Message to Family Tree Maker 2008 Owners

Posted by Russell Hannig on August 28, 2008 in Family Tree Maker

For our valued Family Tree Maker 2008 customers:

As we announced earlier, we’re giving our loyal Family Tree Maker 2008 customers a free upgrade to 2009. Last year around this time we released Family Tree Maker 2008. There was some initial customer dissatisfaction with the functionality in that release. We heard from customers who felt they didn’t receive what they were expecting. Over the past year, we’ve listened carefully to their feedback and have added many new features in the form of free patches which have been enthusiastically received. Family Tree Maker 2009 has even more features and functions that were not in previous patches. We listed some of these features in a previous post, along with additional features that will be part of Version 2009 when they become available.

In the next few weeks, Family Tree Maker 2008 registrants will receive an email with a one-time-use coupon that can be redeemed for a free version of Family Tree Maker 2009. You might have heard about a previous email that went to a portion of Family Tree Maker users. Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.

We want you to be completely satisfied and delighted with the product you have purchased. The family history work you do is important, and we want to support you the best we can.

Sincerely,

The Family Tree Maker Team

I did register but I haven’t got an email ?
I am located in Canada, is the release different for us?

2 LynnAugust 28, 2008 at 8:45 pm

I am also a registered user and have not received an email (I am in the US). How can this be resolved? I previously sent an email to FTM on this topic, but received no reply.

3 Les McFadzenAugust 28, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Same as Dave, but Australia?

4 RobinAugust 28, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Same, but New Zealand

5 Daryl RickardsAugust 28, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Same as Dave, Lynn, Les, Robin – I did not get any earlier email.

How can you check whether you are a registered user ?

I’m sure I did register, but is there a way to check on it?

7 RobinAugust 29, 2008 at 2:29 am

I did register. I received an email on 2 September 2007 from admin@ftm.com confirming registration and giving me a Username and password.

I haven’t received an email advising of the new release.

However, as my previous request, Is there a way to confirm registration with FTM?

8 John DonaldsonAugust 29, 2008 at 3:15 am

Dave, Lyn, Les, Robin etc please read what Russ has posted.

In the next few weeks you will receive an email…..

This email will provide you with the information

John,

We realize their is a pending communication/email; the issue for me is I never received the prior email Russ referenced above “As we announced in an email to you earlier, we’re giving our loyal Family Tree Maker 2008 customers a free upgrade to 2009.” This would lead me to believe that the distribution list for the prior email is what will be used for the “free 2009″ coupon (i.e., the concern/desire to be on the distribution list)

10 Martha BrewerAugust 29, 2008 at 5:02 am

So we FTM 2008 users are doubly messed with? We get a crappy product, and now we have to for weeks while others get FTM 2009 already? You suck.

11 John DonaldsonAugust 29, 2008 at 5:46 am

Lynn

I don’t know where you live but some USA registered users got a sort of early alert email but I understand that emails will be going out shortly with the details

For users in other countries (I live in AU), nothing has yet been sent but I understand soon.

12 John DonaldsonAugust 29, 2008 at 5:48 am

Martha I don’t think anyone has FTM 2009 as yet as whilst it is announced I don’t think it is released.

I don’t think you post accurately reflects the situation?

John D

13 John DonaldsonAugust 29, 2008 at 5:51 am

Robin if you have registered you can use the web search

14 Dale ChamberlainAugust 29, 2008 at 6:49 am

Okay, I am a register user of FTM 2008 (at least I’m pretty sure I am), and was a beta tester for FTM 2009—and I did not receive an email about the release of FTM 2009.

What gives?

Dale

15 Martha BrewerAugust 29, 2008 at 6:50 am

John D.
You sound like Amanuensis.
Are you another Ancestry.com sock puppet?

16 Gretar EinarssonAugust 29, 2008 at 8:11 am

Good to hear from you Russel, we where a bit worried.
Looking forward to receive my email. I am located in Europe. There should be a (perhaps it is in FTM2009) opportunity to see in “About” window that your copy of FTM is a registered one.

17 Russell HannigAugust 29, 2008 at 9:14 am

If you have registered Version 2008 and didn’t see our first email, you’ll probably still get the second email telling you how to get the free version. Here are some reasons why you may not have received the first email:

1) Your address is in a country other than the United States. Our first email went to the US. Our next email will go to customers around the world.
2) Your registration doesn’t show an address. Our next email will go to this group, too.
3) The first email got marked as spam and could be in your spam inbox (in this case go to your spam box and look for an email from Ancestry.com)

18 Charles A. GustafsonAugust 29, 2008 at 9:55 am

I hope this doesn’t mean that those of us who put up with 2008 from day one aren’t going to be waiting for two months down the road to get our copy of 2009 while someone else walks into a store tomorrow and buys it.

19 Les SullivanAugust 29, 2008 at 11:59 am

I look forward to my free “upgrade” which I consider to be well deserved and hopefully will restore some of the functionality of earlier versions, functions that were quite essential and yet taken away from us when 2008 came out.
New capability such as mapping an ancestors “route” may be nice but all in one trees and the ability to list by aka are much more important to me. Fingers crossed, and hopefully I shall get the appropriate email when it is sent out.
Yours patiently…..
Les

20 Glenwood RobinsonAugust 29, 2008 at 1:00 pm

I did resister 2008 and am a beta tester for 2009. I did not receive this email concerning a free upgrade to 2009. I live in Idaho.

21 Gretar EinarssonAugust 29, 2008 at 1:12 pm

Thank you Russel for clarify for us why e.g I did not get the first email, but I have registered my FTM 2008, I can not see any information about that registration when I go to both ancestry.com or ancestry.co.uk. I would assume that all products that you register are visible or perhaps I have been looking at a wrong page that is “My Account”.

22 Brad JohnsonAugust 29, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Thank you for thinking of your dedicated, if not sometimes frustrated, users by offering the coupon. I sure hope 2009 is better than 2008! Hey, if we really didn’t like your products you would never hear from us again.

23 RobinAugust 29, 2008 at 1:47 pm

Gretar has a point. It would be helpful if our copy of FTM showed “Registered” in the “about” window. Most programs where you have to register the program show this.

24 ArtAugust 29, 2008 at 2:47 pm

I like most have registered 2008 and am waiting for my email containing the 2009 upgrade.

I however must be old and slow thinking – which I am at times – but my issues with 2008 have been with stability of the platform and not some of the other items others are talking about. Oh well, I await my email.

25 JohnAugust 29, 2008 at 3:39 pm

I, too, registered (actually multiple times, just to make sure) and did not receive an email. I will be very surprised to receive an email for this new offer.

Why not just bypass the coupons and have 2009 install as an “update” to 2008? Sounds like a win-win for everyone — less hastle for TGN and great PR, plus the likelihood of many more loyal and happy customers!

26 Martha BrewerAugust 29, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Why are you screwing your FTM 2008 customers? Just give us the freaking update!

27 John DonaldsonAugust 29, 2008 at 4:34 pm

Martha

I have no idea of what you are talking about (you have an unique turn of phrase) but I do not work for Ancestry.com

All I am trying to do is clarify the situation that Russ H has officially clarified

John D

28 DaveAugust 29, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Thanks for the update Russell, I will eagerly await the “second emailing”!

29 Michelle MMAugust 30, 2008 at 1:19 am

i have also registered and not recieved an email i am based in the UK , I wait your free upgrade with anticipation in the hope that it will re establish the printing option for the whole tree. Please advise how to check if software is registered?

30 John DonaldsonAugust 30, 2008 at 2:31 am

Michelle

If you can do a web search in 2008 your software is registered

I believe that the emails for UK and AU users will come from the UK soon.

What do you mean by re-establish the printing options for the whole tree?

John D

31 Eileen Sullivan TormeyAugust 30, 2008 at 2:53 am

I, too, have registered my 2008 version and not received the update email offer,

How do we go about getting the coupon for the free upgrade!

32 Eileen GrossAugust 30, 2008 at 6:00 am

If you are unsure if you’ve registered your FTM 2008, register it again. On the tool bar in FTM Simply go to Help and Activate ancestry subscription.

I too, never received the email re: FTM 2009, I registered, I have no spam filter on my inbox. They are obviously having problems sending out this e-mail.

They have also taken about 6 months to answer my support question. Clearly they are overwhelmed.

They need to provide us with a mechinism for US to ASK THEM for the free upgrade, not WAIT for their e-mail, which may never arrive.

Good luck to all.
Eileen

33 Eileen GrossAugust 30, 2008 at 6:01 am

Woops, i meant to say the instructions to register are:

Help
Register Family Tree Maker

(my previous posting for for the 1 month free subscription for Ancestry)

Apologies to the group.

Eileen

34 Pat BlanchardAugust 30, 2008 at 6:35 am

I am also a registered user of FTM 2008 and have participated in the Beta tests. I received the first e-mail saying that I would receive instructions at a later date for installing the free copy of FTM 2009, but as yet have not received that second e-mail. Hopefully, the volume of folks to receive this e-mail is what is holding up the works. If I do not receive this e-mail within the next few days, what should I do to get the download?

35 Janice HeidtAugust 30, 2008 at 8:51 am

I am also a registered user and have not received an email (I am in Texas). Is it possible that we have not received the first email because we aren’t signed up for regular emails from Ancestry.com? I subscribe to Ancestry but haven’t been receiving regular emails for months.

36 David RussellAugust 30, 2008 at 12:11 pm

free upgrade, I did register but I haven’t got an email ?

Hallo FTM team.
I am living in the Netherlands and did get your FTM 2008 service pack 2 and 3.
Why not supplying all 2008 users an servicepack 2008-2009 ????
You already do have my email adres so must be an easy job !!!!!!!

42 Lewis FarrellSeptember 2, 2008 at 12:27 pm

43 Sherry MarshallSeptember 2, 2008 at 1:04 pm

I live in Michigan, USA and have not gotten my 1st email, plus the help they tried to give me didn’t work for 2008. I really hope that the 2009 is better.

44 Tony CousinsSeptember 2, 2008 at 1:47 pm

I too registered 2008 but haven’t received an e-mail. I’m just wondering if it may have something to do with the account e-mail preferences.
The only one I have checked is the ‘NOW on Ancestry’ for new additions to records.
Maybe Russell can check on that one.

You might have heard about a previous email that went to a portion of Family Tree Maker users. Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.

