?

Please help me understand how I can share my family tree from FTM with members of my family across the country.

1)Do they all have to be FTM members in order to view the Family Tree? 2) Can I personalize the Family Tree so that they and their immediate family are at the base of the tree? Thank you, Steve B

In Sept.,2008, I received an offer for a free upgrade to FTM 2009. I responded with the coupon code provided. I later received a message that the online store was temporarily overwhelmed and I was instructed to resubmit with the new coupon code, which I did. I have never received the FTM 2009 upgrade.

See number 60. I too would like a version for Mac. I have used Macs since 1984, and do desktop publishing on them, so I am not going to switch computers. I run Word:Mac on the Mac, but do not use a program that allows PC software, and don’t plan to get one.

I do not like the new 2009 so much so I uninstalled it and took the program back to the store for credit. I’m back to using version 16 it’s more user friendly and some of the reports I did not like. I have told my friends not to buy your new 2009 program.

Type your comment here.

Sometimes family group info is found on two separate census pages. When using FTM 2009 online to meld census data into my file, is there an easy way to include the second census page?

How do I eliminate shakey leafs that do not pertain to my family?

Please identify the file name(s) of the file viewer used to viewing ancestry files online. I keep inadvertently deleting the file(s) daily each time I wipe my HDU clean of extraneous internet and temporary files and folders.

My wife’s father left her Mom – and her brothers – some 59 – yes – 59 years ago. It appears he is interred in a Veterans cemetery in Oregon. My wife would like to know more about her biologic dad. If we were to visit the grave-site town, what would you suggest? Contact the local new paper? Visit the Hall of Records?… check the phone book.. start making calls? If he started another family, how would we be able to contact them… and would they want to be contacted?

In FTM 2009 how do you print an alpha list of all people in the database? In 2006 I printed an alpha list with each one on one line and I had Last Name, First Name, Spouse Name, Date of Birth, Date of Marriage, Date of Death — all on one line for each person.

Thank you for restoring the desktop book creation feature in FTM 2009.

Are you starting to get ahead of your clients ? Some of us that are not highly proficient on the computer are getting confused with all the options. I would like to see a plain input program with a Family printout. The more features caters to the highly proficient computer users and confuses us less equipted. Can you market a basic model and save us the angst.

1 – Any plans for a Linux version or a way to run FTM in Linux.

2 – Show the spouses name in the “Index of Individuals”. With many individuals with the same given and surname, know who is married to who would make locating the individual that I’m looking for much quicker.

3 – Adding a ‘what if’ to the reports, ie ‘if birth location = sumner county’.

Thanks, wayne

I was extremely happy to see books back in FTM 2009 but it’s still not what it was in FTM 16. I liked the ability to control report content. Currently I have no options on what is included in a report. I also had books already created in my file but they have all been “lost” in FTM 2009. So I am still using FTM 16 for my books. When will all of the book functionality of FTM 16 be available in FTM 2009? It’s becoming very labor intensive keeping 2 databases going. I also lost all of my media that was attached in my FTM 16 file. It will take me hundreds of hours to attach again. That media is in the file when will I be able to see it again?

Thanks

When using “Resolve Placenames”, it would be nice to include the word “county” after the name of the county. FTM2009 wants to remove the word “county” from my description. Examples: “Russell County, Virginia” trys to update to Russell, Virginia. Under this senario you don’t know whether its a city or a county. Please consider adding the word “County” after its name.

I have two issues with an update and am afraid to do it.
1. When we all had to change from Ancestry Tree to Family Tree Maker I lost 10 yrs worth of work…and still don’t know if I have re-entered all I had. Since your FTM didn’t and won’t recognize a back up data file from the original, AFZ. FTM says they don’t support ATM and I can’t get a disk.

2. Why does your program change all documented information to say it was found on Ancestry .com in the documentation file. I have found a lot of things, that weren’t on Ancestry OR prior to Ancestry putting on line. No program should have the right to CHANGE data that is put into the program.

My Familytreemaker program is corrupted. I cannot open any scrapbook items and I sometimes have lines across the page. If I get a newer version, will that correct it?

I have a lot of pictures that need to be linked to several people each. Unlike normal windows applications, in FTM 08, you cannot “control, click” to highlight more than one person at a time. It is incredibly time consuming to have to click New, find the person, enter, click new, find the other person, etc. Will this be rectified in 2009?

Is there a way to delink individuals in FTM 2009.

I am trying to decide whether or not to purchase Family Tree Maker. I’ve gone through the information and demos on your website and I like some of the features — especially dupe-checking — that look like they would streamline the tree-making process considerably … IF they interface well with my online tree at Ancestry.com. Does FTM or the 2009 upgrade include some type of synchronizing feature that would automatically (or nearly so) keep the FTM files on my hard drive sinced with my records on Ancestry.com?

For some reason I get an extra spouse on some of my kin. There is no was to delete a blank spouse. I have 2 on the spouse window and there is only one listed. Is there a way to delete a blank spouse?

I would like to sign up but I have no access to my FTM. When I contacted Ancestry about it I was told you are not compatible with Windows 8. Will you be working out the bugs for people like me that really like your product.

I get a message on every print page that tells me that some of the information is outside the allowed margins. But, I print and it’s perfect. It’s just annoying to get this message every time I print a page and have to delete it. How do I get rid of this incorrect message?

Not sure I will be able to take part in the webinar. I do have a question and have not been able to find any place that addresses this problem.

I do a lot of merging from the site to my files and many times I end up with five or six sources that are exactly the same or only slightly different. I am wondering if there is any way to merge these all into one souce. Ex: I get 5 sources that say individual was born on such and such date. Some may have more or less information than the other one. I know when making a merge if data is the same you can discard it, but it still keeps the source.

why isn’t there a feature to print the timelines in Family Tree Maker?

Any plans for a version of FTM compatible with Mac OSX? If not, can I please be removed from your FTM email list?

Thanks

I forgot something else. When resolving place names I have had some problems with places that were pre Civil War. for example changing Virginia to West Virginia etc. Also places that no longer exist or have changed names it doesn’t recognise. Also I don’t like that it changes places I have recorded the county to just name and state and USA. this can be very confusing in places where a town and county have the same name. One problem I had was my 2nd great grandfather was born in Marshall County, Virginia, Your program tries to make it the town of Marshall in Virginia, or change it to Marshall, West Virginia both which are wrong.

I have seen variations of this question on the blog but it bears repeating as it relates to all versions of the FTM software. I have the FTM 2004 version. can i transfer all my info with out having to re-enter it manually? OR transfer it from ancestry.com ? without one of these options it would be tough to sell me the FTM2009

thanks,
Ian

When we get the reminder email, can it include a clarified time, because I will have enough trouble being involved in North Queensland Australia if it is not clear whether you are on daylight time or not.

At the moment New York is 15 hours behind us which makes the webinar on at 5.00am Australian Easter Standard time.

Is this going to be correct on the day?

Since I am on dial-up, sadly I cannot attend your webinar. I would like to know if there is currently a way to load a record into the my tree via some link within the program? I am currently copy/pasting data into my tree and find it’s consuming a lot of my time.

Thanks

In FTM2005 I was able to enter siblings without entering their parents. However, in FTM2009 you have to enter at least one parent before you can enter siblings. As a result, all my “parentless” sibling relationships were lost when I imported my old FTM into 2009. It took me days to identify and reconstruct those families. Please fix this for future users who upgrade.

I am with Garret who asked why was the ‘all-in-one’ tree removed. It was the reason I bought family tree maker years ago and if it does not come back I will move on to some other product that has it. It was the one and only item at the time that really made your product stand out from the crowd.

Hello, Will there be any way that I can check in later to see what will be on the webinair on March 12 as I expect to be away from computer use. I am very interested. Dorothy

When I have access to a PC, I can’t access a family tree that I made eight years ago to correct some erroneous information I had at the time because I’m not using the same email server anymore and you won’t send a password to my new email address EVEN THO I’ve sent you all identifying support information.

How can I change/update the data.

Also, Do you yet have a Mac format for FTM?

I’ve sent many emails requesting an answer but have not received one reply.
I see Barbara #19 has asked the same question to which no reply has yet been posted in this article.
I see

How can I import a ‘book” created under a previous version of Tree Maker?

Sometimes when adding birth or death dates it shuts the program down.

What am I doing wrong, or is it a problem with the program?

Thanks

Roger Graul

If you move FTM to another computer, or wish to reorganize your hard disk, is there an easy way to change the path to the media files so that all the links still work?

I can no longer scan pictures to put in the family history. Please tell me how to do this or is it no longer available in this new version. Glad to have the calendar back. Arvis

I just got he 2009, never having this program before and I am not liking it all!
I downloaded the Ged from ancestor and it did not transfer any sources or notes. Also when I am searching in Ancestor via FTM, I still can’t merge a source. Up in the right corner where it has you and relationships to the people you click on, for everyone it shows no relationship. Even with my parents, it says no direct relationship. So needless to say, I think I will continue to use Ancestor. come. I can’t imagine having to go through FTM and having to enter everything again for 1,800 people!

A question for Ancestary is when are they going to make the interaction between FTM trees and Public trees on Ancestary such that you do not have to maintain two trees in two different places.
FTM would only contain the private information whilst updated information would be held on the public internet site.

How do you use the calendar so that it reminds you of the birthdates (and some of the death dates) of all of those on your family tree? Also, how do you periodically change the “key” person on the family tree that the system selects as the “head” of the tree when one uses the “publishes” feature and the tree that has the pictures of the person on them? Thank you!

On Feb. 5th I reported that after installing the newest version of FTM 2009, that the Pedigree chart did not number the generations correctly.
The parameters are set to print individual numbers with name. Start person is 1. But the start person on the pedigree chart is 2 and so on.

My correspondence has been with Member Solutions with the last being on Feb. 11 with Cassandra of Member Solutions and the response was “Thank you for submitting this error in our programming. This issue will be evaluated and if required will be forwarded to our development team. I will contact you directly if any additional information is needed or when the issue is corrected.”

Can you please tell me when this “bub” will be fixed?

1 How do you get rid of an ancestry hint when you do not feel it applies to your ancester in FTM?

2 When using the merge feature in FTM, sometimes the media will merge and other times it does not, even if the media merge box is checked.

3 When merging some family trees in FTM, all the census data merges from that persons family tree. I have no chance to merge the media data. What can be done about this?

when r u gona to put the publishing the book on the family tree 2009 i went to buy the new one the full version because the free version u mailed me doesnt not have the print the book part. i thought the new full version on 2009 would have it but when i went to buy it i looked and it did not have it I asked one of the help guys @ the store and they said it wasnt on the 2009 yet. so what version r u gona to put it in. I dont like to have to go to the internet because i only have dialup and its to slow to make up a book online. so it would be GREAT if u guys would put it in one of the versions and i will not buy no more till it is in one of them. i have the versions 16, 10 and 2008 that i have bought and the free 2009.The 2009 wont let me use my earlier trees and i have to redo my tree all over its a pain because i have over 1900 people in it. Thanks Jeannie

I will be out of town on March 12th, will you be posting any info after that regarding the info shared at the webinar ?

Genie

I have been uon Ancestry.com for awhile now.

1. I would like to know if this will compatible with Vista 64?
2. Will there be an upgrade fee or do we have to buy it outright?
3. Will I be able to download GEDcom files?
4. Will I be able to download from Ancestry.com the work that I have on there?
5. Since we can access the Social Security Death Index from Ancestry.com, can we get the 2009 version without them?

I may have more questions later. LOL

I am in the process of double checking and entering my sources for my people.

When I enter a book source, the name of the author appears first on the source list. I normally look for the book title, not the author. Can this be switched?

In the Notes Section, are you planning to make it “Word” friendly? By that I mean, the commands that are used in a Word doc can be used in the notes section. ‘CTRL & Delete’ keys do not delete the next word nor does ‘CTRL & Backspace’ delete the previous word.

Took some getting used to, but really like the new 2009. Just need some time to figure out how to use everything!

Is there a way to change or determine the order of source citations after they are entered? For example, I might cite the 1910 census as the source for a person’s name, then later find them in the 1880 census, and then in the 1900 census, and I enter those source citations in the order I find them. I’d like to put the citations in chronological order after I’ve entered them. This would be similar to the function for changing the order of spouses after they are entered. Is there a way to change the order of source citations after they are entered, or can you add this feature?

What is the difference between the different editions of FTM 2009? You have Standard, Deluxe and Platuim but I have not been able to find any difference. They all seem to give the same.

I finally gave up on 2009 and went back to v16; a lot more user friendly!

I have FTM version 16 – -is FTM 9 an upgrade?

I am using FTM 2009 on a Windows XP computer. I have created a custom field to keep track of what documentation that I have collected. When I print the family tree out using the Extended Family Chart it shows the title of the field…but non of the information I have entered. I have tried to go through the help service but haven’t received any answers. I would also like to know how to get rid of the “leaf” for sources that I have determined are not correct so that I don’t have to constantly go back and check to see if it is something new.
Thanks

I went from FTM 16 to FTM 2009. I agree with the gentleman missing the all-in-one tree and I also miss the ancestor tree. In the past I have given relatives their own ancestor tree as Christmas presents but FTM 2009 only does descendant trees. The pedigree view is not the same.

I also miss the FTM 16 fan tree because the 2009 version include blanks for missing relatives – a bummer when when there is a single parent and no way of finding the other parent.

As a result I an entering everything new into both versions just so I can get the reports in the format I want. Obviously it is twice the effort to do both and I am more likely to forget to update one of the programs.

Too late to make the story short… but is there any thought to update the trees with the old formats?

I have ver 2009, but I’m a loyal ver 16 user. Do you intend to continue to support ver 16 and make improvements?

I have a high quality web site with pictures etc on Genealogy.com are there any plans to link these sites to Ancestry.com com trees? If not why not. We feel abandon over there.

Help! In one of your webinars you said you were bringing back the all in one tree in version 9 which I now use. When I called support they said it was called the descendant tree. It is not all in one. I only get one tree. Plus I don’t like the footnote feature on this program.

Usually I send my tree to my cousin who has version 6 and he sends the file to Kinkos for the all in one tree. This gives us the two big trees that we have not linked yet plus all the small ones. Now I read that version 9 is not compatible with version 6 from one of the bloggers. Is this true?

Help! Thanks!

Judy

I just purchased 2009 version about 2 weeks ago. Will I have to buy an upgrade for these latest improvements?

In past webinars, I couldn’t see the whole picture and couldn’t move it with the arrows. I hope I don’t have to guess what you’re pointing at this time.

Don’t know if this is where I should be asking this or not, but, why are the
“Family Trees” in the Family Tree CD software located at the bottom of the drop down list…to where I ALWAYS have to scroll down to get to them. (Nothing like having to get past all the US census info when you are searching for ancesters in the middle ages!!

On the Append/Merge option, why can’t the match up screen be full screen, so that we can actually read the names in the pedigree matchup/compare area?

Why is it that when I add someone that was born before Christ (BC) instead of (AD) to my tree from ancestry.com, that their place of birth automatically becomes British Columbia?

Thanks,
Bill

Would you please tell me how to merge sources…. like: 1930 Census and U.S. Census – 1930.

Does the 2009 version still have the map features that were on the Older versions… I miss that on my 2005 version.

Will there be another webinar if we have to miss this one. I am teaching a class someplace (in something other than Genealogy), myself.
Diane

When I purchased Family Tree 2009 (which I have yet to install) as an update to my Family Tree 16 (I think that was the last version), the contact person said that the book publishing was not yet on the disc. Will this be a free download?

Ancestry Hints…several names have problems opening …get apology message…have tried numerous times over the course of the day..no help

I would like to put my 2 cents in about FTM 2008/2009 versus Version 16. In my opinion FTM 2008/2009 is difficult to use. I have both versions installed but am not adding anything to FTM 2009. Version 16 and previous versions were clean, clear and easy to use. These new versions have just way too much junk in them. I keep hearing various reasons why FTM could not update Version 16 but I think that is just so much nonsense. Same as Coca Cola deciding to deep six Classic Coke in favor of “new Coke” . That did not go over well either. The so-called book feature in the patch for FTM 2009 does not support the many photos I had in my books-none of the photos imported-most of the genealogy files did not import-I was left with a skeleton. If I wanted to keep a book, I would be forced to completely recreate it. I won’t be using FTM 2009.

If not during this webinair, will you in the future conduct one using source files. I’m not sure how to best organize them and maintain a consistent format.

When I do a register report why does only the first and last names appeear oa the parents of the the spouse. It would be much better if the parent had all the names listed. I know all the names appear on the family card. Also if a divorce is recorded ist there aq waythe date and the word divorced could appear.

