For our valued Family Tree Maker 2008 customers:

As we announced earlier, we’re giving our loyal Family Tree Maker 2008 customers a free upgrade to 2009. Last year around this time we released Family Tree Maker 2008. There was some initial customer dissatisfaction with the functionality in that release. We heard from customers who felt they didn’t receive what they were expecting. Over the past year, we’ve listened carefully to their feedback and have added many new features in the form of free patches which have been enthusiastically received. Family Tree Maker 2009 has even more features and functions that were not in previous patches. We listed some of these features in a previous post, along with additional features that will be part of Version 2009 when they become available.

In the next few weeks, Family Tree Maker 2008 registrants will receive an email with a one-time-use coupon that can be redeemed for a free version of Family Tree Maker 2009. You might have heard about a previous email that went to a portion of Family Tree Maker users. Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.

We want you to be completely satisfied and delighted with the product you have purchased. The family history work you do is important, and we want to support you the best we can.

Sincerely,

The Family Tree Maker Team

I am also a registered user and have not received an email (I am in the US). How can this be resolved? I previously sent an email to FTM on this topic, but received no reply.

How can you check whether you are a registered user ?

I’m sure I did register, but is there a way to check on it?

August 29, 2008 at 1:32 am
Robin

I did register. I received an email on 2 September 2007 from admin@ftm.com confirming registration and giving me a Username and password.

I haven’t received an email advising of the new release.

However, as my previous request, Is there a way to confirm registration with FTM?

In the next few weeks you will receive an email…..

This email will provide you with the information

John,

We realize their is a pending communication/email; the issue for me is I never received the prior email Russ referenced above “As we announced in an email to you earlier, we’re giving our loyal Family Tree Maker 2008 customers a free upgrade to 2009.” This would lead me to believe that the distribution list for the prior email is what will be used for the “free 2009″ coupon (i.e., the concern/desire to be on the distribution list)

So we FTM 2008 users are doubly messed with? We get a crappy product, and now we have to for weeks while others get FTM 2009 already? You suck.

I don’t know where you live but some USA registered users got a sort of early alert email but I understand that emails will be going out shortly with the details

For users in other countries (I live in AU), nothing has yet been sent but I understand soon.

Okay, I am a register user of FTM 2008 (at least I’m pretty sure I am), and was a beta tester for FTM 2009—and I did not receive an email about the release of FTM 2009.

What gives?

Good to hear from you Russel, we where a bit worried.
Looking forward to receive my email. I am located in Europe. There should be a (perhaps it is in FTM2009) opportunity to see in “About” window that your copy of FTM is a registered one.

Russell Hannig

If you have registered Version 2008 and didn’t see our first email, you’ll probably still get the second email telling you how to get the free version. Here are some reasons why you may not have received the first email:

1) Your address is in a country other than the United States. Our first email went to the US. Our next email will go to customers around the world.
2) Your registration doesn’t show an address. Our next email will go to this group, too.
3) The first email got marked as spam and could be in your spam inbox (in this case go to your spam box and look for an email from Ancestry.com)

I hope this doesn’t mean that those of us who put up with 2008 from day one aren’t going to be waiting for two months down the road to get our copy of 2009 while someone else walks into a store tomorrow and buys it.

I look forward to my free “upgrade” which I consider to be well deserved and hopefully will restore some of the functionality of earlier versions, functions that were quite essential and yet taken away from us when 2008 came out.
New capability such as mapping an ancestors “route” may be nice but all in one trees and the ability to list by aka are much more important to me. Fingers crossed, and hopefully I shall get the appropriate email when it is sent out.
Yours patiently…..
Les

Thank you Russel for clarify for us why e.g I did not get the first email, but I have registered my FTM 2008, I can not see any information about that registration when I go to both ancestry.com or ancestry.co.uk. I would assume that all products that you register are visible or perhaps I have been looking at a wrong page that is “My Account”.

Thank you for thinking of your dedicated, if not sometimes frustrated, users by offering the coupon. I sure hope 2009 is better than 2008! Hey, if we really didn’t like your products you would never hear from us again.