46 William WallsSeptember 3, 2008 at 4:08 pm

I have not gotten any emails with regard to the 2009 upgrade. I had just purchased 2008 when today I was told on the phone by Ancestry tech support a free upgrade is being given. I would say after using 2008 the upgrade would be welcomed as my version 9 seems to be superior in functions.

Respectfully,
William Walls

47 James WeirSeptember 3, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I am in Australia, I am registered, having purchased Family Tree Maker 2008.
I have not received an email to obtain the free update for 2009.
What do I do to get the update to 2009.

Thank you ……… Jim Weir.

48 GarySeptember 3, 2008 at 10:19 pm

If I buy the 2008 version now and register within teh next couple of weeks, do I get the upgrade to 2009 for free?

49 John DonaldsonSeptember 4, 2008 at 2:50 am

James and other Australian registered users please be a bit more patient.

The emails to Australian users have not been sent as yet.

When they do I will post to this list

John D

50 MaxSeptember 4, 2008 at 6:43 am

Does FTM 2008 have to work to get the 2009 version to work, or is it a stand-alone version? My registered version of 2008 is useless and simply stops working. In frustration I uninstalled it to get that junk off of my computer, and I feel much better about it now. If the 2009 version requires 2008 to be functional to work, don’t bother.

51 bromaelorSeptember 4, 2008 at 10:20 am

So FREE actually means £2.95 postage!!! Why can’t I just download it!

52 James RobertsonSeptember 4, 2008 at 10:39 am

I was a Beta Tester and have not receive any email other than one in early August saying that later a free 2009 will be available.

Did you leave out the testers?

53 Judy WrightSeptember 4, 2008 at 1:29 pm

Thank you for listening to subscribers about the difficulties we were experiencing and making good on the price we paid for version 2008 software. I know of NO other company who has responded in this same manner.

I am looking forward to the email with the new version 2009.

54 Diane McElwainSeptember 4, 2008 at 3:17 pm

I downloaded the Family Tree Maker 2008 lite from Ancestry.com which merged with my original Family Tree Maker. Will I get a free download?

55 Eileen SouzaSeptember 4, 2008 at 5:04 pm

I have not received an email yet but I have also not seen t his version actually available for sale anywhere except Amazon but they are quoting 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. I’m guessing it is not really ready yet.

56 RobinSeptember 4, 2008 at 5:26 pm

In DearMyrtle’s Podcast it was stated that FTM 2009 would be available on September 3 for download, but the retail version would not appear until mid to end September.

So Amazon would be correct in saying 4 to 6 weeks.

However, for us, September 3 has already passed. Where is FTM 2009?

57 vernon brewerSeptember 4, 2008 at 6:40 pm

I,m excited about the 2009 release.

2008 was such a disapointment, when will the update emails go out?

58 BillSeptember 4, 2008 at 11:56 pm

I’m another “registered” FTM 2008 user in Australia that hasn’t received *any* emails of *any* sort about FTM 2009!

*Not happy*!

59 RobinSeptember 5, 2008 at 1:02 am

I see that the new version has now been released.

Go to http://www.familytreemaker.com and then store.

New full version available and the upgrade.

When do we get our email for the upgrade?

60 RobinSeptember 5, 2008 at 1:12 am

If you go to http://www.familytreemaker.com and can’t find FTM 2009 (FTM 2008 may be still on the home page) have a good search around the site for “other products”. It’s there alright.

61 John DonaldsonSeptember 5, 2008 at 3:59 am

Bill be patient they are about to be sent soon

62 John DonaldsonSeptember 5, 2008 at 4:00 am

But soon

I don’t think Dear Myrtle said anything about a downloadable version?

As I understand it, the program (in various retail and other packs depending on markets) will all be CD based

64 John DonaldsonSeptember 5, 2008 at 4:04 am

Good one Eileen

got the email today, and learned that I am not eligible for the upgrade as I am not from the UK, Australia or New Zealand (I’m located in the Republic of Ireland). May I ask WHY Ireland has been excluded?????

It is clear that these emails are being sent out to different countries at different dates and from different Acom centres around the world.

It would be quite a job to roll them all out so I guess that the roll out is being staged over several days?

John D

73 Martha BrewerSeptember 5, 2008 at 3:21 pm

still no email. STILL NOT!!
Is this promise fake? Another happy ancestry.com press release while you mess with your customers?

74 LynnSeptember 5, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Russell,

Thank you for letting us know that you will make sure current 2008 users we receive the free upgrade to 2009, even if we do not receive the prior email.

Can you let us know when Ancestry will be sending the “coupon.” Many of us were hoping that simulations with the release of the 2009, on September 3 at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Convention in Philadelphia, that we could receive this coupon/way to access the new version that would address many of our prior challenges with 2008.

An update on timing, or the email, would be appreciated and appropriate.

75 James PolznerSeptember 6, 2008 at 5:11 am

I have been a loyal FTM customer since 1996. I have LOVED every version UNTIL FTM 2008. I’ve tried working with it several times. There is not the ease, the visual aesthetics the intuitiveness in FTM 2008 that there is in all the previous versions. I realize this is my opinion and it is just an opinion. If others like it and use it, I think that is great!!! I would like to ask if anyone knows how I can return to a previous version of FTM. The last version I used was FTM Version 16. Problem is, after having used FTM 2008, I can’t go back to a previous version. When I try and open the file in a previous version, it says that I can’t do it. Please, can someone just tell me how I can revert to a previous version before FTM 2008? Thank you…..

76 LIsaSeptember 6, 2008 at 6:14 am

I too have not received an email and I live in the UK and I am a registered user, but I have no faith, I have the boxes ticked to receive the newsletters etc bit I never recieve them let alone get an email for a free upgrade. I will await and see, but so far it sounds like most people are disappointed yet again. Why not just upgrade via an update? Why is Russell so quiet in answereing everyone’s question, he just keep pasting the same answer and ‘probably’ what does not mean, it is not good enough!

77 bromaelorSeptember 6, 2008 at 7:20 am

My email from Ancestry UK arrived on 4th Sep and contained an ‘activation number’ for use on the Ancestry Shop site. A credit card is needed to pay the £2.95 postage, and the CDs are due to arrive in 2 to 6 weeks!!!
A telephone number is given for queries, 0870 850 8752, so perhaps that might be useful for those who have still not been contacted?

78 TonyCSeptember 6, 2008 at 7:50 am

bromaelor #75

You’re one of the luckier ones. I bought my copy of FTM2008 back in July 2007 – I still have a copy of the order confirmation, and I checked that the e-mail I used is still valid – I haven’t seen anything from TGN / Ancestry about a free upgrade – and I live in the USA!!!

TonyC

79 TonyCSeptember 6, 2008 at 7:53 am

I just tried calling the number on the order confirmation – “Telephone Customer Service: 1-800-262-3787.

If you are calling from outside the United States, please dial 1-801-705-7620.

Representatives are available weekdays from 7am to 9pm MST and Saturday from 8am to 5pm MST, closed Sunday.”

Guess what, they’re closed and its a Saturday – 8:53 AM MST.

That is real customer service.

TonyC

80 BobSeptember 6, 2008 at 7:53 am

James Polzner, have you tried makibg a GEDCOM file with FTM 2008 which you should be able to open in version 16? You won’t be able to transfer graphics, etc., but all your text should be included.

81 TonyCSeptember 6, 2008 at 8:26 am

Re previous about Saturday support – I guess thats a problem keepng old e-mails, the new hours of “support” are clearly listed as Monday through Friday :(

But isn’t that when most of us research our trees, during the working week – I bet nobody researches at the weekend.

I guess that TGN needed to stop Saturday support so they could fund the aggressive marketing push – their ads for Ancestry are everywhere.

TonyC

82 ChristopherSeptember 6, 2008 at 9:53 am

Are “bromaelor” and “Elaine” (http://www.familytreeforum.com/family-tree-software-hints-tips/51000-family-tree-maker-2009-free-update.html) the only people in the UK to have received the email regarding a free upgrade to FTM 2009? I’m touched by the way registered FTM 2008 users still have have to pay £2.95 for the “free” upgrade, and order by 26 September to qualify – that really does rub salt into the wound!!

As yet there are no reviews of the product, so I’m assuming no one at all has received a copy yet. I wonder why?

Hmm…despite “Robin” saying that FTM 2009 is available at http://www.familytreemaker.com do I get a message saying “Sorry, your search – Family Tree Maker 2009 – did not match any products”? The same applied for a search for just 2009!

It seems that Ancestry/TGN itself hasn’t even heard of FTM 2009!!

Maybe we’ve all imagined it…

83 RobinSeptember 6, 2008 at 1:23 pm

Christopher

Yes, it is there. I had a problem trying to find it, and the only way for me to return to it is by a bookmark.

Have a good look around the site. You’ll find it eventually. They’ve almost hidden it. Why they didn’t display it on their home page, I’ll never know.

84 LynnSeptember 6, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Christopher and Robin,

The link on the US website is: http://store.ancestry.com/index.aspx?p=MFSKU4637&cj=1&sid=blog&o_xid=0002370517&o_lid=0002370517&AID=10464016&AFFSITEID=2370517&ADD=09%252f06%252f2008%2b16%253a07%253a12&AMISC=blog&ATYPE=6

You can not find this page via a search on Ancestry, so they are probably waiting until next week to publicly feature this on the website, ideally to coincide with the release the “coupon” to 2008 owners in the US (i.e., if you try to process the order, there is a place to input a “coupon code”)

Fingers crossed for an email and coupon on Monday as well as long awaited enhancements!

85 RobinSeptember 6, 2008 at 3:32 pm

Thanks Lynn

86 ChristopherSeptember 6, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Thank you, Robin and Lynn.

The link you provided worked – well done on finding it!

Here is the the forum I mentioned earlier, as a proper link: http://www.familytreeforum.com/family-tree-software-hints-tips/51000-family-tree-maker-2009-free-update.html

Cheers.

87 CarolSeptember 6, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Just an FYI – amazon.com has updated it’s FTM 2009 Essentials page to say that it will now be released on Sept. 21, 2008. Maybe the rest of us will get the “free” info via email before then! :)

88 gwilanneSeptember 6, 2008 at 4:25 pm

I am in canada and have registered several times to make sure as well but have not received the email either.