I have had many versions of FTM but the best one thus far is version 16. The only improvement that one needed was the scrapbook. If the scrapbook was like the legacy 7 the version 16 would be absolutely perfect. One other change is make it compatible with vista.
Please don’t mess with perfection,

I find that wen I do a simple genealogy report and upload as RTF to use with Windows Ultimate Vista, office professional 2007 word that I have BIG problems. Someone has put tables in the background to use for the children – but I can not change the cells. What a MESS. FT 6 was much easier to use, or was it XP?

Where can I find the answers to all these questions? I could learn that way if I could find the answers.

the second webinar I signed up for would not open. It just displayed the speakers pictures.
Question: I work with many names and sources and find it exhausting to click the back button so much. Why can’t this be like a book where you can turn pages and have a place where you can continuously add names being researched, instead of one name at a time?

I would purchase it(Family Tree Maker) if you would make it compatible for Mac!

Thanks!

I am using FTM 2005. I would like for a married female’s maiden name have its own field as well as a seperate field for her married name. Have FTM added this field? If not, how should I enter this info?
Help

How do I handle two maile partners with adopted children?

I have FT2008 and was told FT was rewritten from the ground up and they left out two features that I had used in previous versions. Have they improved FT to include “calendar” and “labels”?
Both of these features are important to me.

When I installed FTM 2009 and impoted my tree from Ancestry.com, references with Ancestry.com URLs showed up in the notes sections for most individuals. I assume the URLs point to the media associated with those individuals on Ancestry.

Is there a way to clean up those URL references without having to do it individual by individual?? I have hundreds of people in my tree with LOTS of media. The biggest problem is that those URLs show up in the reports as notes and cause the reports to be much too large.

2009 frustrates me so much I prefer to use 2006. I should not have to add the facts for each person. they should have transferred over and built from my previous records. I do not like being unable to see the children of a particular family when I have run across one of them i.e. in the census and they now have a family of their own.

P.s. I dont know how to exclude a search result that has nothing to do with my person to keep it from appearing over and over

When will Family Tree Maker be designed for Macintosh users. I don’t need it but when I talk to others about it they are interested.

How do we keep children with mother without changing their names when the mother remarries. I know we can keep them with the different spouses but I want them to be with the present husband. No they are not adopted.

I am interested in printing off reports that show not just straight ancestors – i.e., parents, grandparents, etc…, but also aunts, uncles, cousins, etc…. is there any report that will allow me to view this infomration?

I haven’t been able to work on my Family Tree for a few years due to my husband’s poor health. Now that he is gone, do you have any suggestions as to what I need to do to get started again? I have Family Tree Maker 7.0 for Windows. Any help you can offer would be appreciated.

Bought version FTM 09 last fall and can’t get it installed properly even after I deleted files to make room. Contacted Ancestry. support for help but can;t get response – only he would call back – my cell phone drops the calls and that;’s all I have right now. Am getting really frustrated as Im getting no help. I still hav version 5 which I;m using.

I have a Family Tree Maker file of over 1200 family names. You (Family Tree Maker and Ancestory.com keep asking me to upload my file as a GED. But then, to access that infor plus your main Ancestry file, I have to pay a fee. You get mine for free, and I have to pay for yours. Not Fare!

How do I transmit my data from ancestry.com to family tree 2009?
Thank you very much

I was adopted. I have since found both my birth parents. I want to do a tree with both biological parents. They were not married, but cannot get rid of “spouse” on tree. Is it possible to do a tree with both of them as my parents but with different spouses and children?

Maybe I am dumb but I have a terrible time with linking and not linking sources. For example, I used to put in a choronological time table of where someone was – example 1809, 1810, 1811. etc. I used to do it in facts. Then I tried to do it using sources. So, I put in say Nelson Co., KY, Tax Records but I can’t get the years in order nor unlink some years for other people. After all, the family was there all together up to a point, then split say across a county line. So what am I doing wrong or can’t I do this? Your help/learning center doesn’t answer my question or show me how.

In FTM 2006 there was a report called “all-in-one tree” it could be output to a PDF file. Can you explain in the webinar how to duplicate this function in FTM 2009?

Have you considered a Graft Fuction? I would love to be able to graft a new found tree extension, rather than having to individually update each generation as I find “New Leaves” in my tree. Could you consider showing “New Leaves” on the List of family memebers, rather than having to hunt through the Graphical representation for leaves?

I use FTM 2006 V 13.0.285 which now holds ten years of reseach data. Will the 2009 Update work on this 2006 Version & If so what is the risk of lost data?
This is the first update I have been offered since my original purchase.

I am new to the 2009 version of family tree. I am having problems with uploading my backup disc to the 2009 application. my file name is “rash family.fbc”. any help would be appreciated.

A notice of free upgrades to FTM Version 16 popped up after I attempted to install the new FTM 2009 recently purchased. Are they the same thing? I liked the Version 16. Thanks.

Since October, 2008 I have posed this question far and wide within the herarchy at Ancestry and not one person has addressed it: what is the finctional difference between using FTM versus building a tree online? Why does FTM NOT sync completely w/online trees? (Noticeably absent: images, etc…) Why aren’t the features that are implemented on the one not translated to the other? (Ferreting out and eliminating duplicate entries is nigh impossible online.)
What is the marketing point of having genealogy software AND an online program?
I have both and fail to see any distinct advantage to using FTM other than the ability to produce 6-generation pedigree charts.
Really now, why are there two unequal ways of conducting family research and producing family trees at Ancestry?
Jerry

In order to attach a censu record, or other record that I find on Ancestry.com, do I have to have my family tree on the Ancestry site? Is there any way to attach it into the tree that is in the software?

I have FTM 2009 and did some research for a friend. As a result, she decided to get into research herself and bought FTM 2009. Can I transer the info. I’ve gathered to her FTM?

In FTM16, you could include “objects” (OLE) in the Scrapbook. I would often transcribe information to a Word.doc or a PDF file and I could then “embed” that document in the Scrapbook. Since it was embedded, it became an integral part of the FTW file. Worked fine – also, this method was clearly described in the FTM16 Help file. Also, many sites, like newspapers, etc., provide a “Printer Friendly” option and I often would “print to PDF” an article, obit with photo, etc. and then place this “document” (Word or PDF) onto a Scrapbook page.

Not only was FTM16 smart enough to allow these types of documents, it had the ability to “know” which application to use to view the Scrapbook page.

In FTM2008, first none of these documents showed up in the person’s Media when I imported my files. Then, according to “phone support”, FTM2008 ONLY supports “image” file types (jpeg, TIFF, BMP, etc.) as Media. In other words, they don’t support “OLE” objects anymore. Oh, and this support of only “image” file types is not documented in the Help file or in pre-purchase literature, that I can find.

It was suggested that I open each of my Scrapbook items in FTM16, save the document as a new document (Word, PDF, etc), then convert (if I have appropriate software) the document to a jpeg file and attach it to the correct Person’s Media in FTM2008. You have got to be kidding!

I was also told, “If you deleted the original documents after attaching them to your scrap book, then you will not have a copy is attachable in FTM 2008. Our development team is aware of this issue. We are not able to give any status about whether this feature will be added in the future.”

For this “scrapbook” reason only, I have stayed with FTM16. Any chance this OLE capability will be in 2009 so I can actually import my data and use the new program?

Hello,

I am loving 2009 and the little green leaves that appears with hints so many good ones. The problem I am having it puts say B index when I merge into right facts data of events I click out and the green leaf still appears also the birth index if I click on it again I duplicate the not wanted button is not available?
I wonder what I am doing wrong, could you explain. Thank you Mary

I am in agreement with #67, 125, 128 and others. I have been using FTM for years and love Version 16 the best. I went to 2008 when it came out and never could get it to work right, always had error messages. So now I decided they must have that worked out all the bugs to give us 2009 free. Well, I am trying to keep on open mind but I still find myself going back to Version 16. I tried a few years ago to go to The Master Genealogist and even after a class I was still frustrated. I don’t feel like I am ignorant when it comes to computers or to genealogy but please make 2009 easier. I would purchase the book but I’m not sure that would help. I have always felt that was what was so good about FTM was that you could learn as you go and not get frustrated. How can you help us so genealogy remains to be fun and not such a learning curve? I really want to make 2009 work but for now or when I have more time Version 16 will be my first choice.
Thanks in advance for listening.

On printing/makinag the book, I cannot add more of my data, i.e. tree, text, etc. because it is limited to a certain number of items. Can you solve this?

Use FTM 2009 almost daily. Frequently unable (not all the time) of right clicking on a recorded source anchor it on screen to read it. Left clicking flashes up for quick review but right clicking on in makes in disappear in one second. Unable to bring it up on screen. Why?

FTM2009 I wanted have an Ancestry Tree of my family I have been loading it one by one I am now up passed 700 slow going.
I tried to make a report but it said not acceptable I need it to be a Gedcom. I do not want my notes on Ancestry how can I load my entire tree of 8000 names with out giving my personal notes away. Mary

Is there any way to generate reports on such things as occupations, how many relatives were/are veterans (& their names & which wars), how many & which relatives were from, say, Ireland, etc.? Such reports would be really interesting and help me answer questions about the family from other family members.
And thanks for all the things that do work really well!
Lindy

I don’t understand why FTM is not offered in Mac software.

We are really newbies at using the Family Tree which we had purchased this year.
#1. I can’t seem to figure out how to download my material on to a “Flash Drive”, but did manage to stumble on it once. Can you tell me how to concistently back-up my files and keep them current as I work off my PC?

#2. My husband works on his side of the family on our PC and I work on the Lap top on my side of the family. How do we “MERGE” the families in to one “tree”?

#3. I keep trying to merge material from the names with a Family Tree Maker leaf. It just seems to go no where. What’s the trick?

#4. How does one verify the information/data? I have questioned some of the material found with a family member with the leaf, that I mentioned above. Some other material, I would like to use, but am uncertain of its validity.

I have FTM version 16. I want to upgrade to FTM 2009. Will my files from FTM 16 be automatically copied to FTM 2009.
Also I heard the old version of FTM is not deleted. Can it be deleted manually

I have registered for the March webcast and have this question:

Windows has an “undo” feature so if you make a change/deletion you can undo. Is there anyway of doing that with FTM?

I used to use FTM when I used a computer with Windows XP. I really liked FTM, but when I upgraded to Ubuntu, there wasn’t a version of FTM that was compatible. Are you planning on coming out with a Linux OS version of FTM any time soon? I’ve tried using FTM thru VMware, which is a virtual XP machine in Ubuntu, but waiting for the Windows environment to load and all the resources it uses once it loads are counter to my move to Linux. Thanks.

How can I get info from Jaslo Poland when floods and fires destroyed the records from 1683, 1755 and 1826 ?

#82 Charlene,

I’ve seen the same problem/issue and had to add a name to the “empty” spouse, then delete the newly named person.

Regards,

You guys are so great! I love Ancestry.com!
My question is: Is it best to work on my family tree from my FTM 2009 or from my on Line tree? I used to start with FTM but found that looking at other trees for information seemed easier to see and follow. Now I want to have them in sync with each other and not sure how to get them back! I am fairly new and seem to learn better by visual/doing than by reading. Thanks for whatever help you can give!

In the book section, I’ve gotten two Title pages in a book then could not delete either of them as the program says a book must have a “Title Page.”

Regards,

Is there any thought to adding to v2009 a warning when you make a change in the spelling of a person’s name? This was in all versions prior to 2008 & 9 I believe and it was a great help to keep us from making a change by mistake.

Recently had a hard time with FTM 2009.Got the error msg “Program has encountered aproblem and must clos; etc etc” Deleted it 4 times and reinstaled 4 times. No change in msg Program won’t start. Am attempting the 5th time after I write this.
I suggest that Ancestry write a Cleanup program that can be downloaded to fix the problems on a PC that is causing the error occurring. Other software companies provide a Cleanup utility and since this is evidently happening frequently a cleanup utility should be mandatory.
See you at the webinar

Why can’t we scan directly into Fmily Teee Maker like we could with lower verisons?

I live in penna. & my cousin lives Minn.
How can or can we enter & change info from each ones computeron the family.
HE maintains it.?

Perhaps the most useful document I used to print in my older version was the “Descendants Chart.” How can I do that in FTM 2009.

My records are on Family Tree Maker 4.0. Is there any way I can install them into Tree Maker 2009 other than retyping the entire program?

I started out with 2008 and recently upgraded to 2009 because I could never get the “New and improved viewer” in Ancestry.com to work. I thought that buying 2009 would fix that, but it didn’t.

Also, I agree with #53 about the searches on Ancestry.com. If I put that the person’s birthdate is within a certain range, I’ll get information on people born 100 years later! I don’t want information on people with same/similar names born recently when I’m researching ancestors born in a certain time period. Even place doesn’t seem to filter all that well.

I look forward to the Webinar as I’m pretty much a “newbie” at genealogy and hope to learn something from it.

Thanks!

I’m having lots of problems with the publishing component. I submit the problems through your help facility and was told that I need to call the help desk and they still cant fix the problem

Problem 1 I’m in publishing I have a book of 50 items and can not open the index or contents in Detail if I go out the program and in again the program will unlock, but if I try to open the index or content it will lock up again. with it locked up I push the preview butten then I can see the index and content and all of the book.with help from your help desk we deleted the program( FTM 2009 18.0.0.305)and reloaded it I created a new book and it does the same thing I tryed it on another computer with same results. I loaded another printer that did not help.

problem #2 in media when I try to look at a Item it says file not.If I find it then it’s there but this will happen on another media file the next time I go to media.

Is there a directory of Chicago just before the Chicago Fire in the 1870’s?

In People- persons field, looking at the names above the persons field when you move the mouse pointer over a name a box pops up giving you information about the person. Is there a way to turn that feather off?
It gets in the way!

I have FTM 2008, which I just recently purchased. I never was able to merge individual people from my Ancestry.com tree into it.

In the end, I downloaded a gedcom file of our entire tree. I have a couple of questions about that: the tree is still being updated. Should we do the updates on Ancestry.com and then download another gedcom? Update FTM and upload the revised information?

When I downloaded the gedcom, it brought the urls of the photos in the Ancestry.com tree, but not the images. Do I now have to enter the images all over again for each individual into FTM from my hard drive? If I do that, and then do updates (see above), will those files with photos be overwritten?

Having just purchased FTM2008, am I now required to pay again for 2009, and what will it get me in the way of improvements if I do?

Thank you. Tara.

Is there a way to create custom reports? In previous versions, I was able to create a report and select the facts I wanted (name, spouse, residence, occupation, burial location, etc.). I greatly miss being able to generate a report with custom info in a spreadsheet type format.

I have been using FTM for quite some time. I want to be able to create a modified GEDCOM or file that I can forward to other users. I have recommended FTM to family members but if I export my file I can only send the complete database. My wife’s family doesn’t need or want all of my extended family and vice versa.

How do I reconcile my on-line FTM at ancestry.com with my computer based data on FTM 9 without losing any data on either?

Thanks

I have valued FTM for the ease of utilizing older version files in new versions. I have purchased every upgrade for maybe 20 years or more. The first problem happened when I could no longer convert some friends files from 2004 files to your 2008 without first converting them via 2005 or 2006. I had some suggestions until I read all these comments, and I think you have enough problems without considering any new improvements. I am using 2006 on one computer and 2008 on another. I own version 16 but have been afraid to use it or 2009. After 20 years, I am frustrated at what I see here.

Version 2008 just did not work for me so I went back to using version 16 which was much more user friendly. Version 2008 was all about getting you to pay a monthly fee. I am happy that you have put the calendar back in version 2009. I will have to be convinced that it is really better before I will update to 2009 version.

I too frequently(everytime I use program) get a message that FTM has encountered a problem and has to close. It is version 2008 and I’m very disappointed. I don’t like the whole format. Why has it had to change so dramatically from older versions!?

Also when printing poster, misses print in horizontal seams. I can’t seem to remedy this.

I love the feature on FTM 2009 that allows me to copy a source citation. However, I need to know how to make a small change to an existing citation that is linked to other files without changing the other files. Must I create a new citation with the small change (such as page number) each time?

Sometimes when I attach a new tree, I end up duplicating all the children under a different spouse. I’ve tried to delete a child by going to edit info but end up deleting them from both spouses. What is the correct way to fix my problem?

What happened to accessing my FTM web site. mone is http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/v/i/c/Dawna-J-Vicars-CA/
But I can’t get to it from FTM 2009

How do I publish gen reports on the site, if I can’t get to it?