August 29, 2008 at 1:18 pm

Gretar has a point. It would be helpful if our copy of FTM showed “Registered” in the “about” window. Most programs where you have to register the program show this.

I like most have registered 2008 and am waiting for my email containing the 2009 upgrade.

I however must be old and slow thinking – which I am at times – but my issues with 2008 have been with stability of the platform and not some of the other items others are talking about. Oh well, I await my email.

August 29, 2008 at 2:47 pm
John

I, too, registered (actually multiple times, just to make sure) and did not receive an email. I will be very surprised to receive an email for this new offer.

Why not just bypass the coupons and have 2009 install as an “update” to 2008? Sounds like a win-win for everyone — less hastle for TGN and great PR, plus the likelihood of many more loyal and happy customers!

August 29, 2008 at 3:39 pm

If you are unsure if you’ve registered your FTM 2008, register it again. On the tool bar in FTM Simply go to Help and Activate ancestry subscription.

I too, never received the email re: FTM 2009, I registered, I have no spam filter on my inbox. They are obviously having problems sending out this e-mail.

They have also taken about 6 months to answer my support question. Clearly they are overwhelmed.

They need to provide us with a mechinism for US to ASK THEM for the free upgrade, not WAIT for their e-mail, which may never arrive.

Good luck to all.

I received the first e-mail saying that I would receive instructions at a later date for installing the free copy of FTM 2009, but as yet have not received that second e-mail. I have not gotten any emails with regard to the 2009 upgrade. I had just purchased 2008 when today I was told on the phone by Ancestry tech support a free upgrade is being given. I would say after using 2008 the upgrade would be welcomed as my version 9 seems to be superior in functions.

Does FTM 2008 have to work to get the 2009 version to work, or is it a stand-alone version? My registered version of 2008 is useless and simply stops working. In frustration I uninstalled it to get that junk off of my computer, and I feel much better about it now. If the 2009 version requires 2008 to be functional to work, don’t bother.

In DearMyrtle’s Podcast it was stated that FTM 2009 would be available on September 3 for download, but the retail version would not appear until mid to end September.

Russell,

Thank you for letting us know that you will make sure current 2008 users we receive the free upgrade to 2009, even if we do not receive the prior email.

Can you let us know when Ancestry will be sending the “coupon.” Many of us were hoping that simulations with the release of the 2009, on September 3 at the Federation of Genealogical Societies Convention in Philadelphia, that we could receive this coupon/way to access the new version that would address many of our prior challenges with 2008.

An update on timing, or the email, would be appreciated and appropriate.

I have been a loyal FTM customer since 1996. I have LOVED every version UNTIL FTM 2008. I’ve tried working with it several times. There is not the ease, the visual aesthetics the intuitiveness in FTM 2008 that there is in all the previous versions. I realize this is my opinion and it is just an opinion. If others like it and use it, I think that is great!!! I would like to ask if anyone knows how I can return to a previous version of FTM. The last version I used was FTM Version 16. Problem is, after having used FTM 2008, I can’t go back to a previous version. When I try and open the file in a previous version, it says that I can’t do it. Please, can someone just tell me how I can revert to a previous version before FTM 2008? Thank you…..

My email from Ancestry UK arrived on 4th Sep and contained an ‘activation number’ for use on the Ancestry Shop site. A credit card is needed to pay the £2.95 postage, and the CDs are due to arrive in 2 to 6 weeks!!!
A telephone number is given for queries, 0870 850 8752, so perhaps that might be useful for those who have still not been contacted?

You’re one of the luckier ones. I bought my copy of FTM2008 back in July 2007 – I still have a copy of the order confirmation, and I checked that the e-mail I used is still valid – I haven’t seen anything from TGN / Ancestry about a free upgrade – and I live in the USA!!!

I just tried calling the number on the order confirmation – “Telephone Customer Service: 1-800-262-3787.

If you are calling from outside the United States, please dial 1-801-705-7620.

Representatives are available weekdays from 7am to 9pm MST and Saturday from 8am to 5pm MST, closed Sunday.”

Guess what, they’re closed and its a Saturday – 8:53 AM MST.

That is real customer service.