89 Heather MartinSeptember 7, 2008 at 11:33 am

Im yet another who pre ordered the 2008 and then bunged it back in the drawer because of all the problems I had with it. I returned to my FT2006V16.

What I cant understand is others who have not bought or registered the FT2008 have received these emails with the offer!

I am still waiting

A loyal 6 years customer.

90 Jay JethwaSeptember 7, 2008 at 12:15 pm

Hi – I purchased FTM2008 in the first few weeks of release but still not received an email for the free upgrade. When will it be sent to the UK?

Thanks, Jay

91 David F. KleinSeptember 8, 2008 at 9:08 am

I have not received the email coupon for the 2009 upgrade. Also I do hope that the monthly calendar feature will be restored. I cannot understand why it would be dropped?

92 RobinSeptember 8, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Is it possible for Russ to come back to us and let us know when we may receive the coupon?

There has been no recent update to us to let us know what is going on.

The new version is “hidden” in the FTM website, and we are all in the dark as to what is happening.

It would be nice for Russ to come out and let us know when we may receive the email with the coupon.

Come on, Russ, give us an update.

93 Martha BrewerSeptember 8, 2008 at 1:11 pm

“My email from Ancestry UK arrived on 4th Sep and contained an ‘activation number’ for use on the Ancestry Shop site. A credit card is needed to pay the £2.95 postage, and the CDs are due to arrive in 2 to 6 weeks!!!”

94 Jan GowSeptember 8, 2008 at 1:55 pm

could someone please tell me if the US 2008 users have an expiry date on on their free upgrade offer?

95 RobinSeptember 8, 2008 at 1:56 pm

I noticed at the introduction of this blog, Russ says “For our valued Family Tree Maker 2008 customers” and ending says “we want to support you the best we can”.

If this is correct, please Russ, can we have your comment on the email and coupon.

96 Deborah HarrisonSeptember 8, 2008 at 7:06 pm

I did get the first email, I live in the U.S., I’ve seen FTM 2009 advertised in the Ancestry.com store and on Amazon, and I haven’t received my coupon.

97 RobinSeptember 8, 2008 at 7:39 pm

I really don’t think that anyone from Ancestry is looking at any of our comments, otherwise surely someone would have commented.

Ancestry, are you there???

98 BillSeptember 9, 2008 at 2:57 am

> Bill be patient they are about to be sent soon

Its now several days later and still no email abour FTM 2009!

99 June ApplegateSeptember 9, 2008 at 1:14 pm

102 JackieSeptember 9, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I have also registered my 2008 Family Tree Maker, but as of 9:00 today, Tuesday, September 9, I have not received an email.

Thanks for your help.

103 Richard RossSeptember 9, 2008 at 7:19 pm

It would appear their servers can not handle all the traffic attempting to download the free update of FTM 2009. Guess I will have to try back early in the morning to see if the problem has been resolved. To add, the link that is supposed to take you to the software download does indeed display an error page and trying to get to the store at Ancestry also does the same thing, at least for me it did.

104 Terry TriplettSeptember 9, 2008 at 7:37 pm

That’s all well and good but I got my e-mail with the code to down load 2009 and guess what, the link doesn’t work. I like many others do not like FTM 2008 and all I can say is I am glad I didn’t delete my old 2006 version of FTM

105 ShannonSeptember 9, 2008 at 8:37 pm

You guys are getting the option to download the upgrade? My only option seems to be having the disc shipped.

106 Terr RuckerSeptember 9, 2008 at 8:54 pm

I received an email at 7:30 tonight that I could get the free 2009 update. At 9:00 until 11:45 I attempted to click on the provided link to obtain the software. I finally was rewarded with a message that read “due to popular demand, I could not receive the offer at this time. Check back later.” When is later???? I am very disappointed that FTM did not fulfill their offer.

107 William L DeCourseySeptember 9, 2008 at 10:12 pm

I am a registered owner of FTM 2008 which I purchased about 6 months ago on disk. I received a message that I could obtain a 2009 update to take care of problems and flaws with the 2008 version. The URL for the message that I receive fails to work. I would like to have the free copy of FTM 2009 set to me on disk to William L. DeCoursey, 1735 19th Terrace NW, New Brighton, MN 55112. – My phone number is 651-633-5759. Thank you.

108 Tony ASeptember 10, 2008 at 5:08 am

I too have wasted way too much of my time clicking on a link, only to be rewarded with “Due to the high popularity of our FTM 2009 free upgrade offer, we are unable to fulfill your order at this time. Please check back later.Thank you, The Generations Network, Inc.” Another example of a your mouth writing checks your backside can’t deliver. IMHO

109 Bonnie TomsSeptember 10, 2008 at 9:11 am

I have not yet received my email for FTM2009 free update..I do have FTM 2008.

110 Janice E. McCourySeptember 10, 2008 at 12:53 pm

I just last week bought FTM 2008 at Best Buy, I didn’t know that there was a 2009. I registered it but didn’t receive an email about the free upgrade = Do I qualify?

Thanks,
Janice

111 KathieSeptember 10, 2008 at 4:53 pm

I am getting e-mails for free upgrade.

My 2008 NEVER worked on my XP PC – can not even open it to fix.

I now have a new PC with Vista 64 bit and I heard that the new FTM 2009 will not work on Vista 64 bit.

112 KathieSeptember 10, 2008 at 5:14 pm

They are trying to solve the problems with the free upgrade.

It seems all new PC are sold with Vista – more and more with Vista 64 bit.

See below – I will order anyway. Note they are sending CD – you will not be able to download.

Dear Kathleen,

We appreciate your message.

The problem with the free FTM 2009 upgrade page is being addressed by our developers and should be corrected shortly. The upgrade is not for a download, but the coupon gives you the purchase price of the program off of an order for the new version, so it will be sent on a CD.

Regarding your new computer, unfortunately we do not support 64-bit Operating Systems at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

There have been reports that the program will run on 64-bit, but problems are many and since it’s unsupported, our support staff cannot help with any problems that may arise. For this reason we do not recommend purchasing FTM if you run a 64-bit system.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

113 ShannonSeptember 11, 2008 at 7:30 am

Are you kidding me? So basically anyone who’s bought a computer in the last year is going to have problems with the program? What a freaking mess.

114 Callum StuartSeptember 11, 2008 at 1:24 pm

This, regrettably, seems to exude the aura of “TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE. As an orgiginal user of Banner Blue FTM the software has made some commendable vchanges over the years. the FTM2008 was an object lesson in regression. Deleting many facilities which have become “standard” in geneological software over the years. New users may be awed by the gloss, but I am convinced that you have now alienated a large part of your previously loyal customer base with the “cut-down” features of 2008. Perhaps with FTM 2009 you are hoping toredress the balance. Time, and your balance sheets, will tell. I will not be investing further in this product.

115 Tony FisherSeptember 11, 2008 at 3:30 pm

I have not yet received an e-mail regarding the free upgrade from FTM2008 to FTM2009. Can someone please arrange for this e-amil to be sent my way?

Many thanks.

116 JoanneSeptember 11, 2008 at 3:35 pm

I have a question. I am only just wanting to purchase FTM. I can only find 2008 (and after reading all this, I don’t know if I want it). If I buy 2008, am I going to get the 2009 upgrade free since 2008 is the only version available “down under” at the moment?

117 Alan SpencerSeptember 11, 2008 at 7:39 pm

I have not yet received an e-mail regarding the free upgrade from FTM2008 to FTM2009. Can someone please arrange for this e-amil to be sent my way also

Many thanks.

118 Barbara BlissettSeptember 11, 2008 at 10:13 pm

I have registered but have not got an email. I am in australia.
would appreciated a reply

119 MargaretSeptember 11, 2008 at 10:57 pm

Same story for me – I am in Australia and a registered user (although you wouldn’t know it as the program does not indicate a. if is a registered copy & b. who it is registered to, in the “About FTM” screen under the Help menu – there’s a tip for you FTM team!)and I haven’t received an email that supposedly went out last week, according to the Gould Genealogy newsletter that comes from South Australia. I enclose the relevant section below, in Quotes:

“Free FTM 2009 now available to FTM 2008 Users – for a limited time
Ancestry.com has sent the email so that Family Tree Maker 2008 users who registered a US or Canadian version of the software can get a free copy of FTM 2009. The email contains a unique link and coupon code to be used during checkout at the Ancestry.com store to get the free Family Tree Maker 2009. The free Family Tree Maker 2009 CD will come to your mailbox – it is not a download.

If you registered a US or Canadian 2008 version of Family Tree Maker and didn’t receive the email, Ancestry.com suggests that you let them know at the Ancestry.com blog in a comment.

If you are in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and didn’t receive your email last week, please let them know.”

There you have it FTM team, I didn’t get any notification from you and please consider this my official “letting you know” notice.

A further bit of feedback: The distribution of this update has been appallingly badly handled.

120 Carolyn De BonaSeptember 11, 2008 at 11:29 pm

Hi,

When are we supposed to get the offer, I bought FTM 2008 last year and haven’t received an email saying I get the upgrade. I definately registered, because it took forever, I ended lodging a request with the help staff.

Thanks

Carolyn (Australia)

121 AnnetteSeptember 12, 2008 at 12:39 am

Same story as Margaret. I am in Australia and registered user of FTM 2008.

I did not get any emails from Ancestry/ The Generations Network and only found out by the Gould Genealogy newsletter.

Same story as everyone else. I am in the UK and a registered user of FTM 2008. Just in case I re-registered last month.

I have yet to receive any emails from Ancestry.

Regards Nick (UK)

123 Nancy OffieldSeptember 12, 2008 at 10:18 am

I am also waiting for the email from Ancestry offering the free upgrade from 2008 to 2009.I bought 2008 when it was first offered to the public from Ancestry.com., and registered the product with them. I use the web search frequently, so I do know I am registered.

I wrote to the customer help address nearly a month ago, and was given the generic answer that they had just began sending out the free upgrade emails. I then called Ancestry as the answer in the email surely didn’t answer my question of concern about whether or not I would get the free upgrade. I’m still waiting for that email.

124 Beverly HolsoppleSeptember 12, 2008 at 10:41 am

Still also waiting for an email for my upgrade to 2009 … it is now 9/12/2008. Reviewed the list of changes and I am not optomistic … still see no indication that indexing of reports has been added BACK into the program (was there in FTM 16). Would have loved to have been involved in beta testing … how does one get included? I did make a request, but did not get a reponse. As a former software instructor and tech writer of instructional materials would love to have some input!