How do I publish to the site from FTM 2009

Under the index of names, how do I show who they are married to, like it did in the older programs? All it show sis birth death and marriage date but not WHO they were married to?

In printing out ancestry charts, I wanted to NOT include the divorced spouses or at least show that they WERE divorced. The only thing I could do was delete their names which then came up as “unknown spouse” which wasn’t true, the divorced spouse was indeed known, and list them in “notes”, however that didn’t work w/those who had children. How can I show on the charts that a child is adopted? I’ve filled out all of the info notes, they just never appear on the charts even when I check the box to allow private notes. Also, in downloading the new updated software, I encountered a problem (a necessary file was unable to be downloaded) which has been resolved, but the error window continues to appear every time I turn on my computer. How can I delete that once and for all. Finally, in exporting one particular line to other family members, how can I be sure they’re only getting their line and not extraneous lineage from elsewhere on the tree? Thank you so much. Laura

I have just upgraded to 2009 version from 2005, admitedly a bit nervous as I have over 3500 people and 700 sources but everything SEEMS to have come through except my research to do list. I had trouble even finding where to start another one but nowhere can I find that the present one made the merge. ??

You listed the time as Eastern Standard Time, but Daylight Savings Time begins before March 12.

So what time?

Jerry

I have my entire family tree in one file of FTM. Is it possible for me to split it into two or more smaller files at an appropriate branch (e.g., my family and my wife’s family), then link them together for the purpose of such things as printing a comprehensive report or searching across all names or places?

I just purchased Family Tree Maker 2009, installed it used it once and now it will not work.

Question: In my facts I have two draft registrations for my Grandfather, one for WWI and one for WWII. I have to choose which one I want to be preferred, and that is the only one that will print when I do a geneology report, how can I get both of them to print?

Same goes for Residences, my relatives moved alot, I would like each of their residences to show.

thanks

Will the new features be automactically downloaded from your site to my program? If not, what is the proper procedure?

First, notice that my email address has changed from agnesbuzz@usfamily.net to agnesbuzz@q.com.
Second, are we now able to include all facts [i.e., obituaries, information, etc.] to our reports when printing out a descendant or ancestor report??? I know I sound like a broken record, but many of my friends thought all the information in a printout of information was terrific when sharing information about ancestors/descendants.

How does FTM handle name changes? A lot of our Ancestors Americanized their names. Where does this change link show in FTM?

Time-line in the up-dated 2009 version is not consistent. My mother’s death in 2008 appears on my sister’s time-line but not on mine or my brother’s. Birth of spouse is only on my sister’s as well. Death of father shows up on all. The time-line is not consistent and there does not appear to be any way to change it so that it works automatically the way it should.

I would like to query my database for certain people by date of birth. Can this query be done and if so can it be done by date range with family treemaker 2009?

I haven’t purchase my membership on ancestry.com yet but would like to know before I purchase… Will I be able to transfer my info into a GEDCOM file to my computer. I’ve done alot of work here and don’t want it all to be in vain. I see where you can import a GEDCOM but can you export? Thanks!

I did a great deal of work in the online Ancestry.com family tree, then I purchased Family Tree Maker 2009. I imported my online ancestry.com tree into it. None of my photos(media) came over. Do I have to start all over on adding all those photos into Family Tree Maker 2009?

I have FTM 2009, in earlier version we could scan documents directly into our sources. Why can’t we do that in FTM 2009. I now have to scan items into a seperate file and then copy into FTM, this makes it cumbersom when doing many documents.

I know generally what a plugin is but how do I find plugins that are available for FTM2009?

How do I create a printable timeline for several generations on a line?

How can I reference a specific source but include different details like page numbers for diferent person-facts?

I would like to know how I can erase duplicate spouses with out eraseing the children

In Family Tree Maker 2009 in creating books, how can you add text document files that you already have created to your Title Pages. When you open FTM2009, you first click on “Publish”. Click on “Saved Books”. You click on “Title Page” and at the top is “Insert”. Under insert is “Image From Media Collection”, “Image from File”, and “Symbol”. Could there be another item be added, “Text Document from File”. This would allow us to input text documents that we already have created into our Saved Book as Part of the “Title Page”. Also I wish we could add “Text Documents” that we have created anywhere into the Saved Book and not just the “Title Page”. Thanks

I would like to how the new version of FTM ( 2009) will work for LDS members doing research online with their new updated genealogy research program. Will I just have to cut and paste research results or is there a way to download results to the FTM program. Particularly, of interest is the names, dates, places and dates, etc of Temple ordinance work done.
Thanks so much for FTM I have been a user of FTM from the time it was 1.5 (many years ago) and have helped many folks too get hooked on FTM.
Mary S

I purchased and installed FTM 09. When I installed, the program did not override current program file, rather created a new file.I will need to export my family file to new version. The problem is that I do not feel particularly movitated to load my family file into 09 version. There seems to be nothing particularly new.
I posted my concern on one of the genealogy maillist and those who respond have confirmed that there is nothing particularly new.
Convince me that I should retain 09 program on computer!!!

Thanks

not able log on

family tree maker is telling me i can’t add any more name because i have need and upgrade version will this cost money.I had an old version pre 1995 and never had a problem seem to all ways have room I only tried to add 1 name in since the new version

I was told before I down loaded the 08 version that my old version pre 1995 would still work well it don’t and has cause me big problems

Similar to question #41, I used to be able to print a list of all people in my database who were b, m, or d in a specific location by generating a custom report and choosing individuals to include. Entering the name of the location would bring up ALL the people in the database that fit the specific criteria I requested. NOW I only get the relatives of the person highlighted in the People view. I’ve had various versions of FTM since you first came out, and this version is BY FAR the most frustrating I have ever used. It seems like the common sense needs of the genealogist have been supplanted by whistles and bells. HOW do I generate the report mentioned above!!

I have Family Tree Makers2002 edition how do i go about getting free upgrade 2009 edition.
thank you

Preparation of Books. When preparing the title page of a book I am inserting more than one “image from file” into different pages of the “Title Page”. So far I have over 6 different files and I have them located on different pages as part of the “Title Page”. I save the file, but when I preview the book it takes information that I typed and part of the file that I transferred and places it onto the page above it. I looked at the Page Setup and Paragraph Setup, etc. and can’t find anything that will help me in keeping the data I put on one page from puting it on the page above when I view the book. Is there anyway that I can create more than one page as my “Title Page” or can I create more pages in the document by “Image From File” and put them in the book where I want them.

#215 Walter:

Here are two items that I’ve found “better” in 2009 versus older versions.

(1) In the old version you had to add duplicate references/sources for each person. Same is true for shared photos. In the new version a single source or photo can be linked 1 time to many persons or facts.

(2) File size. By having images separate from the database file, the amount of text information that can be linked/saved is much greater. For example, my single family file grew too large for version 16 (maxing at 2GB). This was due to all of the images (photos, census records, etc..) I had to split up my file into two sections (my family and my spouses’ family) to keep working in v16. Soon, both files were pegging at 2GB because of all of the census images added.) In versions 2008 and 2009 the images are separated into their own folder and only the text information is kept in the database file. My two 2GB files became 85MB and 77MB for the data portion.

Regards,

When will the capability to edit media be implemented? In Version 16 and earlier, you could select a photo from a file, crop out an image from that photo and save the image. This is great when you have a group photo and you want to save an image of each individual under the entry for that individual. It also helps when you scanned in a slide upside down and want to correct it. Not everyone has Photoshop and, more importantly, has the capability to use its capabilities to edit pictures. The previous FTM capability received a lot of use from me and my students. We miss it in 2009

Yeh! Help is good. Ancestry gave me help getting my 124 people files from 2005 FTM back into the old 2005 version because I liked it better than my 2009 where I would have to retype 124 sets of information again.
But now it is gone again from FTM 2005 into the mysterious world
of WHERE since I have a new Ancestry family site name with my new subscription.
If you can address the old style files being available to 2009 as a storage drawer where those 124 can be found again as the available personals like Gen Smarts does with what you put on their site (which is the 124 they pulled backed in for me) I’d be grateful since I like the FTM 16 or FTM 2005 format.
I might feel like I have a chance of getting
this everlasting project done since I have promised my family for 7
years they would get it for their Christmas present good Lord willing I still have my wits about me. Any help will be appreciated if you can keep it simple.

how can i download my ancestry merge into my family tree disk?

1.how can i translate other languages to english?
2.were can i find names of family that was marriage to indians.

I’ve used the PAF family history program for years but I was curious about FTM and went to your web site today. I read about the FTM program and got quite excited about it. In fact, I told my husband that I was going to purchase it.
However, I like to know what I’m getting into before I actually make big changes. I watched the last webinar about the new 2009 program and the pending updates. I liked what I saw.
Then I spent several hours reading all of the comments on this page. I’m not excited any more!
It sounds like people are unhappy with some of the changes that have been made and have experienced numerous problems with FTM 2008 and 2009.
I really wish that I had read more positive reports. There were a few, but not nearly enough to balance out the negative reports.
I do not feel comfortable purchasing it now. However, I’ll look again after you’ve had time to work out more of the bugs.
Sorry, Lorraine

1. I would like to be able to see my entire tree periodically. How can I do this?

2. How can I move media from my Tree at Ancestry.com directly to my Tree at FTM?

When generating a register report there is a Reference ID # included in the report. In order to remove this Reference ID I have to check the box which says “use short biographies B. M. D. only” When I do that than all other facts are removed. There should be away to exclude the Reference ID only and keep all other facts. All facts are entered by me but the Reference ID is added by FTM. I would suggest putting the Reference ID as a separate item under the icon Items to include.
Thanks
Bob Klein

Is there some way that the direct line of people in the people list can be highlighted?

can you create a template to mail or e-mail to fill out about their family so i can enter in the family tree

I like the visual presentation of the timeline but am frustrated that there is no way to export it – are there any plans for this? It would be been more useful if I could do a side-by-side comparison of two (or more!) individuals’ timelines, but that might be addressable by an export function.I’d also like to be able to select and/or edit which “Historical events” are dispalyed.

James # 222

The issues you mentioned are certainly important for maintenance of a family file.
I was hoping to find new tools for facilitating research.
Walter

I am new to using Family Tree Maker 2009. All the information on my Ancestry.com uploaded into the Family Tree Maker 2009 the first time I used it. Now, if I have new info on my Ancestry.com site, I do not know how to upload it into Family Tree Maker. I need help. Thanks.

When viewing an actual tree of my family the order of siblings is not chronological. All birthdates are correct. I’m the youngest and I am first listed then my brother who is oldest then other sibs follow in correct order. How do I put me at the end?

I have full membership in Ancestry.com and also Familt Tree Maker 2009. I just ordered Family tree Maker Basic Bundle.
I have a lot of work done on Ancestry.com and some in Family Tree Maker. How can I transfer/download all that info from Ancestry.com to Family Tree Maker 2009 witjout having to input manually over 3000+ names and entries?
I need you help.
Thanks.

I have FTM 2009 and would like to alter the information on a death source for a particular individual. However, when I make changes to it, it alters that source for everyone connected with that generic source (”newspaper obituary”). How can I change the information for just that one individual?

Hi Michelle,

I have put a lot of time and effort into my ancestry.com tree and have many photos and stories attached to people. I heard about how wonderfully FTM integrates with ancestry.com so I bought it. Now I learn that none of the photos or stories can be easily merged into FTM so if I want to use FTM as my primary genealogy platform I have a large job of manual integration to do which is very disappointing and frustrating. I would much rather spend my time adding to my tree rather than recreating it. I am currently trying to decide if I should try to return FTM for a refund. What are your plans and timetable to get FTM integrated with ancestry.com?

Thanks,

Why are there links in my Family Tree Maker software to ads for purchasing more services from you? That’s a first for me. Once I purchase the software, it seems I ought to be ad free.

i HAVE ALL MY FAMILY TREE ON OLD COMPUTER WINDOWS ME. I NOW HAVE VISTA AND CAN’T TRANSFER IT.???????ON A NEW LAPTOP

I would like to copy info from ancestry.com into family tree maker. Is this possible?

# 15 Dale

FTM 2009 will read make a copy of and convert the copy to the FTM 2009 format leaving your FTM 9 data unaltered.

In the plan view from FTM 2009 go to new tree and follow the prompts

A number of people using Macs with Windows emulators programs have reported success in running FTM 2009 on a MAC

There is no native MAC version of FTM

The custom report in any version of FTM can do that now

The key is individuals to include

Depending on your version, you can include individuals born in a location etc

Exactly the same way as you did it in FTM 2006

Use the Custom Report

And use the Items to Include to set it up as you want it

No essential difference to FTM 2006 and you can save the report as well exactly as you can in FTM 2006

FTM 2009 will read any FTM file created from any version of FTM from version 5 on

What it does is makes a copy of the earlier file, then converts it to the new FTM 2009 format and leaves the original untouched.

Purchased Family Tree Maker in future shop good program, but I cannot access internet to register.
Tried all the recommendations i.e disconnect firewall; inactivate all start programs etc but no luck.
Tried this on my Laptop as well again nothing.

The in program book was included in the SP1 patch for FTM 2009

Check your Help>About. It should say 18.00.305

If it does not go to Help>Check for Updates and download and install the SP1 patch that includes the books and other goodies

John D

The program FTM 2009 is identical

The differences in the retail packs (and these also differ in various countries) refer to added bonus items such as membership to Ancestry.com. and data CDs

John D

#113 John

I assume that you have made typo and are referring to FTM 2009?

The current version is FTM 2009 and it is not an upgrade of version 16 but a totally new program, that some love and some do not.

FTM 9 is in fact 6 versions older (earlier) than version 16

John D

#116 Bill

Version 16 is the end of the line stretching back to FTM 2 for Windows in about 1989.

It is still supported on its knowledge base http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php but there will not be any further developments of the program

You can graft (merge in FTM speak now)

In terms of a list of people with leaves an often requested enhancement.

But send it in to

John D

#150 Brian

If you decide to install FTM 2009 it will not overwrite your FTM 2006 program or data.

They are totally separate programs

If you choose you can import your FTM 2006 data along with images in to FTM 2009

It will make a copy of your FTM 2006 file and then convert it and leave your FTM 2006 file in place

You can in fact leave FTM 2006 on your computer along with FTM 2009 and in fact have both open together

Then in your own time you can decide which one you prefer

I currently have FTM 16, FTM 2008 and FTM 2009 on my computer and they all happily coexist

The reason I have kept FTM 2008 is to answer questions

John D

#155 Kris

yes

You can send all or part of your file in either .FTM or GEDCOM format through the File>Export Function

John D

#156 Tom

FTM 2009 will support OLE objects like it did in FTM 2006, but due to the limitations of the links in FTM 2008, the links did not come across in the conversion.

I understand that it has been improved in FTM 2009 but I have not personally tested this.

So the short, safe answer is that you will have to relink the OLE objects in FTM 2009

It is not difficult to construct a custom report in FTM 2006 to list all the ole objects linked but I think you will have some linking to do

John D

#162 Lindy

Yes use the custom report and the individuals to Include feature to filter in or out what you want

These reports can be saved and are dynamic. Applies to all versions although the CR varies a bit in FTM 2008/09

John D

#163 Mary

Commercial decision as to its possible market, and the amount of resources that the company has to develop it.

John D

#164 Florence

1 Outside FTM use Windows Explorer or My Computer and simply copy and paste your file.

2 You don’t say which version of FTM that you are using but all have File>Merge facility

3 Depends on what you tell the merge wizard when you are comparing data. Sure you are not checking the ignore radio button? Look at the web merge tutorial on this link
http://www.familytreemaker.com/Support/Tutorial2009/Tutorial2009.aspx

4. Read “Evidence, Sources and Citations for the family Historian”. by Elizabeth Shown Mills. Complex subject and ESM is the guru

John D

#165 Rose

No it won’t be automatically copies

You must use the new tree option in the Plan View and import and convert a copy. Your data in an older version will be untouched

Yes you can remove any previous version of FTM via the Windows Control Panel Add/delete programs (which has an obscure different name in Vista that I cannot remember ;-(

John D

#166 Eugene

FTM is a database and makes a save every time you exist a field. That is why there is no Save command in FTM (or most other databases for that matter)

You do have limited undo generally limited to the last entry.

If you are expecting to have to make multiple undoes maybe make a copy of your datafile before an editing session?

John D

#173 Tom

And it still is

In FTM 2009 Tools>Options>Warnings tab

Tick the show informational check box

John D

#174 Frank

That is what Tools>Compact File is for

John D

#175 Charles

Currently not supported why don’t you put in an enhancement request?