James Polzner, have you tried makibg a GEDCOM file with FTM 2008 which you should be able to open in version 16? You won’t be able to transfer graphics, etc., but all your text should be included.

Re previous about Saturday support – I guess thats a problem keepng old e-mails, the new hours of “support” are clearly listed as Monday through Friday :(

But isn’t that when most of us research our trees, during the working week – I bet nobody researches at the weekend.

I guess that TGN needed to stop Saturday support so they could fund the aggressive marketing push – their ads for Ancestry are everywhere.

Are “bromaelor” and “Elaine” (http://www.familytreeforum.com/family-tree-software-hints-tips/51000-family-tree-maker-2009-free-update.html) the only people in the UK to have received the email regarding a free upgrade to FTM 2009? I’m touched by the way registered FTM 2008 users still have have to pay £2.95 for the “free” upgrade, and order by 26 September to qualify – that really does rub salt into the wound!!

As yet there are no reviews of the product, so I’m assuming no one at all has received a copy yet. I wonder why?

Hmm…despite “Robin” saying that FTM 2009 is available at http://www.familytreemaker.com do I get a message saying “Sorry, your search – Family Tree Maker 2009 – did not match any products”? The same applied for a search for just 2009!

It seems that Ancestry/TGN itself hasn’t even heard of FTM 2009!!

Maybe we’ve all imagined it…

Christopher

Yes, it is there. I had a problem trying to find it, and the only way for me to return to it is by a bookmark.

Have a good look around the site. You’ll find it eventually. They’ve almost hidden it. Why they didn’t display it on their home page, I’ll never know.

September 6, 2008 at 1:23 pm
Lynn

Christopher and Robin,

The link on the US website is: http://store.ancestry.com/index.aspx?p=MFSKU4637&cj=1&sid=blog&o_xid=0002370517&o_lid=0002370517&AID=10464016&AFFSITEID=2370517&ADD=09%252f06%252f2008%2b16%253a07%253a12&AMISC=blog&ATYPE=6

You can not find this page via a search on Ancestry, so they are probably waiting until next week to publicly feature this on the website, ideally to coincide with the release the “coupon” to 2008 owners in the US (i.e., if you try to process the order, there is a place to input a “coupon code”)

Fingers crossed for an email and coupon on Monday as well as long awaited enhancements!

Is it possible for Russ to come back to us and let us know when we may receive the coupon?

There has been no recent update to us to let us know what is going on.

The new version is “hidden” in the FTM website, and we are all in the dark as to what is happening.

It would be nice for Russ to come out and let us know when we may receive the email with the coupon.

Come on, Russ, give us an update.

I noticed at the introduction of this blog, Russ says “For our valued Family Tree Maker 2008 customers” and ending says “we want to support you the best we can”.

If this is correct, please Russ, can we have your comment on the email and coupon.

I did get the first email, I live in the U.S., I’ve seen FTM 2009 advertised in the Ancestry.com store and on Amazon, and I haven’t received my coupon.

I really don’t think that anyone from Ancestry is looking at any of our comments, otherwise surely someone would have commented.

It would appear their servers can not handle all the traffic attempting to download the free update of FTM 2009. Guess I will have to try back early in the morning to see if the problem has been resolved. To add, the link that is supposed to take you to the software download does indeed display an error page and trying to get to the store at Ancestry also does the same thing, at least for me it did.

September 9, 2008 at 7:19 pm
Terry Triplett

That’s all well and good but I got my e-mail with the code to down load 2009 and guess what, the link doesn’t work. I like many others do not like FTM 2008 and all I can say is I am glad I didn’t delete my old 2006 version of FTM

You guys are getting the option to download the upgrade? My only option seems to be having the disc shipped.

I received an email at 7:30 tonight that I could get the free 2009 update. At 9:00 until 11:45 I attempted to click on the provided link to obtain the software. I finally was rewarded with a message that read “due to popular demand, I could not receive the offer at this time. Check back later.” When is later???? I am very disappointed that FTM did not fulfill their offer.