125 Tony ASeptember 12, 2008 at 11:35 am

Got my email on the new link, clicked on it, was done in about two minutes and even free shipping for “NON EXPEDITED” shipping. Painless transaction.

126 Cees RosekransSeptember 12, 2008 at 3:00 pm

I am registerd using FTM since Version 3. Bought always the updates.
Why does the Netherlands did not receive an e-mail for the update.
TWR Computing in the UK informed me
about this.
Have not receive any info for a new release either.

127 Kenneth CrowsonSeptember 12, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I would think you would have a better system to provide this upgrade to you customers. Your first try resulted in a overloaded website and shut down. Your second attempt has the same problem. You would better serve your customers by sending out a DVD/CD upgrade.

128 gwilanneSeptember 12, 2008 at 4:29 pm

Received my email today but when I tried the link I got a time out error several times then I got a store down error. The email only gives until Oct 15 to redeem.

129 gwilanneSeptember 12, 2008 at 5:34 pm

So I tried again and was able to get into the store- it first told me that there was 129 minutes to wait and 1355 people waiting. I actually only waited less than 5 mins and it came up for shopping- I entered my code and then signed in to my ancestry account and my free upgrade was processed and I was not charged shipping. I received an email confirmation about 7 mins later. I live in Canada. Process was pretty quick and once I got in simple

130 BillSeptember 12, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Still no email advice to FTM 2009 for me here in Oz!

The news about lack of Vista x64 support is ***EXTREMELY*** disturbing…. Vista x64 has been in commercial release for almost a year and three quarters now. I’ve had to keep one older laptop running Windows XP x86 just to support FTM properly and my with patience in doing that has just about run out (Vista x64 is SO much more stable than XP x86)!!!!!

135 Bernie MorrisonSeptember 13, 2008 at 10:31 am

I got the message. It was impossible to access the site. When I finally did it kicked mo out. I did not get anything.

136 Sandra PaikSeptember 13, 2008 at 2:23 pm

I just purchased the 2008 version last week. I’ve been unable to go online with it or register. Now I just found this article. I guess my question is why are you still selling Family Tree Maker 2008 if there are so many known problems with it? What are my options since I couldn’t even get it to register for me?

137 Allice ReynoldsSeptember 13, 2008 at 4:21 pm

I hate FTM 2008! I have downloaded the update patch, uninstalled, re-installed and still cannot register my product or use the web search feature. Don’t you think you should get 2008 working before moving on to 2009?

138 Kathryn BouldenSeptember 13, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I have not received an email about Family Tree Maker 2009 to replace free my FTM 2008. How to I get the coupon? Thanks!

139 Barry O'DonnellSeptember 14, 2008 at 10:07 pm

I look forward to receiving my email and updated copy, however how can I check that I have registered? I am sure that I registered as I have for each of the previous versions but would like to check. Can I do this?
Barry O’Donnell, Australia.

The FTM 2009 UK upgrade disk arrived his morning!!!

141 AnnetteSeptember 15, 2008 at 4:30 am

I recieved the first notice on Sept 9th I beleive it was on the 10th when I opened my email and clicked on it I was unable to download the update server was over whelmed. Awaiting the 2nd email with the new directions and pass and have not heard from Ancestry yet…

142 ann piperSeptember 15, 2008 at 10:01 pm

I live in Australia – still haven’t received an email about FTM 2009.

When can I expect it. Will you extend the deadline for ordering for those of us who haven’t been contacted yet?

143 OliverSeptember 15, 2008 at 10:29 pm

I received the 2nd email today but no download link – it proceeded to checkout (coupon code = $0) and finished on a ‘invoice – print for your records’ but no download link?, does this mean I’ll get a CD in the post?, or did something go wrong?

144 Terry IngramSeptember 16, 2008 at 6:01 am

I also have registered FTM 2008 at least twice and have yet to receive an email or coupon to order. Myself and my brother-in-law regularly exchange information and files and he has already received his coupon and ordered his when I haven’t even received my FIRST email. With the technology available today, it would seem that even an initial email saying you acknowledge my registration would be appropriate. I realize that duplicating CD’s takes a little time, but a posted schedule of some sort would alleviate some questions for some of us. Please understand that some of us long-term FTM users are committed to your product, but lack of SPECIFIC communication does not promote faith that you can manage the technology. I might say that I am a retired 40 year employee of THE major IT corporation and this is NOT the way to leave customers dangling.

145 Barbara J. YeomanSeptember 16, 2008 at 6:43 am

I have not received any email with a free upgrade offer to FTM 2009.
I am a registered user of FTM 2008.

I have had many versions and never had a problem receiving offers.

I do want to upgrade to FTM 2009 but do not see where I can register for the free upgrade.

Thanks,
Barb Yeoman

146 Frank BobakSeptember 16, 2008 at 9:33 am

I just purchased and received FTM 2008 and there was no mention of 2009 when I purchased 2008. Will I still be eligible for the free upgrade?

147 Jan GowSeptember 16, 2008 at 12:15 pm

This is a message for New Zealand FTM 2008 users, especially those who purchased their copy from Beehive Books. You may have received an email re your free upgrade to FTM 2009. It does say you have to live in UK or Australia to take up the offer. Please ignore this – it does cover NZ residents! It also says that you have until 26 Sep to take up this offer. As US users now have until 15 Oct to take up their offer, I am sure that this date will apply to us too.
If you have not received your email, and you are lucky enough to be reading this, then here is information to help you. Please let any other FTM 2008 users you know this information too.
“It appears that quite a high proportion of AUS [and NZ] users opted-out of emails so we can not send them the email. Customers can call the call centre:
Australia 1-800-251-838 Monday – Saturday 9:00 am – 16:00 pm AEST

New Zealand
0800 442 100 Monday – Saturday 9:00 am – 16:00 pm AEST

The agent will direct them to http://www.ancestryshop.co.uk/freeupgrade and give them a unique code to enable them to order the upgrade disc. Please note there is a small charge of £2.95 that will cover P&P.

Let’s know if this works!!
Jan

148 OliverSeptember 16, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Further to # 143 above:

I got an order confirmation today (~24hrs after processing) so assume I am being shipped a CD… cool…

149 DaneSeptember 16, 2008 at 6:36 pm

I have used FTM from the original version. I have just received FTM2008 and based on the comments seen on this site I will not install it..period. FTM V16 has features that 2008 has eliminated…sorry I will eliminate upgrades to newer FTM “enhancements” from further consideration.

what a bunch of crap….suggest all yall considering FTM 2008 to look elsewhere..vote with your pocketbook evidently thats all they understand.

Have just heard about the 2009 version being offered. I have received no email despite being registered. I am in Australia and hope we are next on the list for an email with good news?

153 Maria MisenerSeptember 17, 2008 at 1:03 pm

I have not recieved an email to upgrade my 2008, that I just recieved 3 weeks ago

154 Chuck DeweySeptember 17, 2008 at 1:56 pm

It would be nice if you also offered a free upgrade to version 16 users such as myself who did some homework and opted not to go the abomination known as FTM 2008. Yet we still stayed with FTM.
Even now my switch to 2009 will be predicated on whether or not I hear positive feedback on what is being touted as a new and much needed improvement to the merge feature.

155 John DonaldsonSeptember 18, 2008 at 4:01 am

Anne # 152

This advice may assist?

Here is information for those in Australia and New Zealand who did not receive a free upgrade email. This information comes from their International Office:

A high proportion of AUS and NZ users opted-out of emails so we can not send them the free upgrade email. Customers can call the call centre:

Australia
1-800-251-838 Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 16:00 pm AEST

New Zealand
0800 442 100 Monday – Friday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm NZT

The agent will direct them to http://www.ancestryshop.co.uk/freeupgrade and give them a unique code to enable them to order the upgrade disc. Please note there is a small charge of £2.95 that will cover P&P.

Here are instructions for updating your email preferences:

http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1073

What that means is if you registered your FTM 2008 but ticked the box to say “don’t send me any information” Ancestry.com will respect what you ticked and won’t send you the email with instructions for updating. Fair enough as that is what you told them to do

So if you haven’t received an email and have registered FTM 2008 then ring the toll free number and they will sort it on the phone

I understand that the offer closes around 26 September.

Good news – I order the free cd upgrade to FTM 2009 on 9-13-2008 and today, 9-18-2008, it arrived. I think that is fast for something free.

I have not tried it yet – little gun shy. Never could get FTM 2008 to work on my XP PC. I use another product as my main genealogy software.

I have a VISTA 64 bit laptop. Was told by Ancestry 64 bit is not suppoeted. My husband has a Vista 32 bit PC – will try it there this week-end.

How do we get the free upgrade if we have missed the e-mail?

I have FTM2008 Australian version that I bought from Gould Genealogy in South Australia and have been given the code “FTM0CCRXHT” to order the free upgrade; how do I go about obtaining this upgrade? Am I in the right area for this upgrade?

171 AnnetteSeptember 21, 2008 at 2:09 am

I have not opted-out of emails from Ancestry and I have just checked on my Ancestry account that all my contact details are there correctly and I still did not receive the email.

Well I’ve not got my free upgrade offer, and I’ve been using FTM for many years, always getting the latest version, would be nice to get a free upgrade but it appears this offer is not forth coming. Who do I phone?

173 LorraineSeptember 21, 2008 at 5:33 pm

So if I just wait a little bit longer, I will be sent an email to confirm my free FTM update to 2009? When I reply to that email with the code I was given, all should be fine. I can do that. So log as there is nothing else I should be doing in the mean time.Is this correct?

176 Mark SmithSeptember 22, 2008 at 11:59 am

I bought the 2008 version of the programme and eventually deleted it because it would not load, kept saying windows looking for a soloution, just loaded the new 2009 version same problem! What is the fix I like the programme but this is damn annoying.
Thanks

Yet another FTM 2008 user here who has still not received the email to upgrade… nothing in the spam box, either.

Is there some sort of schedule for this upgrade email that is supposed to be sent out?