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/ask_feedback.php

Remember that in FTM 2009 images are not put into the database, but are linked from the hard drive so what you are suggesting in one way doesn’t make any sense

Personally I would never do it as I like to get my photos/scans in the very best condition by scanning into a phot editor like Photoshop/ Paint Shop Pro Photo etc

John D

#177 Oscar

It is in the Publish Workspace

John D

Yes but as FTM 2009 cannot read version 4 files nor can it read the version 4.0 GEDCOM that version 4 creates, you will have to download the free FTM 2005 starter edition and convert your file to a format that FTM 2009 can read.

Go to http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=HDkJsgKi and search for article 3673

John D

#184 Deanne

The Custom Report is in the Publish Workspace under person Reports

John D

#185 Rod

You can choose to select what you want in a GEDCOM report through the File>Export and use the filter

You have the choice of the entire file or selected individuals.

If you choose selected individuals then you have a custom report type filter so you can easily select a group or line to export

John D

#189 Jill

Use the Controls/facilities (attach/detach/delete etc) in the person menu

Also try and work out why you are duplicating people

John D

#193 Dawna

Use the FTM version that you used to create your Genealogy.com web site

I keep FTM 16 on my computer to do this

FTM 2009 will not support web pages created by Genealogy.com

In terms of FTM 2009, use the Upload to Ancestry in the Share option

I think being realistic it is unlikely that Genealogy .com will be directly supported as TGN own Ancestry.com and will tend to route trees there.

John D

#194 Dawna

I have only used Family Tree Maker 2009. I have tried others and enjoy it very much. I have – however had to delete my .ftm files several times because I am learning it. For this being the only software I have used – it is not the easiest one to use.

The problem I have found with this software is when printing the family tree. It overlaps on the right side. I print it in landscape and it overlaps the last relative over the previous relative. I think we should be able to change the fonts and maybe be able to print more than 5 generations to show up on the tree.

Because FTM 2009 links photos it provides you with the ability to edit them in the photo editing program of your choice, all of which are far more capable that the simple editor in FTM 16 and earlier (with no undo on red eye removal)

True not everyone has Photoshop, but everyone can download the free Irfanview which has an excellent suite of editing options

FTM 2009 lets you nominate your preferred photo editor

Have you planned an spanish version?

There Is a very large community all around the world using FTM

Thks from Canary Islands (Spain)

I would like to view the New Webinvar on the 12 March but it is in EST time so behind us. What time can we view it in England? Also I would like to update my 2008 Family Tree Maker how can I do this please. Many thanks.

1. As James mentioned in email #20, When will FTM be merged with Ancestry.com, so we can enter info just once?

2. I have had FTM 2009, and recently bought a new HP desktop. I u[loaded a f;ash drive of data from my old Dell to the HP, and installed FTM 2009 on my new computer. How do I get my previously entered FTM data into FTM 2009?

1. Are you going to discount the price?

2. If we buy FTM 2009, will we have to then have to download SP1, and then download these upgrades, or will there be a new version that incorporates all the improvements?

3. Why should we by now, why not wait until FTM 2010 comes out? Maybe it will have a fix to the “known issues”.

I have two separate files for our family. I have a branch for the current family tree and a separate file for the old branches of the family. Now I have the person link that connects these two branches. How can I merge one file with another?

I am a new user and started with FTM 2009 – love it! Some questions I’d love to see in the Webinar are: (1) tips for using FTM and ancesty.com effectivly (in synch?)
(2) why do I get more spinning leaves with my online tree than the FTM version? (3) how do I handle repeating facts? ex I have people with the birthdate displayed multiple times. Am I merging correctly?

Thanks, I am looking forward to the class.

I like the “leaves” or hints. But sometimes I’m unable to remove a leaf, as the hint won’d allow you to select “ignore”. Why is this and how can I fix it? I like to search and keep the leaves off of my tree

Sometimes the connection between my family tree and the internet don’t seem to be there so when i work on a “leaf” there is no option to merge or ignore. I know the connection to the interest is still valid though as I can connect directly – its just that i can’t work on the “leaves” and merge, ignore, etc so the leaf is removed. What can I do to fix this?

Michelle,
I updated my file only to have uninstall the update in order for merge to work correctly. Christopher responded that there was a “bug”. Do you know if that bug is still alive and well or has it been killed?
Thanks

I will not be able to watch this on 12 Mar and am wondering if there is some way that I can get a printout of the whole thing. Or can I tape this some how?

PLEASE!!!!!Can someone tell me who to contact or what to do to get someone to get FTM to colaborate with Apple so I can continue to do my Genealogy on my Mac. I have been doing genealogy on FTM since virson 2 and now with my Mac I have to use Reunion and it is so disappointing, I have sent letters and e-mails to different places but have never had any feedback.

I have built up my paper copies filing system around reference numbers that were assigned when I entered a new name in FTM. FTM 2008 and 2009 do not offer that feature, so I am at a loss. Please help.

After every webinar, it is archived and you can watch it anytime,

the details are usually posted on this blog or at http://www.familytreemaker.com/Support/

Wish you would tell us what version you are using, but it is simply done via the File>Merge

Go to http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=HDkJsgKi

and look at article 3077 for FTM 2008 or article 4317 FTM 2009

I always suggest to people to make a couple of small test files with a common person and do a bit of practice

Will family tree maker 2009 run on windows vista 64-bit version? Can I import data from an older version of family tree maker (version 6)?

#325 Paul

Yes, so long as you have the MS file WSE 3.0. It is a free download if it is not already on your computer.

http://www.microsoft.com/Downloads/details.aspx?familyid=018A09FD-3A74-43C5-8EC1-8D789091255D&displaylang=en

FTM 2009 will read copy and convert date from FTM 6

John D

my FTM 2009 wont update

In relation to people with no surnames. FTM suggests you use ‘\\’ – that’s OK but when you do a book, in the Index they are filed under their Christian name, and if you have someone that has a surname the same as their Christian name, they also get filed under ‘-’, not their surname. It would be best if all people with no surnames could be batched together. I’m looking forward to be part of yr webinar all the way from Brisbane, Australia.

I too am a FTM version 16 user. I tried 2008 and had such difficulty with it that I uninstalled it. I was excited to see a new version but am disturbed after reading of some of the very same concerns I had with 2008. My dad and I both use family tree maker. I want to be able to give him a copy of what I have one mine so he can download it. What is the easiest way to share your files with other users. I like a simpler faimly view and then if I need any more of the bells and whistles I can use a drop down rather than having so much stuff on one page. It is overwhelming. I have been a looooong time user of FTM but am not convinced 2009 is an improvement.

In FTM 2009, why are images uploaded under the Web Search area (ie census records) not shown under the media tab in the People area? They are visible under the Media Tab in the Web Search area but not under the Media Tab in the People area.

If we construct a custom print image from a document found on Ancestry.com under the Web Search area of FTM 2009, why cann’t we save that custom print image to a particular person in our FTM 2009?

When making reports, it would be useful if you could select just preferred fact for some fact groups, such as birth, but allow all facts for other fact groups, such as residence. Currently, when I go into options for a particular fact and select show only preferred, it applies to all facts and shows only preferred for all facts. This function should be fact specific, not general.

Is it possible, (and if not, can it be done), to have a report in Family Tree Maker 2009 that will list all of the people in the tree that have hints available from Ancestry?

#327 Martha

This can be caused by a couple of reasons

Probably the quickest to try first is to uninstall then reinstall FTM 2009 and it should detect the patch when it loads

Also go to http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=HDkJsgKi and look at article 4573

How do I intergrate my on-line ancestry tree with my 2009 Family Tree Maker? My on-line tree is set to private and when I tree to import it, I get a message that I can’t access my own tree.

I have family tree maker 2009. Can I split a family tree and make two trees out of it? If so how?

Thanks?

Why can’t you make an additional Family Tree Maker program that is compatible with MACs? Your program favors PCs, and as I am a MAC user, I have encountered many difficulties in using Family Tree Maker.

I want to seperate whole family’s into their own database, split them off leaving the person that would connect the two in each family file. I have FTM 2005 and can not find my book that tells me how to do this.

Thank you

I agree with Cindy’s post about FTM 2009 versus Version 16. I have both installed now. As far as I am concerned, FTM 2009 is so full of fancy bells and whistles that it is extremely difficult to use. Not only that, but when I imported my books from Version 16 most of the content was lost, leaving me a skeleton of the book. None of the photos imported and most of the genealogy files were gone. This book import is a joke. I am sure FTM 2009 is a programmers or a computer junkies dream but for long time users such as myself it is full of junk. Give us a program that can be useful and leave out the fancy bells and whistles.

I have gotten some family crests off your site . Is there a certain place I can go for more that don’t cost anything to put on my page

An option to put a person’s title on the main screen for each individual would be a great add on. At the moment I put the title as part of the name (which is messy) or I put it in the description area.

Family Tree Maker 2008 seems to have compatibility issues with Windows Vista. The program crashes and I get a message that a solution is in the works? Any information on this problem would be appreciated. I have no problems with the website, it is great.

I like to use favorite fonts when printing charts and reports. The older FTM I was able to do this and make it my default. With 2009 when I shut down the computer I have to change the fonts again when I go back to FTM. Hope any updates in the future will give us the option for our own default settings. Thanks

How about Family Tree Maker for Mac? Are there any plans in the future?

I can’t figure out if it is possible to merge facts WITHIN a person. For example, if there are 4 birth facts and I just want one, can I merge them or is the only option to delete the ones I don’t want.

I still have Family Maker 16. Can this new version do relational charts? If not, when can we expect it on a patch or new version?

Thanks,

Where does information saved in “shoebox” on Ancestry go? Sometimes it is the only option I have when I find something, but then I don’t know how to get it from Ancestry to Family Treemaker 2009

How can I add recent parties to different family trees? Ie My children to both family sides without reentering all the same information/duplication?

I wonder if the Webinar will be recorded? I believe the questions might benefit everyone. I will be in an airplane during the webinar and would like to listen to it later.

I have helped with the beta testing for two versions/updates of 2009 and after much work, I still cannot get it to work with my Ancestral Quest GedCom. It seems to die because I have 309,000 names in my database and it cannot handle it. I have been promised that Ancestry is working on the problem, but have heard nothing to date as to if this issue has been resolved. Those of us with large data bases would like to know if the problem has been resolved yet? Bought and paid for…. but does not work with my data!!

Can I use it on my I Mac computer?

I have FTM 2006, and like everything about it except that I cannot copy and paste, either to or from, the notes section. It would be most helpful to be able to copy to this section, and there are many times that i would like to print out just these notes.

I don’t know if this is the right place for this question. it’s my first time here.
Anyway, my version of Family Tree Maker will let me make a 2006 calendar. Is there a way to make a caklander for this year?
Thanks

In these times where someone could have been married multiple times and had kids in multiple marriages, is there a tree style (for printing out) that easily facilitates this? Also, what is the proper etiquette for printing out a family tree for people with former spouses (i.e. do you show them all or only the current one)?

Can I combine/merge two family trees without having duplicate of some names by merging them? How.

I have an extremely large file that is in excess of 2.2 gigabytes. As I continue to add more and more dataa & pictures into the file it is getting more and more unstable. Is any thing in the works to improve the software to correct this problem

I also have a problem that occured when I imported my file between FTM2006 to the new software design where it translated about 30000 description codes I had entered for people and converted them into places which were no longer attached to any people. Is anything in the works to correct this problem and also allow for an easy fix versus deletion one line item at a time

Thanks

I miss the Marriage Notes section. It was a great place to put witnesses, priest’s name and anniversary follow-ups. Any chance FTM will put that back into the program?

With the addition of producing a calendar in the new version of Family Tree, I was excited about generating a monthly birthday calendar for our family newsletter. But the new version does not allow you to create a calendar with all the individuals in my data base. It does allow a calendar for single individuals. When can this be corrected?

Can I upgrade from Family Tree Maker 2005 to 2009 without losing material in 2005?

I have Family Tree Maker Version 16 (since around 2006). I’ve had the same email address for many, many years. I never received notification of Family Tree Maker updates, etc. I currently have 1805 names in my Family Tree Maker database. Will I be able to convert my db file easily to your new 2009 version? Thank you.

I have Tree Maker 2005 . Will all my data update to 2009 without any problem? I heard some data does not make the update. That would be a nightmare to go back and troubleshoot.
Does Essential have all of the same software features as Deluxe and Platinum?

Why can’t I download my FTM files to a thumb drive?

Questions for webinar:
1. Will I be able to import and export from the notes section and the new family history book section?

2. Will I be able to switch to italic or bold print (where I want to add my comments to the family history book)?

3. Will I be able to print the Notes separately or the family history book section separately?

4. Is this an upgrade with upgrade pricing (from the last version)? or is it a new version price?

I have Family Tree Maker for the year 2006. What new things have been added since then and can I download them? I do however have a new computer and of course Vista, is this a problem?
Thank you,
Alice

In the past, some versions will not recognize a file after a new version has come out, and the file is brought into the new version. This makes it tough on those who are corrisponding with others in the family, who may not have the latest version. Why not make them compatable, or have a short conversion program to read the new version?

I would like to see a feature on the new software for adoptive children or people that have changed their names. Right now, I have one set of children under their biological parents and them again under the adopted parents. I think they should be intertwined.

How should a change in surname be handled? Some of the KOCH family decided to go with the easier COOK spelling. There are at least 2 branches who did this in the 1920’s.

I wish to compile a book of my ancestors from my data without sharing it with everybody on Ancestry. How can I do that? Does uploading my info mean that I lose copyright details. I see that this is a concern for others, also.
Sandra Thomas

In future programs I would like to see a 3 dating alternative. To me, what makes most sense is to have the year first, then month, then date. i.e.

2001 Sep 11 – the other 2 ways makes no
sense to me. A tombstone
may say 1901 – 1981 but
it won’t say Oct 1st –
Mar 3rd.

1. Having access to large format plotter, I cannot seem to publish a tree to utilize 36″ wide rool paper or larger trees. (even standard sizes; 30×42, 24×36, etc..) Also using both FTM and Ancestry.com Family Tree the publish option on line generates a better looking tree chart.

2. Can FTM and Ancestry.com Family Trees be sync, easily without loss of info (including photos)??

[I also echo another readers comment, why offer both FTM & Ancestry.com Family Tree??

Whut’s this about Real Player?

I DO NOT WANT to load Real Player on my computer.

Let me know if I can do without Real Player.

After trying Ver 2008, I, too, went back to Ver 16. For a minute I was excited about your putting the calendar back. Then I read on to see it only shows immediate family members. How disappointing if that is true. I won’t update to the 2009 until this is clarified. I always used the ancestors’ birthdays, etc., as an excuse to remember them to others.

Has the limitation on the maximum number of records been removed. I had to stop using FTM about 4 years ago when I hit the limit and each of the subsequent editions of FTM has not changed the limit.

Also, since Daylight Savings Time started yesterday, is it really at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time or is it 8:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time?

I have recently gone from FTM2005 to FTM 2009 and from XP to Vista. There are some features that I like about 2009 but many others that I preferred with 2005. One of my questions is that when I am working in 2009 the feature to go on the web keeps shutting down and says that the internet is not available but If I go immediately to the internet it is up and working fine. I then return to the web on FTM and still cannot get on the web. What is the problem?

I do wish that the family group sheets looked like the ones from FTM 16. When you are adding group sheets to a binder on the same family they do not look the same.

I have not figured out a correct way to show family members that are not married or married and have children and the mother or father is different to the person whey are living with (step children).

The other question is how to show someone has remarried with kids and no kids.

I have FTM 2009 (version 18.0.0.95)installed since October 2008. For several months now, the Index section (seen on the left hand side of FTM family section)will not display any names. There is a circle, as if waiting for something to load, that continually spins, spins, spins…If I click onto the “Index of Individuals” from the drop down section of the people section (in the gray strip at the top) the whole FTM program dissappears. How do I stop this? I have over 4600 names on FTM. I have tried to “compress the file” as it was once suggested, but still have the same problem. Please help me.

I am trying to add more sources. Could the whole Source Citation box be made bigger and the space for Citation detail be enlarged? Also, the little pop-up boxes can be in the way, both there and when adding new information about a person on the main page. Sometimes the pop-ups keep me from adding the place after I’ve added the date, etc.
Can more templates be added for sources? For example, a template for the Census, for information obtained from ancestry.com’s various sites like Ancestry World Tree Project, etc.

The Webinar March 8 coming up is not on the pages when I open FTM in Windows Explorer where I can use Windows Media Player.