William L DeCoursey

I am a registered owner of FTM 2008 which I purchased about 6 months ago on disk. I received a message that I could obtain a 2009 update to take care of problems and flaws with the 2008 version. The URL for the message that I receive fails to work. I would like to have the free copy of FTM 2009 set to me on disk to William L. DeCoursey, 1735 19th Terrace NW, New Brighton, MN 55112. – My phone number is 651-633-5759. Thank you.

I too have wasted way too much of my time clicking on a link, only to be rewarded with “Due to the high popularity of our FTM 2009 free upgrade offer, we are unable to fulfill your order at this time. Please check back later.Thank you, The Generations Network, Inc.” Another example of a your mouth writing checks your backside can’t deliver. IMHO

I am getting e-mails for free upgrade.

My 2008 NEVER worked on my XP PC – can not even open it to fix.

I now have a new PC with Vista 64 bit and I heard that the new FTM 2009 will not work on Vista 64 bit.

September 10, 2008 at 4:53 pm
Kathie

They are trying to solve the problems with the free upgrade.

It seems all new PC are sold with Vista – more and more with Vista 64 bit.

See below – I will order anyway. Note they are sending CD – you will not be able to download.

Dear Kathleen,

We appreciate your message.

The problem with the free FTM 2009 upgrade page is being addressed by our developers and should be corrected shortly. The upgrade is not for a download, but the coupon gives you the purchase price of the program off of an order for the new version, so it will be sent on a CD.

Regarding your new computer, unfortunately we do not support 64-bit Operating Systems at this time. We apologize for any inconvenience.

There have been reports that the program will run on 64-bit, but problems are many and since it’s unsupported, our support staff cannot help with any problems that may arise. For this reason we do not recommend purchasing FTM if you run a 64-bit system.

If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know.

Are you kidding me? So basically anyone who’s bought a computer in the last year is going to have problems with the program? What a freaking mess.

This, regrettably, seems to exude the aura of “TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE. As an orgiginal user of Banner Blue FTM the software has made some commendable vchanges over the years. the FTM2008 was an object lesson in regression. Deleting many facilities which have become “standard” in geneological software over the years. New users may be awed by the gloss, but I am convinced that you have now alienated a large part of your previously loyal customer base with the “cut-down” features of 2008. Perhaps with FTM 2009 you are hoping toredress the balance. Time, and your balance sheets, will tell. I will not be investing further in this product.

I have a question. I am only just wanting to purchase FTM. I can only find 2008 (and after reading all this, I don’t know if I want it). If I buy 2008, am I going to get the 2009 upgrade free since 2008 is the only version available “down under” at the moment?

Same story for me – I am in Australia and a registered user (although you wouldn’t know it as the program does not indicate a. if is a registered copy & b. who it is registered to, in the “About FTM” screen under the Help menu – there’s a tip for you FTM team!)and I haven’t received an email that supposedly went out last week, according to the Gould Genealogy newsletter that comes from South Australia. I enclose the relevant section below, in Quotes:

“Free FTM 2009 now available to FTM 2008 Users – for a limited time
Ancestry.com has sent the email so that Family Tree Maker 2008 users who registered a US or Canadian version of the software can get a free copy of FTM 2009. The email contains a unique link and coupon code to be used during checkout at the Ancestry.com store to get the free Family Tree Maker 2009. The free Family Tree Maker 2009 CD will come to your mailbox – it is not a download.

If you registered a US or Canadian 2008 version of Family Tree Maker and didn’t receive the email, Ancestry.com suggests that you let them know at the Ancestry.com blog in a comment.

If you are in the UK, Australia and New Zealand and didn’t receive your email last week, please let them know.”

There you have it FTM team, I didn’t get any notification from you and please consider this my official “letting you know” notice.

A further bit of feedback: The distribution of this update has been appallingly badly handled.

I am also waiting for the email from Ancestry offering the free upgrade from 2008 to 2009.I bought 2008 when it was first offered to the public from Ancestry.com., and registered the product with them. I use the web search frequently, so I do know I am registered.

I wrote to the customer help address nearly a month ago, and was given the generic answer that they had just began sending out the free upgrade emails. I then called Ancestry as the answer in the email surely didn’t answer my question of concern about whether or not I would get the free upgrade. I’m still waiting for that email.