178 Callum StuartSeptember 23, 2008 at 10:43 am

At last- an email from Genealogy.com!
(must be registered then). Special Offer on FTM 2009 . Yes, after weeks of waiting…YES, YES….NOOOOOOOO! “Special Offer” DO I WANT TO BUY IT @ 39.95 with free shipping. Answer – NO. I would like an e-mail detailing the 2009 upgrade which to some extent rectifies the deficiencies of FTM 2008. It would be quite nice to have this before the 15th October cut-off point. I really wish you would get your “roll-out” strategy sorted. Please don’t ask me to fill out a customer satisfation survey… please, please don’t.

I’m a registered user of 2008 – and a looonnnnggg time FTM user who still hasn’t received an upgrade email. I checked my “safe” email addresses and have ancestry as a safe address 4 different ways. What do I have to do to receive this update ???

HELP !!!

180 OrerockonSeptember 23, 2008 at 12:16 pm

Have any of you complainers actually tried to call Ancestry support? I called the 800 number on the customer support tab in my ancestry account and was told that the next email will be sent the first week of October, and that if I didn’t receive the email to call after that and I will be sent the upgrade code.

Could you please advise.

183 David KeelSeptember 24, 2008 at 12:03 am

I have not received any communication regarding this free upgrade. What I have received is an invitation to purchase FTM 2009. Is it your intention to sell as many copies as possible before offering the free upgrade? All I’ve had from FTM 2008 is aggravation and frustration, so much so that it makes family research a real effort and not enjoyable. I hope that this free upgrade will improve the situation because I will not buy it after the experience of 2008.

184 Carl HasselgrenSeptember 24, 2008 at 7:06 pm

I’m in Australia and have received no e-mail offering a free upgrade, only one offering it at a price. How can I find out if I’m on the mailing list for the upgrade as I understand that it will only be offered for a short time?

185 Sharon JackmanSeptember 25, 2008 at 2:58 am

For all Australians who need to upgrade from the 2008 to 2009 edition of Family Tree Maker see the following message on this page —

I live in Australia, called the number, was given the voucher number, registered it as per the message and on payment of £2.95 will receive the upgrade disks in the mail.

I think this as close to a free upgrade as I will get.

Give it a go.

I have a registered copy of FTM 2008 but I have not received an email for a free upgrade to 2009. I live in the UK.

187 Callum StuartSeptember 25, 2008 at 10:44 am

OREROCKON. There is a world outside the boundaries of the USA where 800 numbers are charged at international rates. Many of the “complainers” are UK, NZ, Australia. Existing customers are only asking that they are informed about, and assured that they are elegible for, an “update”. Receiving an offer to purchase at full price suggests that you are on the customer database. I now know about the “second round of emails” scheduled for October. I have been sent a response which stated that “We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 72 hours”. 72 hours? ,and what side of October might that be? Come on people, use some common sense instead of “sometime, maybe, never”. As you state yourself – IF you don’t get the e-mail… IF, IF, IF…

188 DonnaSeptember 25, 2008 at 5:31 pm

I have a registered copy of Family Tree Maker 2008 and have not received the email with the code for the 2009 upgrade.

189 Karen AdamsSeptember 26, 2008 at 4:16 am

As per the posting for a free upgrade from 2008 to 2009 (I have pasted the posting at the bottom of this e-mail).

I have been a long time user of FTM and currently have FTM 2008 so I think I fall in the “Free Upgrade” catagory.

Where is it?

Karen Adams

Sincerely,

190 Les SullivanSeptember 26, 2008 at 10:08 am

It is now 6pm in UK 25th Sept and still no email but I did telephone the UK Ancestry help line 0800 404 9723 and it was answered almost immediately by Katie who was in Utah and she sorted me out with the upgrade code. I must say that the customer service was excellent and Katie was delightful to deal with. After the recent difficulties it did a lot to restore my faith in FTW.
Hopefully the upgrade, ordered quickly and easily, will arrive in the next few weeks and I do not object to paying the £2-95 postage fee.

I have a laptop. I have wireless internet. When I am online with it, family tree maker 2008 states it can not go online I am not connected to the internet.

I have FTM 2008 and have never been able to register it because the program always says I have no internet connection. I can go to your websites, but the program refuses to let me go to any links. I never have been able to figure why. What am I supposed to do. I have the unique activation code that came with FTM2008, but don’t know where to go to enter the information since I can’t register on your site. HELP!!!

Thank you for your time

I am so disappointed. I just received/loaded my upgraded FTM 2009 and find that the calendar that I used all the time in my previous version is missing. I am not happy.

205 LanceOctober 3, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Hey guys. Welcome to the real world. The Ancestry people don’t make any money peddling software at $30 a pop; the real money is in subscriptions to their databases. We get the dregs. Even in California we don’t get the upgrade e-mails. Learn to deal with it.

speaking of blogs
I am not sure if it is included with 2008 or maybe you have it included with 2009 or maybe you are giving it some future thought. What I would like to see is a master Blog that would include all my Family Tree’s, which there are 4 of: Family Tree – A
and Family Tree B and Family Tree – C
and Family Tree – D
What I would like to see is a master Blog that would include all of my Family Tree’s each one would keep be a separate set of Charts and Reports and I would like the ability to make an updates to affect one in Family Tree A that would affect B, C, and D.if they included the same person in all 4 Groups
I realize that I may have to go back and re-create the charts and Reports, for all 4 groups.Yet the changes that I would make for all Family Tree’s would be taking care of with one shot.

I didn’t receive an email offering a free upgrade to FTM 2009 that I know of even though I have been using the program for at least ten years. Instead I purchased FTM 2009 and have been thoroughly disappointed because, despite all attempts (firewall off etc), it won’t let me register. The FTM live help was very friendly but sent me an irrelevant fix for FTM 2008. Any suggestions? FTM doesn’t answer emails and calling during business hours is difficult at best.

Since I can’t register the program I can’t use many of its features.

All-in-all I’m totally disappointed with Ancestry/FTM 2009. The only saving grace is that FTM 2008 still works. How do you get a refund?

209 GlenOctober 8, 2008 at 9:40 am

Enough is enough I fear, FTM is going down the pan, no support, no working product, FTM2008 a disaster, FTM2009 the same from what I have read. I’m off to seek alternatives – any idea’s folks ?

210 GlenOctober 8, 2008 at 11:11 am

Sorry Folks, I take it all back.

I have just spoken to a very nice lady at Ancestry.co.uk who helped me get my upgrade code, and via the website have now ordered my upgrade.

Thank you

211 cgaskinsOctober 8, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Well, I feel like a flaming fool!!! I thought the 2008 FTM WAS the latest version, so I recently purchased it…for about $70…with the promise that I would get a 3-month Ancestry.com membership. NOT SO! I cannot access anything online via the program because apparently the program is not compatible with Windows Vista, although the box says it is!!! What do I do? Will the place I purchased this take it back? I absolutely HATE the format and refuse to enter any data into this program. I really don’t want it!!! I can’t upload a 2009 to see if I like it better because….you guessed it…my program isn’t speaking to the internet and tells me there is NO CONNECTION!

My last purchased version before the 2008 was Version 16. I like it and I like the format. I may have to revert back to it as soon as I can dump this piece of trash I purchased. By the way, don’t presume to tell us you have changed things to help us! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Mine wasn’t “broke”! I just stupidly thought an upgrade would be nice. It isn’t. I think you understand. I await your assistance, please.

212 cgaskinsOctober 8, 2008 at 8:56 pm

2nd post: By the way, I have called the 800 number and it is ALWAYS busy…night and day. There is another # that charges $2 per minute, but I still could get no one on the phone. Someone from our Historical Society informed me that Windows Vista and FTM 2008 are NOT compatible, although the box says they are, and there is a “patch” you can download from somewhere that should fix the problem…..but where is the patch? Also, he told me that it doesn’t always work. Sometimes he has heard of it working, and sometimes it doesn’t. No rhyme or reason.

I will try to return mine to the store where I purchased it, along with copies from this blog to prove I am not making all this up. I may see if the a FTM2009 is available. Rather than go to all the trouble of waiting for a download I may never get…..that may not really work for a program I hate, I may see if the actual 2008 program is more to my liking and will work. Can anyone tell me if I will have the same compatibility problems with 2009? Thank you.

216 Helen BatesOctober 11, 2008 at 4:18 pm

For some reason the weekly newsletters are NOT reaching me. Please let me know what I can do to begin receiving them again. Also, I haven’t received my notice on how to receive my free update for my 2008 FTM.

217 Helen BatesOctober 11, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I need help to find out why I’m not receiving the weekly newsletters and update information. I haven’t received a notice for the free update for the 2008 FTM.
Please advise me on what to do.
One other matter, my email address needs to be changed on my family tree. I believe that it is listed unter the title HALL/BATES. The family tree begins with me, Helen Elizabeth Morton and my parents Aubrey Wilson Morton and Margaret Young Hall. Thank you for any assistance you can give me on these matters.

Yours truly,
Helen Bates

I never got the first e-mail announcing registered users would get 2009 free, much less the e-mail with the cupon??? I mean, this was posted in August and it’s mid October? I’m in the US….

219 LucyOctober 16, 2008 at 12:10 pm

It appears that I am one of many that purchased FTM 2008 but have never received a free upgrade offer.
FTM 2008 was money down the drain as I promptly uninstalled since the ability to continue with my family “book” was no longer a function in the new version.
Regardless, I never received any offer for a free upgrade. I am not interested in a free upgrade to 2009 unless this feature has been restored. Has it been restored?
Thanks, Lucy in TN

I have purchased my FTM program through you for the last number of years and have not received info about the 2009 update . Why?

230 Dennis_KleidOctober 23, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I just got a new computer that has Windows XP and then on October 14, 2008 I installed Family Tree Maker 2008 (activation order 25015226). I bought this through Amazon (order 1-2-4215330-175460) on April 11, 2008, and I just started using it. I would like the free upgrade to Family Tree Maker 2009. Please send me the E-mail for the upgrade. Thanks.

231 Al SantosOctober 23, 2008 at 11:39 pm

just bought a copy of your 2008 software and can’t register (I’ve read that IS one of its problems, among many others)

Here’s the activation key:

As I mentioned, I can’t register (or is it ‘activate) the software becaus the message I keep getting is, “UNABLE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET” but, as you can see by this email… I, in fact, CAN CONNECT!!!

Please tell me how I can go about getting FTM 2009 as I’d like to get started on my tree as soon as possible!