Aren’t you guy co-ordinated? You got all these experts, yet can’t see the forest for the trees.

This is to all who have asked questions!! Most of them could be answered without using this blog. Just got to HELP. One lady wondered why they don’t have marriage notes, notes are still available for marriages, go to HELP to find out where!!

I use FTM 2005. I would like to attach files that I prepare outside FTM, e.g. Excel and Word. Can this be done in the new version?

It would be nice to earmark certain pages to quickly return to them after going to distant pages.

Backups are not straightforward. I need to be able to backup to an external drive, or a thumb drive but I have to “fool” the program to do this.

I would like to be able to store my FTM file at Ancestry.com (for free of course) so I can easily access from any library, or any computer.

Why can’t we open up FBC files of back ups? I have one with all of my original Family Tree on it from Family Tree Maker and I am not able to open it now. When I doenload from online I lose all of the first names of living individuals in my tree. I lost everything one day and only had the old FBC Back-up. Please help with this. Thanks

My tree has over 78,000 names and I have tried to transfer it over to the new edition of Family Tree and it fails every time. What should I do.
Also I can no longer put pictures up on the scrapbook in my version 2005 as it comes up as Fatal Error.

I have been a FTM user from V.3 and have upgraded every release thru V.16. I have repeatedly asked that you let comments be included in OUTLINE DESCENDANT Reports. You show an item “Individual Note” as pssible to be included but when I do, NOTHING shows on the Report. Are you ever going to allow this or is the list of items to include just for appearance, but no actual info is ever output on the Report. I am going to stop asking and may NEVER upgrade again. When I talk to your support people sometimes they tell just to add that item to the right side and it will appear. Other times they tell it is not there to be selected. Does anyone actually listen !!!

When will a version of FTM include ALL the features that were available in FTM-16?

Thanks for putting the calendar back on. My question relates to annivesaries put on the calendar when one of the parties is deceased. Could this and the divorced members be changed so they do not appear on our calendars? Thanking you in advance.

I believe you time is in error.
You wrote 8:00 PM EST, March 12th.
We are now on DST, in most states. Arizona and Hawaii may still be on standard times.

I’m on my 3rd or 4th version of Family Tree Maker, and I’ve found 2009 version to be, by far, the hardest to use. My 2006 version was so easy to see and understand just where I was working. When I got my 2009 version, I was sick. Now I always have both open at the same time so I can use 2009 to search with and 2006 to save my information to. I almost threw my 2009 version away, but I decided to keep it because I was told that “It’s far more powerful than 2006″. That may be true, but I find it confusing and hard to use and don’t really like it at all.
Please tell me the next version will mnore resemble the 06 version. Maybe I’ll go there….but o9….I just hate it!

It there a way to auto log in to the other linked sites in the “Web Search” mode like the ancestry.com link does? On the dashboard you have rootsweb.com, genealogy.com, etc, but they do not transfer data the same way.
Thanks
Keith

I can not down the update for family tree maker 2009. The error message says the RTP patch has encountered a program and needs to close, your tech helped me try and they could not get it to work either.
Whats up with this problem? I bought 4 family tree 2009 programs for my children also.

I am a data geek by training and I find that with such a large family, I get lost of areas that need fixing or attention…is there any way to export the family members into an excel spreadsheet so I could easily sort on missing information, missing spouse maidan names and such?

I have FTM 2009, and I also purchased US and International Marriage Records 1340-1980. How can I search this using FTM 2009. I cannot seem to find a way to search through these files using the program or my computer’s browser. Thanks!

I upgraded from FTM 16 to FTM 2009 which is completely different. Comments: 1.when making genealogy reports, please list the facts file as a list instead of paragraph form which is difficult to read. 2.On the genealogy reports, FTM adds information such as research tips. This should be an option the user can choose to use or not. 3.Relationships page is confusing. Would be easier to read if the name being worked on is at top of list in larger hi-lighted type (not just in pedigree chart at top) with spouse under that name and children next. Parents are already at top in pedigree chart and don’t need to be listed again. Siblings can be viewed by clicking on parents. It does take a while to learn the new version, but is a good one that just needs some tweeking to make it better. Thanks for working so hard to make it a good program!

I used the orginal family tree and when I purchased the new software last year was unable to download the trees that had been set up on my family. Does the new software allow older versions?

Is Family Tree 2009 available for Mac?

I have concerns about updating my current version (2005) as when I updated from the 2003 I had problems and lost info. Because of that I am afraid to update again even knowing that it is probably a good thing to do. My question is will upgrading to 2009 from 2005 be seamless?

I have enjoued using FAMILY TREE MAKER for many years. After I bought and installed 2008 I was ao disappointed that there was not a calendar.for Christmas every year I make a calendar for family members, with birthdays, and anniversaries. Also any new members and births are listed. Therefor I have had to keep the 2005 along with the 2008 and keep both updated, which becomes a real pain. Will there be a calendar in the 2009. If so I will buy it If not, I will not, I won’t. Thank You Joann

Will you have a stream for those who can not attend the live session?

I created a GEDCOM from FTM 16 and uploaded it to myfamily.com. There was missing data and in one instance, one of the children and her spouse, became the parents to her father. Had to spend time fixing these problems.
This software, for me, is not user friendly.

When I try to import my version 16 into 09, I am told it doesn’t exist. I tried GEDCOM & that didn’t work either! Any suggestions for a computer idiot?

Bee

How do I find marriage license in NY and IN.

In FTM 2006 I can’t get the oval crop to work on photo’s. I also need to have an 8×10 & 5×7 entry pages in scrap book to scan articles, birth certificates etc. and a hand drawn map of a town in Russia listing residences. I would like to have the style for the trees be applied to all the trees. I have over 2000 people and can’t do them individually. If one needs a special style for some one could it be done and saved just for that perticular need. The bibliographies that were placed in by research duplicates names and facts in the fact sheet rather than just adding it to an already known fact about the person. It will not let me put more than on source in. It erases the original source and replaces it. I have more than one source of people and researches to add. The more the better quality of facts. You also took away the copy and paste mechanism in the notes system. This means that you have to retype the same part of the notes to another person who also shares that info. Bring it back please.

In my last version of FTM I could customize a reports, so that I could run a list of who was buried in which cemetery. I have only had my 2009 2 days, but can’t see how to run that same report.

I just installed FTM 2009. However, I have a lot of research stored on ancestry.com but have seperate family lines for each grandparent. Is there a way to combine 2 family trees into one from ancestry.com into FTM?

If a person in the/my tree has more than one spouse how can I access back and forth between spouses? It was very easily done in my old version of Family Tree Maker but I haven’t figured out how to do it in Ver.9. Please Help! Thanks.

I would like to see a feature added to Family Tree Maker that would be a place to record individual lines of information from US Federal Census records. I have currently adapted my copy of Family Tree Maker is by going to “Add a Fact” for the person I want to record the information for. there I have made templates for each of the census years. then i add a “Type” line and paste the template default line into that individual space. Then I record the facts about that person as they are recorded in the census. When I pull up a “Family Group Sheet”, all of the data is listed after each person I have entered it for. I would suggest that standard templates would be a nice addition to the software. Of course if you use this idea I would expect compensation.

I hope you have gone back to the family view that you had previously. It is so much easier to see who the children are and to jump between family members. The current screen are very unfriendly.

On the other hand the web searches that are performed automatically are fantastic in 2008.

Last year I had FTM2006 and paid for a year of online data backup. Everything was working fine. Then, before the year was up, I bought a new PC with Vista OS. My FTM2006 wouldn’t work with Vista so I bought FTM2009. Now I find out that I cannot acces the paid database backup with FTM2009. The online advice was to save on a CD or on gmail backup. This is not right! I’m sorry I had to buy and use FTM2009. It’s not easy to use. You don’t see siblings on the famiy screen, there is no all-in-one chart and I can’t get to my online backup.

I am interested in how to enlarge the photos, and being able to put the photos in my notes section. This way I can tract with my notes where people lived ie houses, towns, and the activiies they did, ie picnics, cars,

How do I sign up to listen to the program? On March 12

Thank you

i purchased the DREADED FTM 2008 and it was a dog – i read somewhere that i could turn in my discs or proof of purchase to get 2009 at no charge…was i dreaming and why cant i locate this info now???

In printing pedigrees, I find only one parent’s lineage prints. Is there a way to show BOTH parents’ lineage in an hourglass pedigree chart?

I having been using Family Tree Maker since it was first marketed, and gotten upgrades each year. I found FTM 2008 counter-intuitive and not user friendly, so after using it for 2 weeks, I went back to Version #16 (2006) which I love. Have there been any additions to the 2009 version to make it make intuitive? THanks

Is there any way to just purchase 3 months of search service ant not have your credit card charged? The internet if full of complaints from people having trouble cancelling the subscription. Since the search is so expensive I would like to be able to just purchase a few months and not have fret over cancelling the membership

Currently I have been only using 2006 as the newer version (2008) is extremely slow when using large databases. Going from 1 screen to another screen in 60 seconds is not acceptable. Producing reports, with no pictures, with over 5000 names should not take over 5 minutes to produce on your screen. So my question is how much improvement has there been made with speed/response issues? Also if using version 2009, can you use the program without any connection with Ancestry.com?

Are you also going to include other calendars – e.g. the Jewish Calendar for alternate dates. For example, Jewish anniversaries are observed on the Hebrew date, not the Gregorian. Thanks

question regarding Family tree maker and Ancestry.com

When using the left you insert the information onto that site but it does not update family tree maker. So if this is correct one would have to input the answers into ancestry and the same information into family tree. Is this correct

Please advise

How do can I control the fonts and line spacing etc. (like Word)in the Notes field? Can I copy web information without the formatting and just show the text in one font size? After adding photos (from Picasa) and then closing the FTM, on the next opening of FTM the photo links are no longer there. Thank You.

I am an original FTM 3.0 but now have 2009 Platinum why can’t I incorporate my tree which has over 1,000 entries on to the new programme? There must be an easier way than re-entering all on FTM 2009!

The leaf “hint” is a very useful feature however I have many cases where there are “phantom” hints. This problem has also been cited on FTM forums with no resolution. When will the software team have a fix. Also, is there any other way of finding available hints other than clicking through each individual person in my tree and looking for the leaf to appear ?

Thanks for listening

Please let me know when the All-in-One tree has been restored. I cannot upgrade until that occurs. Seems very strange to have eliminated it as it is extremely useful.

I would like to know when we will be able to format our custom reports on legal sized paper and using the landscape which will allow us to use enough fields for the information we want to do a report on.

Although I can currently do a custom report for my needs, the printing does not print in landscape with fields across the entire page. Therefore, I would have to print over 100 pages for information I can print in landscape in 24 pages if I could print the 9 chosen fields on legal size paper and in landscape format.

I do a special report on my database of my Polish ancestors in order to share with several other people who are searching the same area and same surnames.

I hope that I have been able to explain myself clearly enough so that you understand my problem.

Thanks much,

I would like to see more source templates including how to source UK Birth, Marriage and Death Certs, Specific Church Records including Burial Sites and Gravestone Markers, Personal email documents/attachements and Latter Day Saints IGI and Pedigree references. Also infomation or template for citing the source would be very helpful (who, what, where, when, how format).

When will the UK 2011 census be available to ancestry.com subscribers ?

I am using FTM version 6.0 Ihave been told that I need to buy the complete new version not just upgrades. I am terrified that if I try to convert my files, they will scrabble. what is the best way to do thatand how much does FTM 2009 cost?

Last question…the place name field has an auto-fill function. This is very useful and saves time. Why is there not an auto-fill function for the decription field (I use this for occupations)

I need to know how to add pictures to my family tree. I would like to post pictures of all my relatives so the my children will always has access to them.

A change I would like to see:
Whenever there are references that are available to a particular person in my Tree, a green leaf icon appears. Since not all references are incorporated as I move about my database, I often end up reviewing the references more than one time, which wastes my time. Is it possible to make the leaf icon change color (eg: brown?) once you have visited that person’s references?

A change I would like to see:
I have information on many people in my Tree on the name of the cemetery where they are buried. Is it possible to include that in a pull-down menu after the death date/place where these places would be tabulated and easy to select for others in the same place. I know it can be added as a fact, but I believe this would be more appropriate and easier.

I am using FTM 2009. Can you please explain the icons found in “My Documents” and what each one contains!! There is a FTM folder,a white sheet with a green tree, and a green box with a white tree.

I have a computer in two states plus a laptop. When I move to a different computer, I copy the FTM files from one computer and drag the icon to a USB port to update my FTM files to the computer I will be working on.

What is the best way to update the files to the a different computer?

No one in my genealogy club knows how to do it in FTM 2009. No one understands what those icons are and what they contain! PLEASE HELP!

Two questions:
(1) Why does FTM 2009 do away with NGS format under “Genealogy Report Format”? It is superior to NEHG Register format because it allows for numbering unexplored lines, that may soon be uncovered w/o renumbering everyone in an index.

(2) Why does FTM 2009 put in a Ref. ID# by default. They are cumbersone, impossible to figure out how to change, and basically unnecessary. How can I get rid of them?

I have had a problem with FTM2009 that a family line is added to another family line on its own. This has happened a number of times. This last time I was not working in the lines that had the problems. I just happened to catch when printing out a report. I have corrected the situation in these 2 areas but believe that the glitch in the program eeds to be corrected as I don’t when or what family lines it may happened in again. I talked to Julie at service and she told me what to do to correct the immediate problem but insisted that I had entered wrong attachments. I hadn’t it needs a patch to correct this problem. Incidently, I am a user of FTM for over 10 years. Larry

For some reason I have more than one copy of my tree on the computer. Is there some way to merge all the copies together without loosing any of it? I have Family Tree 2009.

Please help me.

Is it possible to show spouse name on persons listed in the Individual Index ? I miss this function – I currently have FTM 2008 and have received the free FTM 2009 update (but have not yet loaded it- “scaredy cat”, I guess) but from some of the questions (#74), it looks like this is not offered on the FTM 2009 version either.

I would like to know if there is an easier way to jump ahead in the various pages; When there are thousands of names to go through, and I am unable to complete them in a sitting, I usually have to begin all over again at page one even though I may have gone through 2000 entries. So is there an easier way to skip to 2001 etc. My second question is if I began my family tree withone of my ancestor but want to go forward from that ancestor to the present, can I change the name of the tree so that I can accomplish this? I hope you will be able to address these questions in your webinar on March 12.

I am frustrated that when I want to add additional data to an individual person, I have to go into the tab (which sometimes takes forever when you have a HUGE tree open). Can’t there be shortcuts created to add common additionals (particularly burials, adoptions, military, divorce, etc). This would save huge amounts of time.

I would love to know how to resurrect my FTM 2006 .ftw so that FTM 2009 would load it. I have been sitting idle since Dec 2008 hoping to locate the programming talent to truncate my .ftw so that it will fit back into FTM 2006. At that point I feel FTM 2009 would load it. What do you think?

I have registered my concerns regarding publishing “Genealogy Reports – Register Reports” since FTM2008 was released and hoped that my concerns (and that of many others) would have been addressed in the latest service pack for FTM2009, but not to be. The issue is that when you generate a Register Report, and export to .rtf or any other format, every page contains a header, with name and and two lines, then a footer with date and time, page numbering and more lines, none of which is editable. In order for me to use the pages in a report, I must spend at least an hour deleting all the headers and footers in order to create an acceptable report. This information, while maybe useful in some cases, is a nightmare. This was not an issue in FTM 16, so why can’t the ability to edit the headers, footers be put back into FTM2009.
FTM 2009 has many wonderful new features, but unfortunately, I still have to use FTM16 to publish my genealogy information.

One more question – is there a way to merge two different family trees into one especially when many of the name of family members are found in both? Will FTM 2009 intuitively list the names only once or will I have to go through and purge each family tree record?

On the family view page why is there not a box that shows how old the person was when he/she died? I am sure most computers could handle the task if it was in the program. Of course the box would be blank if the person was still alive or the death date was unknown. It needs to be added and there is plenty of room on that page for that improvement.

1.I can’t attend at that time, so will it be recorded to view at a later time?

2. Will there be a special price to upgrade from FTM 2008?

What are the dangers of losing information when upgrading from 2005 to 2009? How would I prevent loss? or repair it if it occurs?

I’m still stuck on FTM 16 although I see a lot to love in FTM 2009. I’d love to move up, but need two “features” from FTM 16 before I can. I’d love to hear the developers thoughts on whether there are any future plans that could help me.