I’ll await your reply!

Good News and Hope!

I am perhaps one of the most complicated cases för FTM 2009 upgrade!

I am an American living in Sweden who purchased FTM 2008 (and all other versions) through TWR in England. They special shipped to me the US version as I was not interested UK CD’s. This was the only one they had and had actually purchased it themselves for evaluation before the UK version was released.

I registered this program in august 08.

I also recieved the first E-mail from FTM and the 2:nd telling me to ignore the first.

I recieved a third E-mail regarding the free offer, followed the directions, and got an immediate confirmation of the order.

About 3 weeks later the CD arrived in my mailbox from the US with both postage and custom fees paid! (and yes… 3 weeks is not an unusual transport time for a non-priority package from the US to Sweden)

I have to thank FTM for their service… at least to me.

236 Joanne C. WilliamsOctober 26, 2008 at 11:16 am

I recently purchased the Deluxe Family Tree Maker 2008. I cannot get it to register! I have tried and tried and keep getting a message that there is a connection problem and to try again later. I have a free 3 month subscription to Ancestery.com if I can ever get it to register. I certainly don’t want to lose that nor do I want to lose the free upgrade to FTM 2009.
Can you please help me?

so I was happy with FTM2006 and I gladly purchased a copy of FTM2008, and I am sorry to say If ever I took a retrograde step this was it.

I regret ever even comtemplating getting 2008, now I hear all registered users of 2008 will be getting a free copy of 2009.

I only purchased 2008 amatter of weeks ago and did anyone tell me there was an upgrade in the offing, no I was not told if I had been I would have waited till the new version was issued.

Why the format of 2006 was abandoned I have no Idea. the pressnt version appers to be so retrogade I can see why FTM2009 is required.

I can assure you this is the last time I purchase such a program from you.

I look forward to what ever changes you have made over 2008 FTW. I have been so frustrated with this program after the using earlier versions for so long. Typing in data is so tedious.
How can I get the coupon for the new version?
Elaine.

I have never received an email for a free upgrade to 2009, and I have been updating & registering since the first versions of FTM, 2008 was a real let down, but I stuck with it, I sincerely hope that I will not be penalised, by missing a cutoff date of 9th Oct 2008, that I have just seen.
Please advise how I receive this voucher for 2009.

246 Vickie WeberNovember 5, 2008 at 8:39 pm

I never got the email for the 2009 version either.

247 William LagerNovember 5, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I had ordered FTM 2008, however, there were problems with that program so I sent it back and have continued with FTM 2006, Version 16. Now that you have fixed the problems, can I re-order and use it as a continuum for FTM 2006, Version 16?
I hope to hear from you.

Thank-you

I purchased FTM 2008 Platinum in Sept/2008 and can’t get on-line with it to Register it or register for the Ancestry subscription. I tried your various suggestions, but no joy. Can you help me or give me a contact for assistance?

Thanks

251 SamNovember 6, 2008 at 8:44 pm

It’s funny that I keep coming here every day to see if someone from FTM actually responds to their own boards. I work for a major software company and if we ever treated our customers this way, I’d feel ashamed. I read post after post of people asking politely for info about something that this company offered to make amends for. Now it seems that they need to make amends for trying to make amends. I have 2008, I use it all the time. I started on 2006 but didn’t really get into using the program until 2008 so I don’t have the same feelings about the loss of functionality from 2006 to 2008. I registered (and reregistered) many times and I still haven’t received my email either. Now hearing that people are calling and FTM is telling people that the offer is over is ridiculous. How can any respectable company offer their customers a free version, completely ignore their own boards, where people are asking for help, and then deny people when they finally get through on the phone. For some people, the phone call ends up costing people money. This is just not right and it’s sad. I’m sure there is some legal action the customer’s of 2008 can take. Are there any lawyers reading this board? Class action lawsuits usually get a company moving. I guess it wouldn’t be so bad if someone from FTM would just respond and tell us what is going on. And for future reference, please do not think your customers are idiots. If you offer something…deliver it, or don’t offer it. It’s a hard economy right now and the fact that people are paying for the service to do their research is hard enough for us. Again, it’s sad. When your competition is so far below you, software companies become complacent and believe that customers will stick with you because there is no place else to go. Unfortunately, that’s usually the case, but eventually, a company will come around that will seize this opportunity to build a simple but solid program that treats their customers with respect. I only hope, for your sake, that you realize that your customers should be your focus before you lose them all. Between the disrespect for your customers, the weak development of your programs, your obvious lack of customer research, and you’re diminishing “free trial periods”, it looks like you have become another corporate machine that cares more about your bottom line than you do with sharing your customer’s love of researching their family histories. I’ll keep checking this board every day to see if someone in your company decides to care and give us what you originally promised. We honestly hope you become the company that we used to love.

253 Lynda GreavesNovember 6, 2008 at 10:30 pm

I never received an email for my update to Family Tree Maker 2009. What do I have to do to get it. I have been a loyal customer and I am a little frustrated about it. Thank You.

254 Vanessa ThomsonNovember 7, 2008 at 3:34 pm

I am very upset at the way I have been treated by the Family Tree Maker Team.

I read this blog with interest and have waited patiently for my email to update from FTM 2008 to FTM 2009.

In September I emailed to see what was going on and was told that I would be contacted by Ancestry.com.

I have chased again this week to be told the upgrade has expired and I do not qualify for it any longer.

I would like someone to explain how an offer for the users of FTM 2008 can expire if they were not sent the email in the first place… We have put up with a substandard product for the past 12 months – I went back to using FTM 2006 so was looking forward to FTM 2009 but now feel very let down.

Has anyone else actually got their upgrade?

255 Carole JohnsonNovember 7, 2008 at 6:15 pm

I don’t believe anyone received a free upgrade to our inferior versions of Family Tree Maker 2008.
I too have reverted back to my 2006 version of this software. I shall not be buying Family Tree Maker 2009 because I don’t believe it will be any better than the 2008 version.
Our queries and complaints have been ignored so there is little chance of an improvement.
When my 2006 version no longer receives support I shall be looking for other genealogy software.

256 William MangoNovember 7, 2008 at 6:20 pm

I am a registered owner of FTM 2008 who also reverted bach to FTM 16. I read that there would be a free upgrade to FTM 2009 for 2008 customers. I never received an email regarding this upgrade. Is this free upgrade still in effect?

263 FionaNovember 11, 2008 at 9:58 am

I am a registed owner of FTM 2008.
Ihave awaited my e-mail concerning the 2008 upgrade to 2009. I have phoned to ask about progress. I have sent e-mail and posted on another blog where others are also enquiring….. What do you have to do to get a response from ancestry???? On the 2nd Sepyember RUSSEL you said

‘Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.’

I was told when I phoned this weekend that it was too late the offer was finished???!!!! so…… I AM ONE DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER AMONG MANY THAT HAVE BEEN LET DOWN.

264 BettyNovember 12, 2008 at 6:47 pm

Today I installed the new FTM 2009, however now I can not open any reports or charts, a menu eventually comes up saying the program is not responding and do I want to close. Any suggestions. Thanks

265 Vic JohnsonNovember 12, 2008 at 11:45 pm

So what IS the deal? I bought FTM2008 in February 2008 and installed it in my Vista machine, right here in the US of A (California). It IS registered. I can do web searches.

There has been NO email to me regarding anything about FTM2009 – free or otherwise.

A casual surfing of the Internet brought me to this site today (12 Nov 2008).

So the questions after 264 other postings are: How do I get my FREE copy of FTM2009? Or is the supposed “offer” of a free copy no longer available?

I also bought the 2008 version around this time a year ago (actually, August 2007), finally installed it during August 08, couldn’t register it, then promptly had a major computer failure. Have just installed it again today, found that I could not register it again till I found the patch.

Looks like I will be out in the cold as well – too bad that they do have my email address and I paid good money early.

279 MildredNovember 19, 2008 at 7:43 pm

I just listened in on the webinar on the Family Tree Maker 2009. I have been using your software since I started my research on my family. I have copies of every version since I started with version 7. I have not yet received an email telling me about a free upgrade to version 2009. How do I go about getting my code to get my free upgrade. I have stayed with you through the years, even having to go out and purchase a second copy of 2008 when I had problems getting it loaded and working last year.

How can I get my code to get my free upgrade? I don’t understand why I did not get an email. Not only am I registered with Family Tree Maker, but I am also a member of Ancestry.com and have been for over 3 years.

Thank you,
Mildred

I still have not recieved information on how I receive the free upgrade to FTM 2009. How do I get this?

281 George RappNovember 19, 2008 at 11:57 pm

I never got a second mailing for the free upgrade to Family Tree Maker. Original link on mailing of 9/9/08 comes up to a message it’s a jungle out there. Couldn’t find the information on the Blog mentioned in the webinar all I see are messages saying it will be or has been sent and wait.

I have been using FMT for many, many years. I have 2008 and absolutely hate it. I have been out of genealogy for two years or so and have just come back. I just heard of the free 2009 offer. How do I find it.

283 Ruth JoplingNovember 20, 2008 at 8:28 pm

I received the first email which told me I would be getting a free FTM 2009, but I did not hear anything further until I was listening to the Webinar yesterday, when the subject of the free FTM 2009 for registered users of FTM 2008 came up. Is it possible that I can still get my copy?

284 FionaNovember 21, 2008 at 10:24 am

288 Lis QuinnNovember 21, 2008 at 6:47 pm

I attended the webinar last wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed, I purchased FMT 2008 a few months ago, but had such a problem registering, I was in various parts of your website to find out how the register. I finally managed to locate the problem after the webinar. My issue is that I did not know about the free upgrade to FTM 2009 until the webinar. I am wondering if that offer still is available and if so, how do I go about it.

I’m not sure if I’m this is where I am to address this issue, and if I am in the wrong area, please advise to whom and where I am to take this issue. I listened on the web about the 2009 program, and am happy to have been a part. I may have missed hearing information on the 2008/2009 program switch over….but…I have the 2008, and to my knowledge I never received the 2008 upgrade. Do I understand right that the 2009 is offered to me FREE? I would appreciate more information on this and how to obtain or download it. Thank you…. Lorinda

I have not received the notice to upgrade to 2009. I am a registered user of 2008. How do I get the free upgrade

296 TeresaNovember 23, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Oh my gosh, I’ve been doing research for over nine years and bought FTM 2008 over the summer along with a new laptop to work on. Because my daughter was getting married and we were busy with wedding plans I didn’t begin to use either until just this week. I bought FTM 2008 because I used it when I first started my genealogy but now I’m really upset that this program isn’t any good, users of 2008 don’t seem to be getting the free upgrade to 2009 and some people have mentioned that the upgrade ruined their computers. I’m on a brand new computer and I don’t want to mess it up with bad software. I couldn’t even register my FTM 2008, it won’t connect. I’m not sure what to do now. Should I look for new genealogy software? I just installed FTM 2008 tonight and I’m not able to upgrade to 2009? Is this going to be a safe program on my new computer? This is really disappointing and distressing. It sure put a damper on my excitement of being able to get my years of research into the computer and share with my family.

297 Colleen AllenNovember 24, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Am I able to import my family tree from http://www.ancestry.com to Family Tree Maker 2008? I really like the features of 2008 and the new 2009 but find I use the internet alot, too. (Depends on where I am and what computer I have access to.)
Please advise and give instructions if this is possible.
thanks,
C Allen

298 Colleen AllenNovember 24, 2008 at 7:06 pm

I just looked at some other requests for registered FTM 2008 users to get the free 2009 upgrade. I went back to my file and found the gift from FTM “We’ll soon be releasing Family Tree Maker® 2009. When we do, we’ll send you an email that will tell you how to get this latest version for FREE.” (8/8/08)Then on 9/10/08″So many people have tried to upgrade to Family Tree Maker 2009 that it overwhelmed our online store site. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

In the next few days we’ll send you an email with a new link and coupon code, plus instructions for getting your free upgrade before October 15th” That was it, no link, no code.
Please provide this upgrade information to me.
ThanX,
C Allen

299 TeresaNovember 25, 2008 at 8:11 pm

I posted last night that I was very nervous about installing FTM 2008 after reading the blog but I wanted to say that I’ve now got it installed and after downloading the patch the program is working great. While many have complaints I personally love the new lay out and the new features of the program. All that stressing last night for nothing, LOL I’m very happy with FTM 2008 :)

300 Kathy AhlbrandtNovember 28, 2008 at 1:19 pm

I have just read this message about a free upgrade to FTM 2009 & wonder how I can get this. I also have been a little disappointed in my 2008 version but don’t recall ever receiving an email with info or a coupon for the free upgrade. I would appreciate your letting me know about this.

Thanks.

302 James StevensNovember 29, 2008 at 12:00 am

I just purchased FTM 2009 from Sams and on the box it says three months of ancestry.com. However, when I register online it only shows 14 day trial period. I want my three months please. I also need some kind of confirmation fast so the 14 day period does not run out before you clear it up. Thank you.

303 SueNovember 29, 2008 at 7:09 am

I bought the 2008 FTM and registered but did not receive a coupon. I was one of the dissatisfied users who backed out of 2008 after my files were corrupted (which I still have not receovered from) to FTM VS 16. I still have lots of clean up to do. I am sure all my note statements where I had lots of my research were truncated. Please add me to your list for the free 2009 version of FTM. Thank you.

305 Darrell StevensDecember 1, 2008 at 6:32 pm

I let this get away from me, expecting that some additional information would be forth coming. I have been a fan and user of FTM since the 90′s. I was one of those that had FTM 2008 in my hands for months until the patch came thru to allow me to successfully move from FTM 16 to FTM 2008. But I seem to have been lost in the cracks. Is the new version still being provided to people who purchesed FTM 2008 when it first came out?

Also, I have been a subscriber to the US Census for many years(if that counts for anything)

I bought FTM 2006 and have had continual problems with running it on my new HP computer running Vista. I had bought a new computer with the sole purpose of doing genealogy. So I bought FTM 2008 but never ran it as I didn’t like the interface. I haven’t heard anything from Ancestry offering me 2009. What do I need to do to receive the free program? Hopefully it will resolve all my problems.

308 Tony BakerDecember 4, 2008 at 1:59 am

I have never been able to go online. When I go to File /Go Online, I get the message: “Canot go online. The computer is not connected to the internet”. When I click on “Web Search” I get the message “No Internet Connection”. I can go online for all other websites, what is wrong with Family Tree Maker ?.

Very interesting. I just surfed to this board for the first time to learn that it is not just me , since I like many of you made the mistake of loading my genealogy files to FTM 2008. Each time I attempt to work with the files I become so disgusted that I just close it down. That has been my plight for the past year, I upgraded to FTM 2008 in December of 2007. I did not know that there was a promised free upgrade to FTM 2009 and have never received any notification. Under the parameters outlined I would assume that I am entitled to not receive the upgrade as it appears that others have not received it either. I did not renew my subscription to Ancestor.com this year as there is little need for me to search for information to input to such a flawed program.

Knowing that their organization developed and sold such a flawed program don’t you think someone in the organization would have initiated an effort to repair the damage with their loyal customer base. Does anyone in the organization read these comments or are they just funneled into a vast delete file? I dont see any recent responses. I guess they are too busy selling FTM 2009.

311 FionaDecember 6, 2008 at 10:56 am

Family tree maker team!!!!! Why is no one replying in any form to the questions being asked about upgrades to 2009 to quote from your own opening comments on this blog:

Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.

What happening to customer satisfaction which you claim to value?????

313 mansoorDecember 11, 2008 at 7:44 am

From ..Mansoor
EMAIL..mansoor39@live.com

I got your contact and would like to share a very important matter with you. If it does not interest you, I apologize for the inconvenience . I am Mr Mansoor, I am an average-aged man of 43 years of age, a Persian of Iranian origin; I work in Iraq with the U.S. military as a translator. I have evidence to show after you.
In one of our military operations in Iraq, we have found a safe in a large house of a great businessman in the Iraqi city of Tikrit. The safe contained a large sum of money, U.S. dollars, ie U.S. $ 24 Million. We immediately have kept this safe in a safety place with three other American soldiers. After long deliberations between us whether we should put these funds to American authorities in charge dead place or not, we all decided to share these funds between us. For sharing, each of us has received the sum of U.S. $ 6 million.
For my part because of security problems in Iraq, I decided to arrange with private security guards in Iraq to transfer my share of these funds outside Iraq, specifically in London.
I put the money in a package as family and I have coded which means that nobody knows that the package contains money except me.
So I contact to see if you can help me get the package from London and transfer it to your country or I would invest the funds in profitable areas.
I give you some percentage of these funds for me to accept, the percentage we will discuss when I receive your reply.
Iraqi insurgents are against me so they are looking for me to kill me because I do translations for the Americans military. I do not go out any way without the U.S. military to avoid the worst. I do not use phones either not receiving calls here. I use only the Internet and walkie-talkies to communicate with soldiers with whom I work.
If this transaction is concluded, I will resign from this work because to live here in Iraq is too risky.
I thank you and I am expecting your reply.mansoor39@live.com

Hi
I have FTM 2008 which I purchased in June this year and am experiencing a heap of problems with it and do not get any replies to my queries. I check for updates and am informed that my program is up to date and have not been advised of any patches you might have released. I have just found out that this program should have been replaced by you with FTM2009 version. As per your August info I have never recieved this offer even though my program was registered with you at the time of loading. I have checked all your newsletters which I recieve regularly to no avail and have never had any mail with regard to this in my Spam filter which I check daily. Could you plese advise me as to exactly when I will recieve FTM 2009. & also if it includes the appropriate manual as I purchased the one to go with FTM 2008 and assume that the FTM2009 version is not compatable with FTM2008
Plese do me the courtesy of a reply to the following email address in New Zealand

Thank you

I registered FTM 2008 when I bought and installed it on my new computer earlier this year. I still have not received an email re the free update. Why not?

An unrelated question is whether there is any way to display a tree in the family view in 2008.

316 Mary SchroedlDecember 17, 2008 at 2:53 pm

I have tried for 3 days to register my 2008 Family tree maker and can’t. I have entered so much of my family and am afraid to reload the program for fear I’ll loose the info. I am so disappointed in the program because I can’t register and get information. Please help

Could you please tell me where and how I can upgrade my 2008 program to the 2009 version. I have had no notice as yet.
Yours faithfully

I’ve been a registered FTM 2008 for several months and helped test various patches for this program earlier in the year. I haven’t received any message or coupon regarding an upgrade to 2009. Have they just given up on us?

319 Roz JonesDecember 22, 2008 at 10:56 am

Never received any emails from anyone regarding ‘free upgrade’

I too have not received any information about the 2009 package. I have been a long time customer with FTM. It appears there are more issues with the email than with the 2008 package. What’s up?

By the way… I have also been a long time member of Ancestry.com and now have family trees in both areas. How do I make this easy on myself and download the Ancestry family tree to my FTM tree and vise verse?

321 SueDecember 24, 2008 at 10:42 am

I’m not supposed to know this but my husband has bought me FTM2009 for Christmas.I currently have 2008, and no free upgrade offer. If the upgrade offer should happen, I would like to know if I will be given some sort of a credit since I will already have 2009. My husband is not into genealogy so he has no way of knowing about this freebie, and I can’t tell him, or he’ll know that I found out quite by accident that he got me this for Christmas

I also registered and not recieved an email re: FTM 2009

323 Stephen HeldDecember 29, 2008 at 5:34 pm

I never received an email offering a free copy of the 2009 version. I registered my FTM 2008 software in January 2008. How can I get my free copy of FTM 2009?

Thanks.

well i was never able to register my 2008 or go on line with it or successfully download the patch.

325 JeanneJanuary 2, 2009 at 8:14 pm

I just got back into my 2008 Family Treee Maker and it cannot connect to Ancestry.com etc. I tried to install a patch and it ruined my whole File so I had to uninstall and reinstall. HELP! I was never notified about an upgrade to 2009.

326 SheliaJanuary 3, 2009 at 1:07 pm

I purchased FTM 2008 (Platinum Edition) late in 2008 and installed and registered the software Oct 30, 2008 (lot of trouble registering, had to finally download a patch). I have yet to receive an email regarding the update to 2009 and only heard about the offer through magazine articles sometime after I had bought 2008. If I had known about the problems people are having with FTM2008 and now getting with FTM2009 I would probably have have looked elsewhere for genealogy software. As an additional matter, I also never received the Ancestory Magazine that was supposted to be part of the Platinum Edition purchase.