1. My FTM 16 database uses characters not supported by FTM 2009 in names and notes. When imported to FTM 2009, they get converted to “?”. When is FTM likely to provide full support for the FTM 16 character codees or better yet Unicode. In this day and age you really should be using Unicode throughout.

2. I create books for my family. As the book making capability of FTM 16 isn’t adequate, I export Genealogy Reports to .rtf files. With FTM 16 those .rtf files have markers for each part of a name identifying what it is (prefix, first name, middle name, last name, suffix). I have a scanner that imports the .rtf to Word 2003/2007 adding index fields for the names so all names are fully indexed. Do you have plans to provide something that will do the same thing for me such putting index fields in the .rtf output or marking names as FTM 16 does?

Thanks very much. I have loved using FTM and have published many family books to the tune of about 10,000 pages worth so far.

How do I correct the shared facts when I have two people the same in there. I can delete the fact but the names remains?

Question ????? Why are we asked to submit our tree to Ancestry and then if we want to add view or research we then have to pay to use it. I can understand that you need to make money to acquire other resources. But won’t you take care of the ones that are helping in making the project and site better for all to use.

Sometimes I just want to view my family tree and not save it new. Why can it not be like other programs and ask do you want to save it before doing it or asking first when exiting. The program should look and see if there is a change and then ask to save. This way I know when I actually did make some changes and not some bug or a typo get into the program. The last save date become useless if no changes were made and it is re-saved.

When I try to make a calendar I only get a calendar when I use the immediate family choice and it doesn’t have any names one it. The other choices are just a blank screen. Am I doing something wrong?

I will be traveling at 8pm on the 12th. Will there be another opportunity?

I want pictures from my scrapbook to appear on family group sheets.

Please tell me how to INDIVIDUALLY customize the facts. I do not need naturalization and immigration facts on new borns but I do need it for ancestors.
If this is not a current option, it should be made an option in the next version.

How can I mirrow-image a Tree Chart?. I had to go back into PhotoShop and that wasn’t what I was aiming for. We’re having our annual family reunion on May 2, 2009 I added 20 family members to picture and placed it behind an all in one family tree chart. I want to press it on t-shirts. Mirrow-image did not work on Word, nor on PDF files. But I did manage to get it on Photoshop and without boxes on the names. On this took me manay hours to work my project.

Will this new software run on window 7 32 or 64 bit. Also can you download my info from 2005 ver Family Tree maker.

When printing a tree, is there a way to add a color (ie blue, red, etc) to highlight particular ancestors. Example: to color all Rev War Patriots in bright blue?

Hi,
When I add media using the Family tab’s Media icon on the right-hand panel, it does not appear on the Media tab for the respective person on the Person tab. This is true in reverse as well – media added to the Person’s tab doesn’t appear on the Family tab for the same person. (When I add a note to either tab, I do see it in both places). Is this a bug?

Thanks.

I’m about ready to throw away FTM 2009. It is difficult to try to navagate. Trying to add or merge info is impossible. Everytime I open the program, it says,”updates available” but when I click on the update bar, program just sits there and eventually shuts down. I am very disappointed. New laptop required 2009 w/Vista, what do I do now?

Over the weekend I merged two different versions of my family tree. Everything went fine during the merge but now the program crashes after about the fifth thing I click on. This is to say the least very annoying. Is there a patch to download or something I can do to correct this problem?

I added a whole line of my family to the wrong person! After many generations of additions, I went back and realized my mistake. It had been hours of work and I didn’t know how to correct it. I haven’t been back to Treemaker since. Can you help?

Finding it difficult to integrate FTM 2009 and Ancestry.com.
The two seem to have totally different interfaces, couldn’t we have one interface that works on both sites.
I’m new to making Family Trees. I started on Ancestry.com and have now bought FTM 2009. I find ‘merging’ from Ancestry.com I end up with innumerable duplicated persons. What’s the best way to merge?

I just purchased FTM 2009, but have not installed it yet. Do I need to get it installed before the webinar on Thursday?

Can I split a tree to make two separate trees? To do so would make things more managable

When printing the Extended Family Chart only the names appear. Would it be possible to be able to choose what data you’d like to appear e.g. DOB, place of birth, occupation, notes?

Electronic obituaries are commonly available. Where is a good place to put them in Family Tree?

I have our family tree on my old laptop and up to date. Now I bought the 2009 for vista on our new laptop. can I copy from old laptop and put on new unit to save all the typeing.

Thank You
Please tellme how to do it.

I have been a user of FTM since it first came out. There have been some major improvements in how source data can be entered. I would like some tips on the best way to organize sources & how to get my older existing source data into the newer templates.

It would be great if there was a way to prevent duplicates. It is very frustrating as I have sometimes I end up with five or more duplicates of same family ancestor. Also, I would like family members to be able to download the information I have collected into their own software programs so it can be intergrated with their family geneology. I have sent several emails asking if this was possible, but never hear back from you.

In version 16 you could search the index of names by female’s married name. Is this possible in the 2009 version? I am unable to find that function in the new version.

Is there a new and easier way to upload our Ancestry trees, rather having to use gencom. Also, is there some way to tie in our research to foreign ancestry files that would give us the green leaves we get now.

Thank you,

Rich

I currently use FTM2006 and am very pleased with it. I have not jumped to upgrading because all your census/birth records/etc are mostly for US & European countries. I would consider upgrading ONLY if I will have access to records from Asia. Also is there any place where I can obtain records for American Indian and/or Mayan ancestry?

My main family tree is done on my computer using FTM 2009. I also have a tree online with Ancestry. Are there any plans to make it possible to update my online file using my FTM file without creating a whole new online tree? Or to download specific info from my online tree to my FTM tree?

Why is it when I print the Register Report that it fails to show everyone. If I have a married person with no children and I have not put in marriage information (all blank)it will not print the spouse. The marriage field is not required. If I put in anything in that field then the spouse will appear when printed. I can not make up dates and places to get the spouse to appear. Now remember no date or children. I have reported this twice to FTM.
Please address this problem.
Also I have siblings that were attached (with no parents) in the old FTM that are now all seperated and not attached to each other or anyone.

I tried to send My family tree info to the World wide web. but is says that a error happened, how do i get in to correct the error when i do not know what it is. and where it is I am useing F. T. M. 2006

I am hoping the new upgrade restores the FULL versatility to the CUSTOM REPORT?

Why do I often hit a dead-end on Ancestry.com when researching European ancestry circa 1300? I get a message that I either “am behind a firewall or the server is unavailable.” I know it’s not a firewall issue, because the site responded to my previous query just fine. So, why are servers so unavailable? There are lines I have given up on because all I ever get is that server message.

I have FTM version 16. How do I upgrade to FTM 2009. There are no instructions I can find on the website.

I really am confused about linking back and forth between my tree on Ancestry.com and my data files in FTM 2009. I thought they were interchangeable in that once I downloaded documents from Ancestry.com into my online tree I could save that tree as a GEDCOM and then update my stand-alone database and visa versa. That hasn’t worked for me as photos and census records, etc have not transferred from one to the other. I find it VERY confusing to know whether I’m downloading something to my Ancestry.com tree or my database, so I know I’ve lost things in the process. HELP!

I have family tree 2006 ( I started with 2002 I think) I have over 1000 names in it but I have not been working with it for a few years. I woudl like to post it to a web iste and have family members be able to access and update. How can I do this?

Hello I started with FTM 4.0 and have been using FTM 2006.
My question is why can’t I use any of the FTM World Family trees cd’s I purchased years ago to look up or see the family trees? I bought a new computer about three years ago and I have not been able to see or get any information from them at all.
Thank you,
James W.W.

The search results are tremendous however, I prefer to sort and manipulate them myself. I appreciate the “Leafy Match” but there are times when transcription errors cause likely matches to fall outside of the likely candidates. I would like to get at the entire result set at once. For instance, I had 9000+ hits using a combo of my grandfather’s name, birth year, death year, and birth location. I would like export these results to MSExcel, CSV, or MSAccess and apply my own filters, sorts, etc.. to enable more comprehensive and custom data deduplication and search techniques. Paging through 9000+ results at 50 rows per page is maddening. Reducing the result set by using explicit terms is limiting. Please provide a mechanism to accomodate this either within FTM2009 or outside of FTM2009 or both.
Thank You
Mark

I have been using FTM for about 15 years or more. I started with Personal Ancestry File. Don’t know how many versions I have used. I am currently using V.2006. I have about 1,000 names on file. What are the advantages of using 2009? Also, I recently sent my backup CD to my grandson and it went into his new FTM OK. I don’t know if he has 2009 or not.

Jim

I will be out of town and not have access to a computer on the 12th. Is there an option to “view it later” I’m excited about the potential of FTM, but am not swift at using it so would appreciate the opportunity. Thanks

Have you updated your FTM 2008 to the critical FTM 2008 SP3 Patch?

Help About shoud show 17.00.965

Marriage notes are there

Go to People>Person View and select the marriage (shared) fact

You can then add Marriage notes, sources and Images.

You can donload any file to a thimb drive

In the case of FTM 2008/09 data files (the ones ending in .FTM), simply copy and paste from Windows Explorer or My Computer.

I assume that you want to do this for back up purposes/

John D

Have you put the old “Genealogy Report” back into the program?

# 378 Deborah

You should install the SP1 patch for FTM 2009 and the version will be 18.00.305

John D

When merging a couple the other day, for some reason their descendants did not follow them as descendants. Everything I have tried does not help resolve the problem. How do I correct that problem, or is it a problem with the program?

How do I print the individual and shared facts for an individual? Also, how do I print the time line for an individual?

#392 Greta

Make a custom report of your file like and index and use the Share facility to export as a CSV file

Excel or Access (even Word) will open a csv file just fine

John D

I’ll limit myself to quote blog 26: “I have FTM version 16. How would I transfer files from FTM ver 16 to FTM 2009?”

You showed me how to get my files converted to the new 2009, but I opted for not doing it in the believe that doing so might ruin my long file. I have put many hours in it. Not I won’t convert!

It is even easier in FTM 2008/09

In the people workspace where you have the two parents (Shown in boxes), you will see a number to indicate the number of spouses

Simply click on the number in the box to see a spouse selection list.

Note also in FTM 2009 SP1 you have a new set preferred spouse control

John D

When clicking on Web Search Results from my FTM, the page opens inside the FTM application which means I cannot go back to my tree without lossing the web results page. It would be very convenient if I could navigate through my tree on FTM while also viewing the web results.

Why does 2009 edition get stuck and jams when sometimes I request a Register report of more than 5 generations, I sent this in as a tech request and they said it would be fix with the update, but still jams for me?

I would like to purchase the new version, but I’m switching over to a mac…I’ve asked this question several times in the past…will you release the new version for macs?

I have used FTM for many years. I am very disappointed in 09. When the change was made a lot of my pictures in the family page were put in the wrong place. Now if I decide to use 09 I will have to go through all my sheets and See if the right picture is in its place. Also I have a large family( back by 16 generations) and would like to print it as a book myself. If there is a way I can not find it. I don’t think we should have to upload it to use this program.
Thanks

Is there any way to transfer over my info from Family Tree Maker 2006 to 2009?

Thanks, Sandy

With all due respect, this blog is pretty worthless to me. Why not put the effort into a forum environment, which allows categorization of subject matter and gets the users more involved in helping each other. There’s lots of questions on this blog and almost NO ANSWERS!
Thanks

Precaution have a backup

Other than that as FTM 2009 makes a Copy of your file then converts the copy the risk is neglible and I haven’t heard of anyone who has lost data this way

John D

#452 Nancy

Use the Share facility to export the tree chart as an image

Save the image file and use it like any other image file

John D

#454 Liz

yes

Use the marked boxes capability, does the job superbly. FTM 2008 SP3 or above.

Also

Have a look at the blog on chart printing by Tana

Where do I find the SP1 patch for FTM 2009?

# 460 Phyllis

No, although it might be useful to have a play before the webinar

Also go to this link and have a look at some earlier webinars

Use a memory stick (thumb drive or CD to copy your data file, the one ending in .FTM (FTM 2008/09) or .FTW FTM 16 or earlier to your new computer

Save it in a convenient folder

Now open the file with FTM 2009 from the Plan View

John D

#475 Gareth

Install the FTM 2009 program

Register it

Install the SP1 patch (it will be auto detected)

Then from the Plan View (new tree tab) locate your earlier data file (the one ending in .FTW) and FTM 2009 will make a copy of it, then convert and load it

That’s it!!!

I have used Family Tree Maker for many years and originally created a seperate family file for each branch of the family. Now I would like to merge some of those files without having to edit numerous duplications. Is there an easy way?

two issues:
Why can’t one print a timeline?
Why do individual reports only print “preferred” facts – esp. if you’ve entered multiple occupation or residence facts.
Or is there another way to print the list of all facts about an individual.

I have two questions that have not been able to be answered by your help people.
1. When I began using the new 2009 I only brought in the basic family. That consisted of about 400 people. At that time I was able to put the mouse over their name on the left of the program, people pane, and it would show thier relationship to me. Now it will not do that anymore. WHY?
2. I continue to check for any hints found by the program and or Ancestry. They find nothing, yet I can go on to Ancestry and search the area that I know this person was to have been and find documents that clearly state their name, etc. Why is the searching capabilities so poor?
3. An extra one for question being this. If I find a report that has to do with my family on Ancestry I can not link it to the person in FTM 2009. The only way to link it is through the tree on Ancestry and this is a new tree and I do not plan to upload until correct and more complete. So how do I connect the located record with the program? Is it able to be attached to the entire family listed or why I do have to reattach to each family member shown on the document?

Hope you can answer some of these questions.

Thanks

Moving from version 5 to 2009 was a real shock. It took me a long time to find the screen for entering an individual’s information or, as I had a need to do recently, to delete information. Thank goodness some of the old commands were left in the 2009 edition and I’m getting use to it but it was NOT intuitive for me.

I have a question about titles. I finally found how and where you can add a title to a person names as in Capt. Rev. Major. But in doing so it moves them from the alphabetical order and puts them as if their first name is Capt. or Major. Why and how is this to be corrected. FTM 16 did not do this. It really messes you up when looking for say all the John’s and one is a Capt. and is not under the J’s

I just bought FTM 2009 ,, is there something new out besides this that
I spent my money on???

I went back to FTM 16 because 2008 and 2009 frequently locked up with my desktop’s Vista Home Premium. 16 works fine.

Will the latest version of 2009 run reliably now under Vista, or are we users still beta testing?

I can depend on 16 so I’m good to go with or without 2009, but I see a couple of 2009 features I might like.

Thanks,

Bill

Why, when searching married females, is the search done for her married name and not maiden name? Why on some merges on census information, will it let you include other family members, but other times it only lets you enter the searched for individual? Sometimes I end up with duplicate, or more, people in my tree, how I don’t know, why can’t I merge these duplicates so I don’t lose information one may have that the other(s) don’t? Thank you, I enjoy Family Tree Maker 2009 very much, have even met several “internet cousins” because of it. Keep up the good work.

I have nearly 12,000 names now in my
FTM 16 and I am planning to make a family history book. Will all my data in FTM 16 transfer into FTM 2009? If so, will this work like an upgrade? I am really used to adding data to the FTM 16, will the FTM 2009 be much different? Thanks.

Brenda
I am new and just learning, so the answer may be there but I haven’t come across it yet. How do you enter a relative that was born prior to the marriage that did not marry the father of the child. Which is the situtation of my grandfather.

Will we be able to view the siminar later if we miss it when it airs?
Thank you

I am running Windows Vista.

When changing place names (i.e. place of birth/death/marriage) if you do this more than once, the software crashes.

The software has the ability to put everyone in chronological order; however, when you export to a GEDCOM and upload it online, the end result lists people in the order you entered them in your file and not in order of birth or marriage. This was a problem with 2008 and still in the 09 version.

In 2008, it took several seconds to enter information in the fields. I am having this problem with the 09 version, but only in the date fields. You enter a date and hit tab or enter and it takes about 5-7 seconds before you can move on to the next field. At the top of the column it says it is calculating relationship. This doesn’t happen all of the time, but certain times when I start the software I have to exit and restart the software before it stops.

Thank you for your time!

Two qustions ?.
1. How do you insert a picture into the top of family group sheet. (As shown on page 7 of the intruction page of ftm 6.00 people have told me how to do it but it will not work in Ver 16.

2 when I go into Scrap Booking to view photo’s just of one person my photo,s are not there. By clicking where the Photo shuld be they will appear I have to do this with each Photo block. This only happens with one persons photo’s the rest are fine in the whole programe..

Is there a way in FTM 2009 to move an indivdual from one parent/child relationship to another much like its possible Ancestry.com? It seems this can only be accomplished in FTM 2009 by deleting from one relationship then adding to the other.

Why does it take so much longer to open FTM 2009 than it did to open previous versions such as 2005 & 2006?

is there a way to print the chart (has boxes w/lines) that show all people that you have entered into the family tree? for example i have 14 generations on husbands side and would like a chart showing all people from the earliest to him (14 generations)

1. The Set Spouse Order function has reverted to the former version where you can only set one spouse as preferred. I need to be able to set the order (1-2-3-4) of spouses in chronological order for many of my pioneer ancestors. Now they again print with the preferred spouse first which often is not the first marriage, so can’t share with family members because the reports look like I made the errors on purpose and this would surely arouse hurt feelings among sibs and others that I cannot afford. This was fixed briefly and I loved it but it has now disappeared.
2. Need to have sources in chronological order and be able to set order of those not obviously chronological (such as non-census sources). Even when I add census sources in chronological order they display in random order (I have even tried unlinking them and relinking them in chronological order but they still mix up in random order — again it makes the reports look ridiculous and not good enough quality to share.
3. Would like the capability of having all children in blended families to display in the Family portion of the screen and on the reports. Again, I can’t share the reports with siblings because it looks like I am being discriminatory and that would cause a great kerfluffle that I’m not willing to engage in. Unfortunately in this day and age not all children are born to married couples and not adopted or “claimed” by later spouses of parent.
4. The panel on the right side of the main screen (with name and b-m-d fact entry fields) keeps disappearing when I switch to other screens, such as reports or other programs that have the information I am entering into FTM) and I have to keep dragging it back so I can enter my data.
5. Ditto previous comments about (A.) bringing back the All-In-One Report, (B)cleaning up the grammar and phrasing in the reports — it is very disconcerting –and again makes the reports read so poorly that I won’t share them with family members because they read like an uneducated person wrote them or someone who makes lots of typos or doesn’t know good English (and there are punctuation problems in the source citations also). The way the reports read now is totally embarrassing. I want to make books for my nieces and nephews and their descendants but not if the reports make me look like I don’t know how to write. I don’t want to go down in history being represented this way to people who will never know me personally.
6. I would like an easy way to split my FTM data file into separate surname files. I have 3700 names in my one file. I would like to be able to give GEDCOM files to listers on Rootsweb mailing lists with the lines that we share, but not include people that are not in their lines, and do the same for relatives in specific branches. I guess I should have made many separate FTM files in the beginning.
In closing, I must say that I love FTM, all versions, but 2008/9 with the new interface the best. Recently, I rec’d an email saying I’d be getting an update soon, but so far I haven’t. Thanks and keep up the great work!

How will we get these updates??

I am in agreement with #71, what happen to the alpha list. The last time I had a printed alpha list was in 2007 before updating to the FTM 2009. In fact the report was called Individual List, nothing like the Individual Report in FTM 2009. The Individual List – listed everyone in alpha order. The list listed an individual with a reference number (ID)and included the following info under his/her name (father, mother, birth, death,burial,spoue/mate, marriage, child, and etc.) This was a great report. I have recently
e-mail the tech center asking how we can create a new report for an alpha list.

Also, I would like to be able to show a child with the family with both parents; even if the parents never married. I don’t like how the FTM 2009 version will show that a couple is married when in fact they never married. You basically have to list each parents separate within your database. After spending unlimted hours inputting this data into the system we should be able to print a decent type of report for our family members. Basically the FTM is good, but lacking in some area. Bring back the Version 16 with a new updated look.

Thanks
Carolyn

A couple of things about the Outline Descendant report:

1) When exporting to a CSV file, it’s pretty much unusable since I am expecting every record to have the same layout, i.e., even if the field does not have any data it is still accounted for. When exported to CSV and then imported to Excel, the columns are all over the place.

2) When creating the Outline Descendant, I’d like to be able to add the same field as many times as I want, like in FTM16. That is so I can have the Birth Date and the Birth Local in separate columns.

Both issues did not exist in FTM16.

Will we have the ability to save reports to PDF but as one page instead of several pages?
Version 16 had both options.

1. Can FTM be changed to allow an upgrade of data from FTM to my .com.au family. As it is now, I can only upload a complete tree.

2. Also downloading data found may not attached to correct individual and create an un-required person entry.

3. When merging individuals, there does not appear to be any way to select data in both persons to keep. I have merged and lost all of one data set.

4. When will more Australian databases become available?

# 523 Louis

Use the controls in the Person menu attach, detach etc whilst in the People Workspace

These work much the same as they do in FTM 16 or earlier

John D

#525 Ann

Use the boxed descendant chart in the Publish area and note the controls in the RH panel

John D

#529 Indy

In FTM 2009 SP1 the ability to export csv files in columns has solved this problem

#530 Indy

The ability to export as a single page PDF (as well as multiple pages) was added in FTM 2009 SP1

How do I import my family tree from Ancestry.com to my family tree maker?

I find FTM 2009 a little confusing. I am trying to backup onto dvd and it starts to record then stops stating FTM has encounter an error. I would like to register for March 12, but 8pm is a little late for me to get on the computer. Is there any earlier webinars?
Thank you, Susan

How can I be usre I can use my 2006 files on the new significantly reengineeered Versions.

This may seem like a silly question to some – I have an older version of FTM and have entered a lot of info on both my family and my wife’s family. My question – Do I just continually enter information into one file or should it be in separate files? What I have seems to work fine, but I don’t know if this is the correct way to do it.

Been doing genealogy research since 1957, have purchased/used/upgraded to several editions of FTM over the years. However, the radical change in format from Ver. 16 to FTM 2008 almost lost me as a customer; it was like starting all over. Have now purchased several “back-up” versions of FTM 16 since I couldn’t find any “cross-reference material” to easily locate familiar functions between Ver 16 and 2008. Have been reluctant to buy 2009. Suggestions on why buy 2009?

Under FTM 2005, the kinship reported gave numerous relationships between the same two people, now it only gives one, why? Is this a problem and a fix is on the way? If not is the one relationship that comes up now the strongest relationship, or how is it determend?

If I put our Family Tree on Ancestry.com, can I up date that material. In the past, this was not possible, and I use the Tree to put info, even if maybe not right as a holding area for data that need checking out. This is the reason I have neve uploaded it.

How can I print out my entire family from great grandchildren to my gggg-grandparents on one listing.

there was no link in your email to direct me to the webinar on the day of the event…. can you please send me another link in order to allow me to join the webinar without fail?….
thank you … my email address is
:waltsisk@hotmail.com

I didn’t like the look and feel of ver 2008/2009 so I continued using ver 16. After reading these blog entries I uninstalled 2009. I’m concerned that as 2009 continues to misinterpret and change data entry, the inacuracies will inevitably find their way onto the internet and have a life of their own. This could be a giant leap backward for genealogy.

I have tried to using Family Tree Maker 2009 but cannot get it to merge with my other issue. How do I do this? It says it will merge but…. I may be doing it all wrong.

I have a seminar scheduled at the same time as the webinar. Is there any way I can retrieve the info. at a later time?

In FTM 2009, will it be possible to create a descendant chart, for instance, then copy it to a CD to have printed by an outside source?

When will the design team address function rather than features. When I first purchased FTM it was in part because the sales team assured me that I could enter at least one million names and more. After 250,000 most features won’t work and the earlier versions work better than the newer ones.

It’s time to make a work horse and not just add bells and whistles.

Thanks,

Doc

We will be having a family reunion this year and I would like to know how to combine several family tree charts?

Is it possible to record the webinar for later viewing? Some of us have to work at that time or be otherwise indisposed, so it would be extremely beneficial to be able to view it whenever we can.

Like many of you I had many problems with 2008 and 09.

The solution to most of my issues was a brand new Vista Premium computer and a high speed internet connection. I’m afraid that if you don’t have BOTH of these things you should stay with FTW 16 until you can make the expenditures.

However we are still cursed with the GEDCOM legacy of Date, Location and Description for many items where these just do not make sense. Especially SS # and Burial. I would rather see a separate category call
Cemetery with an address field that I enter once. THE CEMETERY IS NOT GOING TO MOVE.

Also there is not coordination between City, County, State, country between FTW and Ancestry’s many records. Example: Mount Airy, Surry, North Carolina, USA is “required” by FTW, but I’ve seen at least 20 variations in Ancestry. Please clean is up.

I have reported these issues before but unless you all want to abandon the GEDCOM format forever, any improvements will be small and hampered by its limitations.

I would really love to attend your Webinar, but will not be able to.
Will you be putting it in some sort of podcast so I could see it later?
Also, will you be repeating this at another date?
Thank you,
Don

I don’t have the 2008,2009 I have Version 16.Haven’t been doing much researching the past few years. What do I need to catch up and how much will it cost me?

I have entered some of the children in the wrong order. How do I put them in chronological order without deleteing the information and re-entering it?

Also, I have spent quite a lot of time entering informatiion in Ancestry.com. How do I transfer this history to FTM in it’s entirety?

Is it possible to take a class at a community college for genelogy? I always feel better when I know I am doing everything right.

Type your comment here.

What is the difference between the new “extended family chart” and the “all in one” chart resident in some of the prior versions of FTM?
When will the extended family chart be available?

I built a family history document using FTM 2005, including FTM charts and town histories and biographical sketches. Would this file from FTM 2005 be compatible with FTM 2009?

Michelle,Could you explain how to get to the “merge” button you referred to in #23. Maybe I just don’t know how to get to the Web Workspace you mention, but I don’t see the “merge” or the “search result detail” heading anywhere I normally go.

My wife had been married before and had two kids. After we were married, we had one kid. How can I bring them all together on one page. And will FTM ever go back to the way it was and have every thing on one page with blocks. You just type in info in one block and it automatic jumps to next block. It seems that was simbler. Life is too complicated as it is. LOL. Ken

I need to print out family view sheets using a larger font size so I can read it without changing my glasses. I have tried everything and only Frontpage works, but it is a real hassle to do it that way for each sheet. Any suggestions?

I have been a fan of FTM since it came out, I now have FTM and FTM 2009. Someone told me that I would like Legacy 7 better so I bought it to see what it was all about. I found that it was more accurate as far as putting information into it and has a lot more functions and options. When printing reports it does it to the genelogy standard which is easier to understand when looking at other program files.

I wish you could make combine the best of FTM and Legacy to make a perfect program. have you ever checked out Legacy 7?

Are we ever going to have a genealogy report that we can cut and past into e-mail’s like the older versions.

To me, those were the good ones.

How do i bring up pictures, I have downloaded to each person separately.Say I have 35 pictures downloaded to one person, how do I get only those 35 to come up? And can I edit any of these pictures.
Thanking you for yor help.

When will the 1940 census and later come out?

My sister comes out as half sister from the transfer from 2006 version. On 06 she was “natural” as I have indicated in ‘08 version. But, she is shown as “half” and I am shown as “half” to her. I can’t seem to correct this realtionship problem.

Will there be a MAC version of FTM?

I’m looking at the MAC software, and nothing seems to match the FTM I used in my Windows environment years ago.

PLEASE…there are more MAC users now than ever before…and we need a MAC version.

I cannot enter divorces in 2009. The Official Guide to FTM pg. 72 states to click Person tab, then click Relatiobships button. I can’t find Relationships button. HELP!

I bought 2008 FTW and my files would not transfer to it. So it is just sitting there taking up space on my computer. Not the right kind of file if I remember correctly.

I would like to see a better feature for handling non-marriages where there are children involved. When you add “non-marriage” in the custom feature it gives you “Date” and “Place”. There is no “Date” or “Place” for a non-marriage. It is a non-marriage. If you add the name as a “spouse” it will print out as a “husband” or “wife” with no
marriage date, leaving one to believe that the marriage date was
not known, when in fact there was no
marriage. If there is a better way to show non-marriages, I would like to know what it is.

Before I got proficient with FTM, I downloaded a lot of facts from ancestry.com. As a result I have several Birth facts, for example, from different censuses. Is there a way I can merge them all into one Birth fact and keep all the sources, without redoing everything?

As nearly as I can determine, the current FTM requires data file retrieval versus having the new program installed over existing data.
Is that correct? If so, why the change in procedure? The old way seemed simpler and with fewer required steps.

I want to put a pedigree view on a web site for all my relatives to see. How do I do this? Can I put it onto my own family web site? Can the relatives make corrections in the predigree themselves?

Initializing FTM places me at a window for someone who has no data already on file. How can I bypass that window and have the program open to where I left off the last time I used FTM?

Have a new computer that is 64-bit. Will the software run? Hesitant to load as I have had problems with other software not running and/or messing up the machine.

I have a number of duplicate entries on my tree and whilst I have merged these people, I cannot get rid of the duplicate – any comments as to how I can achieve this.

I have 52000 individuals in my table. Yes that is a correct number.
I have unattached individuals, or small families with NO link by marriage or blood to me.
Sometimes I will find a fathe mother and child and no grandparents or other children. I want to cull them out. They may be similar to an other individual but combine like people gives me people that are similar names but birth/death dates and parents may be different.
1 can you give me a way to combine like names ONLY Matching Birth Date, – Only Matching Death Date – Only Matching MOther or b=father or both?
2. Can you give me a way to separate into two file A. All satelite families with absolutely NO connection by direct family or marriage and B. all others which is any and all individuals that can be connected to me by marriage, blood uncles, aunts etc on my tree and somehow connected?
3, For the calendatr can you give me a way to say go three generations back and forward and only select thos individuals directly connected to me? Right now I have to go through all 52 K individuals and selecvt the ones I want.

I am wondering if I am able to pick specific individuals from my FTM and upload just those people to Ancestry.com or vice versa.

How can I download my tree to your Family Tree Maker on line? Written instructions would be helpful because I cannot hear your staff.
Also, I do not want “USA” in my files; how do I get rid of ALL of them?

Does the new FTM support foreign languages?
Just looking for standard MS Windows language support.

Go to http://pastftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/pastftm.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=BWYu5wHi and look for article 2271 for a discussion on the pros and cons of a single vs a multiple files.

Personally I like one file as it saves keeping two files in sync and if I run pedigree reports for my children/grandchildren etc I get both sides ie display all the relatives not just half of them.

FTM 2009 will make a copy of your FTM 2005 file then convert it

You can also leave FTM 2005 on your computer as well as FTM 2009

I am new at this family tree thing any advice in getting families to share their info?

# 571 Lyn

Go to the People Person View

You have three tabs

Facts, Timeline and you guessed it, Relationahips :-)

Click on the relationship tab then edit in the RH pane

John D

For Decades I’ve been requesting the addition of Demise (Death) dates on the calendar. You have every other date but not Demise dates. This is very important to us Jews. It might help your sales too. That would not be bad’ would it?? Thanks. KED

#578 Sharon

FTM 2009 will run on a 64 bit computer

You muust have a copy of the Microsoftfile WSE 3.0 installed

Most Vista installations have this file but it is a free download from MS

After that no problems

Try bribary or threats :-)

Seriously this is always a problem and you have to encourage them maybe offering them a reward by providing them with nice charts and reports, even a book

Need instructions on how to download info from Ancestry.com to FTM v 2008 deluxe-Thank you

Hi, I had started out with my familytree maker nice and neat and now I have a mess with the same names in it 3 times and sometime more. How can I correct this? I am not a young person and know all that I should. Thanks so much for your time. Shirley

Will we be able to upgrade from a much earlier version? I haven’t upgraded for about 3 years. I am sure this question will be one of the first things you answer, but how much will this upgrade cost? Plus will there be a book available to help us learn the new program.

My Aunt wanted another baby. Another woman didn’t want her baby. Her & her husband went to the hospital to have the baby using my Aunt & Uncle’s name. So the baby became my cousin even though she is not blood related. Technically my cousin is not adopted since the birth certificate shows my Aunt & Uncle’s name. Any suggestion on how to show her in my tree??

I have 2 questions:
1) What’s the proper way to use my tree in FTM 2009 and my tree on Ancestries.com and keeping them both current? What I’ve been doing is using the Gedcom files with my FTM as the MASTER. I seem to notice missing information when going from Ancestries to FTM.
2) Is there something similar in FTM like in Ancestries where you can get a list of all persons that have “hints”?
From all the questions and problems listed here it seems to be time that a class, of some sort, is needed. Maybe on cd’s or stand up in different regions. I’d be willing to pay for some sort of instructional course beyond what’s in the books that are available. I LOVE this hobby!

I have FTM version 16 and followed the directions to transfer all my data from my old genealogy software. Unfortunately, only part of the data transferred. I’m afraid if I try repeat the transfer process, I’ll lose the new data I’ve added to FTM. If I upgrade to the new version of FTM, that may just compound the current problem. Help!