327 Nancy C LongJanuary 3, 2009 at 3:31 pm

I am a long time user of FTM and did register my 2008 version of FTM but have not received any communication regarding my free upgrade to 2009. Please let me (and all the others) know how to proceed with this problem. Thank you.

How can I get free 2009 version

329 Eunice PrestonJanuary 3, 2009 at 6:56 pm

I also have not recieved an e-mail about the free 2009 version. Reading the comments on this blog every one is having the same problem . The company is getting a very bad reputation.

330 David RawsthorneJanuary 4, 2009 at 10:37 pm

Never received the email, forcing my wife to purchase the 2009 version. A reformat of the main PC here was then followed by the FTM V16 CD being unreadable in the drive, nor on other PC’s

The only option was to use 2008 (no way!) or buy a new version of 2009.

Whats it been, 4 or 5 months now since the announcement was made – long enough to get our free upgrades, but nope, no sign of them.

331 Richard WalkerJanuary 5, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I am a long time user of Family Tree Maker going back many versions.
I presently have V 2008 and understand that there is a free upgrade to V2009 available. Please advise how I can obtain.

332 Dorotha GammieJanuary 7, 2009 at 4:31 pm

I have tried to register my FTM 2008 and can’t do it. I have tried doing what you suggest on the help line and it says I have everything I should but it still won’t let me register.

333 Dorotha GammieJanuary 7, 2009 at 4:34 pm

I have looked in the searach for the meaning of Parsing and what to do about it. When I put some GED information into my 2008 it came up with this.

It sounds as though I am among the many registered users of the 2008 version, who are not only unhappy with the original product and have raised many queries, direct with the authorities, but have yet to receive the obligatory email advising me of the 2009 FREE upgrade. I have often tried the menu button to see if there have been any updates, but have been told there are NONE, and yet the authorities have been secretly getting a 2009 version up and running. Here in the UK the Platinum version of 2009 is for Sale, but no mention is showing on the packet if it can be an upgrade to a 2008 version.
I would love to hear from the programmers what improvements they have come up with ?
Feel free to email me direct !!
Regards from the UK

336 Linda MoellerJanuary 16, 2009 at 12:37 am

I also purchased the 2008 version, couldn’t register, etc. I used it long enough to note than it is a stripped down version–obviously replacing usefulness with worthless CDs with come with the program. I can do better charts, etc. with my old version 11 which would allow me to use my wide format printer to produce great 13 x 19 charts. I uninstalled 2008 and am quite happily using ver. 11. I suggest that Ancestry has removed features to make room for integration with their web sites. As for updates, or emails related to any updates, I have received none–couldn’t register! I’m looking elsewhere for software.

337 Mike PatryJanuary 16, 2009 at 7:05 pm

I have never received an offer for a free upgrade to the 2009 version. I had to register my copy thru FTM customer services who opened my account for me.

338 Maureen BausemerJanuary 18, 2009 at 6:44 pm

how do i get 2009 upgrade? I have registered FTM 2008 previously

339 April MacLeodJanuary 21, 2009 at 8:04 am

I purchased FAmily Tree Maker 2008 last spring/ summer and began my free subscription 22 August 2008. I did receive an email for the free upgrade but I cannot find it and I would like to upgrade to 2009. When I received the email I was working so hard and fast on my family information that I did not want to risk implementing an upgrade. I now have sufficient back-up to do this. I am enjoying the genealogy research. Thank you, April MacLeod

340 RobJanuary 26, 2009 at 8:10 pm

I purchased Family Tree Maker 2008 in December 2007. It was registered in January 2008. I never received the free upgrade e-mail.

Today I called Family Tree Maker support to inquire about this. They told me that the free upgrade offer ended in September 2008. They refused to give me this upgrade even though they told me they found my registration in their own computer records!

Well now I am mad. What kind of customer service is this to make this kind offer and then yank it away in such a short time? I can understand setting a deadline but less than one month? Ancestry.com needs to realize that e-mail is not a reliable way to get the message out. Spam filters can block these messages. Most people wouldn’t notice this blog, I only discovered it recently. Ancestry.com needs to give more time for this upgrade!

341 Diana CrequeJanuary 30, 2009 at 3:11 pm

I recently added my copy of Family Tree Maker 2008 to my new computer.

Now I can’t use the internet option.

342 David VestJanuary 31, 2009 at 10:30 am

Probably the biggest problem that I have with Family Tree Maker 2008 is the constant “No Internet Connection”. I purchased FTM08 on 8-Feb-2008 and have never been able to connect to the Internet with it no matter what I do including adding the application to my firewall allow list. This obviously has also prevented me from registering the product. Given that, how may I obtain my free upgrade to 2009? -Thanks

343 Joan RenfrowFebruary 2, 2009 at 10:25 pm

The following was written on another article from Michelle regarding FTM 2008 and the free upgrade that was never received. I also never received an e-mail, answer or see ya! from anyone at Ancestry.

Do you really not care?

Hello Michelle,

I am quite frustrated at the moment as I had never received any notice of my upgrade (although I was told many times that I would be getting it). I am now told that the time is for the upgrade to 2009 is over and I will not be receiving any help from Ancestry over the agonizing, absolute defeat that I received from your version 2008.

I am a member of ancestry.com and have used Family Tree Marker since the 1st edition.

I was never able to register on line as my version 2008 would never bring the registration page up on my screen. I registered through customer service, or at least that is what I was told.

Have I been abandoned by your company?

Have I not complained loudly enough? I thought that I would give y’all the benefit of the doubt and allow you to resolve the many problems but now I see that all that got me was out in the cold.

I am very disappointed in the 2008 product but I am even more disappointed in being abandoned.

I really hate to have to end a very long standing trust and relationship in this manner but I feel that Ancestry is giving me no choice.

Sincerely,
Joan Renfrow

I’ve been a registered owner of FTM for many years, but I never received an offer for a free upgrade to FTM 2009. I’m getting real tired of my FTM 2008 crashing every five minutes.

345 DebFebruary 4, 2009 at 12:34 pm

I purchased the 2008 version from ‘Ancestry’ before it was shipped. I held off installing it after reading comments about problems with the 2008 version. I installed & registered it a few months ago after I read that I would get a “FREE” upgrade to the 2009 version.

As with others, I NEVER received that 2009 “FREE UPGRADE” offer, although I have had ‘every’ Family Tree Maker version since #1 and have been an ‘Ancestry’ subscriber for years.

I am quite aggravated as per this and suppose I have to continue to use my 2006 version as I cannot trust ‘Ancestry’ with newer versions or broken written statements. They are real quick with sending e-mails so I can ‘purchase’ the 2009 version though!

346 Janet DoneganFebruary 8, 2009 at 4:02 pm

My son-in-law sent me this link. I have Family Tree Maker 2008 and although it hasn’t been a total loss, I am experiencing so many issues. I have paid to have it looked at because I thought it had something to do with my computer. I was told it was the program. The biggest issue I am having with it right now is that whenever I have to enter/OK I am kicked out of the program. Please consider sending me the 2009 upgrade so that I may continue to enjoy my years of research. I look forward to hearing from you.

347 Wanda HomenFebruary 8, 2009 at 6:13 pm

I registered my 2008 version and I don’t remember getting an e-mail about 2009 update. Please contact me and let me know if there is an update version of 2008, and if the upgrade to 2009 is free.
I have been an Ancestry.com and Family Tree Maker customer for many years and I can’t afford to buy the newest version of Family Tree Maker.
Please let me know if you have the free version of it.
Thank you,
Mrs. Homen

348 Frank Z Brill JrFebruary 16, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I purchased Family Tree Maker 2008 when it was released. I never installed it because there were problems moving my data over from an older PC. Lucky that I had made hard copies of all of my data because it looks like the data has been lost from the PC and will have to be completely reentered. Meanwhile, I just found out from a geneology friend that there is already a 2009 version out. I had saved all of the Family Tree Magazine Newsletters I had been receiving (but not yet reading). Scanning through them, I found that version 2009 had been offered for free, but I never received one of the coupons. Maybe this was because I never installed/registered the v. 2008? What do I need to do to get the free v. 2009 now?

Sincerely,
—Frank Brill

Thanks,

Please can you advise when I might receive the offer for a free upgrade to FTM 2009? Located in the UK

351 Judy WilderFebruary 27, 2009 at 8:15 am

Totally dissatisfied with FTM 2008. Please make sure I get the email for the free upgrade. Hopefully, 2009 will convince me not to look for another genealogy software.

352 Phillip E SmithFebruary 27, 2009 at 10:40 am

I also registered my copy of FTM 2008 in August and on e-mailing them inquiring about my free upgrade was first informed that I had not registered my copy. then that the offer was no longer available as time had run out. that is not what their web site claims, in fact it claims that Quote “if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version”.
I have e-mailed again demanding my upgrade, Ill keep you informed. This is no way to treat their loyal customers and you should all complain and complain until you receive the free upgrade or use the small claims court to make them comply

353 Sheila BrownFebruary 28, 2009 at 11:50 am

I also have been dissatisfied with FTM 2008. I’ve used FTM since version 4 or so and have always loved it, until 2008. I did not receive any word of a free upgrade until I stumbled onto this blog. I believe that I did register my FTM 2008 in Jan. 2008. Is there any way to still get a free upgrade? I really hate to have to purchase 2009 to see if it fixes the things that I miss from the older versions.
I am active in my local genealogical organizations and used to teach classes on using FTM before this 2008 version came along. I have not been comfortable recommending FTM to newbies since then.

358 Dr. Jordan AtinskyMarch 12, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I still can’t understand why I have not received the 2009 version. I never received any coupons etc.

I am also interested in the World Wide registration. I was a member, at $150 in 2007-2008 however the increse in price in 2008 and the present economy resulted in my needing to drop it. I would be intereste in re-joining at the $150 level.

Looking forward to some positve results. Dr. Atinsky

Where are the people from ANCESTRY I am message 362 and there has not been a reply from an Ancestry staff member since message 45 assuring every one they will get the free up grade but it still hasnt happened and it is plain no one from Ancestry is even reading these messages there is even one about one of the wars happening at this time not even to do with FAMILY TREE MAKER, if I stood at the counter of my employer and ignored the customers who arrived for help I would not work for long. Come on let us at least know whats going on.