In Version 16 and before you could export a file or section to a previous version of FTW. Will this capability be returned. It was very usefull to me.

I hope that the Webinar will address how to coordinate FTM with ancestry.com. I have most of the information on ancestry.com but if I open up FTM it seems like I have to start over. Do I need to keep downloading a new gedcom file each time?

I don’t know if you can transfer information from Ancstry to FTM. If this is possible please tell me how.

After entering data into FTM why would it automatically update the files in Ancestor.com?? (i.e., birth, death, location of interment)

I have merged 5 families in my data and now I have everyone listed 5 times!! I have called but never get an answer. I have been trying to delete each seperately. I have to many names and will be dead before I finish. Is there a way to delete the same people? I have tried find duplicate but it doesn’t work.

I have Version 16 of FTM. When doing a Web. Search on any given name, under the far right hand side there is a column called “Status” with a drop down list. If you click on any of those, say for instance, “done” leave that page and then come back it does NOT hold that information. This is a waste of time since previous versions did hold this information. What happened? Many times I forget just what information I looked at until I click on it again. It would be nice if the new 2009 version held this information. Otherwise take that column out. Thank you for your assistance in this. Paula

Is there a choice of presentation for step children. My printout simply shows them as children of the step parent. Sometimes that is fine, but how can they be listed as step children in the reports?

Thanks

There is an error in my Family Tree posted on-line. This error was posted by another individual. How can I have this error corrected?

My Grandfather (who raised me on the Oklahoma Cherokee Reservation) registered on the DAWES rolls (for Cherokee) in 1903 (I think the year is right). How do I get an actual copy of the enrollment form that he signed? I would love to see his mark.

The screen reads, Type a name or select someone from your tree.

I try to do that and it doesn’t accept my selection.

This is going to sound funny, but I had trouble with Family Tree maker when trying to connect family relations where there were intermarriages within 2 families. For instance, my wife’s Father’s Brother married my wife’s Mother’s Sister. This link seemed impossible to make in FTM 2008 (connecting the same mother to 2 people on the tree) unless I put multiple entries for the same person. I haven’t messed with the 2009 version yet to see if I can do it there.

I’m guessing this isn’t a common problem, but its one I’ve been having.

The other thing I’ve been trying to do is to really create an extensive family tree that is printable with extended family included. I couldn’t do it in FTM 2008 and resorted to doing it by hand with MS Publisher. Any plans to add this capability? I wanted to make something nice I could have printed on very large paper through a printing service. Or even if I could print it in pieces myself and assemble it would be ok also.

-Mat

I want to know how to add the sources that are in my Ancestor.com to my FTM. I don’t want to have to type all of them in. I only seem to find a note file to put all my sources in. Is there another way?

I also want to know if the new FTM has the ability to make charts the way the old .16 and lower did. I have made beautiful charts that are fascinating to people using this feature, but understand that it was removed. I have put pictures and flags of the birthplace, plus symbols, for imigrants, converts to Mormon church, Rev. War vets, etc. Without this ability I don’t think FTM is very valuable. I also made a circular chart with these things, but I had to cut and paste all the pictures. Will that capability ever be a part of this program? JoAnn

When bringing up a Custom Report it gives me all the residences, the graduation information but does not give me the education information. The education information is noted on the “fact” list. I have taken off the “preferred” check mark so it would show all.

I am soooo hoping that this webinar will speak of the incompatibilities when using VISTA, I have had absolutely nothing but problems with the Family Tree Maker 2008, what a waste, I lost all information I had on this program (still have dependable 2006 Version) uninstalling then reinstalling and the patch did not work, I had no connectivity whatsoever, it was truly a nitemare and I expect more out of these new programs to co-work with Vista. Please help.

Like some others, I am hestitant to up-grade to FTM 2009 because of concerns already mentioned. I have asked this question before and never gotten an answer. How do I enter parents for a child who never married? I want the parents to be shown in reports but in an unmarried relationship.

I really don’t like the 2009 Family Tree version like I do the 2006. The calendar will not let you just call it up on a separate link and also you cannot move your tree up and down to just view certain parts of your tree. Just not as easy to control as the older version.

In the 2009 FTM how do I input two brother’s who married two sister’s ? I end up duplicating one set of parents. Is there a merge that I am missing?

Thank You, Eleanor Rooney

Can I go straight from FTM 16 to FTM 2009 without installing FTM 2008?
My database has 156,000,individuals and FTM 2008 srops after 100,000.

I have purchased and used virtually every version of FTM since FTM version 4 and was pleased with all of the improvements in each version until the 2008 version which I also purchased. I have heard and read, including in the November, 2008 Webinar the offer to all FTM 2008 purchaseres that they can get a free upgrade to FTM 2009. I have not yet gotten mine. There is no clear, specific instructions that I have seen as to a link where to get it. The offer seems very generous but I have to say that it seems just as disingenuous without any clear way to get it. I would appreciate receiving an email with a specific link to get the update. From what I have been reading, it seems that I am not the only one that has this feeling.

First, It has been one of my life’s passions to research my roots. I am also a first time user of FTM. However, All of my information is list on Ancestry.com.
I actually thought I was doing something wrong when attempting to import info from Ancestry to the FLM on my desktop until I read the comments from resp#20 Mr. Griffin and found that no one can. (or at the least, we both can’t) Pls Help!
Lastly, I have FLM 2008 Lite. If I decide to upgrade to the 2009 version, will there be a fee?

Looking forward to the webinar,
Cynthia

I have a book saved in FTW 2005 and in pdf. Will this import into FTW 2009

I would like to know if you are ever going to make it possible to integrate entries between the FTM and Ancestry? It is annoying having to repeat everything into the FTM.
Thanks

Is there a way to detach a family line from the current established tree and start a new tree with that family?

I have a problem with the gedcom files – they are completely unreadable can’t tell what children go with what parent and what the generation connections are. HELP!

I have an older version (16) which I bought at Amazon after reading several negative comments about newer versions. Have you read those comments and made appropriate changes? It’s been about a year since then, but here are some things I remember: 1) newer software (v. 2008) does not convert older versions smoothly. 2) It forces one to buy more services from you. (i.e. book) 3) several common reports were no longer available. 4) the software would often crash. 5) large files would slow the software to unuseable.

An enhancement I would like to see is: Being able to have a “form” that I can email to a relative; who could fill in the blanks, whom can send it back, and my software will load it and update my data.
Thanks

My list below may be partly just “learning curve” for this program. I worked with FTM version 2002 several years ago. I just started working again on my family “projects” and updated to FTM 2009. You have many new and good areas in the program and I have much to learn. Since you offered this Webinar , I am sending you my current list of “questions”.

1. Sometimes I do not want to “export” or “back-up” … I am sharing with another friend one of my trees. So, can you add an option under “file” = “ save as” .

2. My two children extend down from a line from my ex-hsb. Also shows I am still married to him too. I want my children to come from a line directly from me . Also I want a unequal sign =/= between me and my x-hsb . I do not know how to make hsb a “divorced hsb” . I put divorce date in FTM.

3. All in one… so glad you brought it back in the updated 2009 as the Extended Family Chart. Thanks !
Problems tho: I have many members who are listed several times… in their box it shows “molly 1” or “molly 2” . any suggestions ? It may be the way they are linked in a few different ways.
My grandfather on one side has a brother who married my grandmother’s sister. So my cousins are sort of ‘double cousins’. That may confuse the program. But there are other relatives who show up as “1” and then over a few spaces as “2” . in the Extended Family Chart.

I really appreciate your providing this webinar . Thank you in advance and “see ya” on Thursday 3/12/09

We are planning a big family reunion. I thought it would be wonderful to bring the family tree up to date and make the info available to those interested. However the manual suggest using the first name of “living” if the person is living. This kind of defeats the purpose, but I certainly do not want to violate anyone privacy. I just getting started and I think the manual said it was possible to enter peoples addresses. Is it also possible to print labels to mail reunion flyers etc? Unfortunatly I have another commitment and will not be able to attend the webinar. Will it be available to access afterwards?
Thank you,
Kathy

I have used FTM for several years starting with an earlier version. I don’t know the version I first used because I have upgraded to 2009 several months ago. I really liked the older version because it was so easy to enter names into it, and to page around. I am slowly getting used to 2009, but it wasn’t easy. I spent hours reading the tips and doing tutorials just to navigate it. I have a trans-gendered relative, and I don’t know how to enter a male turned female with old name and new name. I saw someone else had that question, and I do as well. I can’t change the paper size to legal so as to make the chart fit onto one page. I don’t know how to show other spouses on a chart. I really, really have a hard time with 2009 that I didn’t ever have before. I am getting better at it, but why you had to do that to your software is beyond me. A webinar is needed because of how you designed 2009. I have 1,000 names on my tree, and I don’t want to lose that!

I want to be able to publish my complete family on a chart but I have multiple family starting points and it is 15 generations. How can I accomplish this?

Does everything work on a 64 bit computer?

why use the ancestry 2009 software when ancestry.com offers its family tree web based software for no additional fee? Or, should we be using/updating these two tools at the same time?

I have version 16 installed on my computer and like it very much. i put 2009 on the lap top, do not like it. also do not like how the census sheets look with your new printing, impossible to read the hard copy now. So much of the new is now combined with the old that is is getting difficult to use and not a smooth transition at all. Not a real happy user now.

Yes

Don’t know the upgrade price as I don’t know where you live and it varies in different countries but check online with Ancestry.com

Yes so long as you have the Microsoft WSE 3.0 file

You can download it from MS if it is not on your computer.

The webinar says 8pm EST on the 12 March. Does this mean you observe daylight savings time or not since I’m hoping to join from the UK. I think it will be 12am and not 1am our time.

Cheers,
Gayle

Will this be offered again in the future? I can’t take advantage of it at that time. Thanks.

My question concerns printing family trees. Family Tree Maker does not allow me to print continuously; Every year for my family reunion, I print our family trees, which now consist of over 5,000 entries. When I first started doing this and using a different software package, I was able to create the tree, save it to a CD, take it to Kinkos and it would print the entire tree with no breaks. Now using Family Tree Maker, I print the trees, they come out in sections and then I spend days taping the sections together. Perhaps there are steps I am missing that will allow me to print a tree continuously. If I say print on one page vs. multiple pages, the trees print so small that they look like dots on a page. If there is someway to print continuously, it would make my life a whole lot better.

I have registered for the webinar, have downloaded Firefox and RealPlayer 11 for the Mac, am running Mac 10.5.6 and can’t get the Real player to work. It works fine until I run the webinar test. Then I get the following message …. Realplayer socket error. How do I get past this?

I cannot update my family tree website as it says the file is too large. How can I split the file without messing up the tree. Also it is slow to open the file because it is so large and that is without photos.

How can I add the complete book when its over 1 GB in size. As there are many photos and additional information that we want in the book?

And I cant get the complete book to download on the website as its is over 1 GB?

We have 2009, updated from 2008, updated from previous version.
Two questions:
1. Will the update correct a problem of relationships? On some family pages, where there is clearly a direct relationship, (grandparent, uncle, etc.) the designation is “no direct relationship.”
2. 2008 FTM: Place name file — When 2008 updated a previous FTM edition, phrases from various field were picked up and used as “place names.” The 2009 edition did not correct this. Will the new update to 2009 fix the problem? Example: Open “Places”; find such “places” as “Had 1 son,” “Known as Kate,” “Land boundaries.”

Why is installing the Family Tree Maker software (CD) on a new PC so difficult?
Must I keep my old PC to maintain all the ancestry records I have saved?

My daughter had a son out of wedlock. Then she maried. Stepdad had my daughters sons surname changed to his surname. He did not adopt my grandson. How do you enter my grandson into Family Tree Maker V16?

I started a family book way back using the 2005 version. Can I do that again now with the 2009 version, and can I recover the work previously done?

Warily I am concerned that my free 2004 FTM files on my PC with many new pictures attached, which for some months has not been able to be uploaded to the net, as it had until late 2008, will not be able to be merged into a new 2009 FTM program. What guarantee do I have that I can get a refund if I cannot, in fact, merge my old (current to me) files to a new 2009 FTM program?

It would be nice, if I could change the font color from black to other colors for identifying (in my case)
Revolutionary War Vets, Civil War vets, WW I, WW II, etc. I think this small addition would help all in personalizing their family trees according to their different interests.
Thanks for listening!

Like many others, I have trees in both Ancestry.com and FTM and as someone else already commented, doing the same work in 2 different places is cumbersome. Family members viewing the tree online is a big plus. I am looking for advice as to where to spend the most time working until there are further options for integration. Thanks,

My question for the WEBINAR 12Mar09 at 8PM EST: Is there a means of “remembering” repetitive data such as addresses when entering family data instead of re-entering the data for each family member?

This new 2009 program shouldn’t be so difficult to use. I’m signed up for the web seminar but don’t expect a lot out of it. I understand the need to make changes because of Vista but for those of us that just want a way to keep track of information and not publish but just make basic reports this is way over board. I was able to use the previous version without looking at the booklet. I’ve been using computers for 20 years. I can’t imagine people who are new to this what they must think.

It would be great if Ancestry came up with a more basic FTM program choice. After all most of us do this because we enjoy it. I would be willing to pay the same price.

I do have one issue with my current version 2005. How to include photos and articles that are in my scrapbook when creating a basic report.

Thank you!

I purchased the 2008 version and couldn’t use it. It was a disaster and I stayed with the 2005 version. Is the nnew 2009 version more like the 2005 version or 2008 version?

i received your latest e-mail referencing the new “extended family chart” in the link to the update pageon your web site. is the “extended family chart” enhancement in version 2009 similar or the same as the “all-in-one” chart from version 2006?

I would like to manage notes with the tools available in MSWord, and the ability to spell names and words with diacritic marks. Or, link notes to a Word.doc if space is not available within FamilyTree.

I watched the overview section of your website for the Family Tree Maker 2009. During which It stated you can copy information from an already existing family tree that we already have on the internet. Does that include a family tree on the website GenesReunited. I have been working on my family tree for 3 years on that site and have over 2000 people on it. It would be much to much work and too much trouble to reimput all that data otherwise. I am looking to have my family tree printed.

Hi – I sent a question a short time ago about merging information from Ancestry.com to FTM. Through my own work, I have discovered the merge feature during a Web search on FTM and am happy as a clam. Even though it will take some work, I was able to merge an entire family with information related records all at once. I am going to try and maintain work in both places. Look forward to the Webinar. Thanks,

I have registered for the webinar for March 12.
I have Family Tree Maker version 16 2006. I have my family book just about finished, I would like to change some of the fonts to color. Is there a way to do that with my version of Family tree? Also where is the best place to have my book printed?
thank you Paul

I currently have Roots Magic. Will I be able to transfer my information to Family Tree 2009?

I have to compact my files on a fairly regular basis when my computer slows or chokes, sometimes abruptly closing out of FTM09. I have about 6000 names and have found that adding media seems to make the choking/abrupt closure more frequent. What is causing this? Also, is FTM09 mainly for Vista? I’m still using XP.

In my humble opinion FTM v.16 was and is the best version you have come out with so far. I have been on the fence about going to FTM 2009. First convince me why I should. Second if you do convince me to try 2009 how hard is it to take my data from v. 16 to v. 2009 and is v. 2009 compatible with Windows XP without any installlation or usage issues ?

Back o my comments #529 and #530, you’ve replied:

In FTM 2009 SP1 the ability to export csv files in columns has solved this problem

John D

The ability to export as a single page PDF (as well as multiple pages) was added in FTM 2009 SP1

John D

However, I do have FTM2009 SP1 and I can’t create a one-page PDF and my exported file to CSV format does not have all the columns for all the records.

Am I missing something?

Where can we record the race of persons since there are so many interracial marriages now

1. Where do I find my back up file? On my previous version I had both a back up and a compact file saved under FTW.

2. When I go into the fact data options from “marriage fact”; then check-change selected facts to this fact type–I do not find “married by” as a choice. If I attempt the same choice from another fact, as residence, the choice of “married by” comes up. What I want is a shared “married by” fact and be able to convert those from the Marriage fact.
Thanks for your help, Sharon

What time is the Webinar GMT please – you do have Europeans who will be interested!

I too would like to solve the question posed in #50 by Joe.
“I would like very much to be able to determine the order of listed facts in an individual’s profile.”
At least I would like to be able to put them in order of occurence, without going into the “timeline.”

If I install FTM 2009 as an upgrade to FTM 2008, will I lose any data?