Still also waiting for an email for my upgrade to 2009 … it is now 9/12/2008. Reviewed the list of changes and I am not optomistic … still see no indication that indexing of reports has been added BACK into the program (was there in FTM 16). Would have loved to have been involved in beta testing … how does one get included? I did make a request, but did not get a reponse. As a former software instructor and tech writer of instructional materials would love to have some input!

I would think you would have a better system to provide this upgrade to you customers. Your first try resulted in a overloaded website and shut down. Your second attempt has the same problem. You would better serve your customers by sending out a DVD/CD upgrade.

So I tried again and was able to get into the store- it first told me that there was 129 minutes to wait and 1355 people waiting. I actually only waited less than 5 mins and it came up for shopping- I entered my code and then signed in to my ancestry account and my free upgrade was processed and I was not charged shipping. I received an email confirmation about 7 mins later. I live in Canada. Process was pretty quick and once I got in simple

Still no email advice to FTM 2009 for me here in Oz!

The news about lack of Vista x64 support is ***EXTREMELY*** disturbing…. Vista x64 has been in commercial release for almost a year and three quarters now. I’ve had to keep one older laptop running Windows XP x86 just to support FTM properly and my with patience in doing that has just about run out (Vista x64 is SO much more stable than XP x86)!!!!!

I just purchased the 2008 version last week. I’ve been unable to go online with it or register. Now I just found this article. I guess my question is why are you still selling Family Tree Maker 2008 if there are so many known problems with it? What are my options since I couldn’t even get it to register for me?

I hate FTM 2008! I have downloaded the update patch, uninstalled, re-installed and still cannot register my product or use the web search feature. Don’t you think you should get 2008 working before moving on to 2009?

Oliver

I received the 2nd email today but no download link – it proceeded to checkout (coupon code = $0) and finished on a ‘invoice – print for your records’ but no download link?, does this mean I’ll get a CD in the post?, or did something go wrong?

September 15, 2008 at 10:29 pm
Terry Ingram

I also have registered FTM 2008 at least twice and have yet to receive an email or coupon to order. Myself and my brother-in-law regularly exchange information and files and he has already received his coupon and ordered his when I haven’t even received my FIRST email. With the technology available today, it would seem that even an initial email saying you acknowledge my registration would be appropriate. I realize that duplicating CD’s takes a little time, but a posted schedule of some sort would alleviate some questions for some of us. Please understand that some of us long-term FTM users are committed to your product, but lack of SPECIFIC communication does not promote faith that you can manage the technology. I might say that I am a retired 40 year employee of THE major IT corporation and this is NOT the way to leave customers dangling.

This is a message for New Zealand FTM 2008 users, especially those who purchased their copy from Beehive Books. You may have received an email re your free upgrade to FTM 2009. It does say you have to live in UK or Australia to take up the offer. Please ignore this – it does cover NZ residents! It also says that you have until 26 Sep to take up this offer. As US users now have until 15 Oct to take up their offer, I am sure that this date will apply to us too.
If you have not received your email, and you are lucky enough to be reading this, then here is information to help you. Please let any other FTM 2008 users you know this information too.
“It appears that quite a high proportion of AUS [and NZ] users opted-out of emails so we can not send them the email. Customers can call the call centre:
Australia 1-800-251-838 Monday – Saturday 9:00 am – 16:00 pm AEST

New Zealand
0800 442 100 Monday – Saturday 9:00 am – 16:00 pm AEST

The agent will direct them to http://www.ancestryshop.co.uk/freeupgrade and give them a unique code to enable them to order the upgrade disc. Please note there is a small charge of £2.95 that will cover P&P.

Let’s know if this works!!

I have used FTM from the original version. I have just received FTM2008 and based on the comments seen on this site I will not install it..period. FTM V16 has features that 2008 has eliminated…sorry I will eliminate upgrades to newer FTM “enhancements” from further consideration.

It would be nice if you also offered a free upgrade to version 16 users such as myself who did some homework and opted not to go the abomination known as FTM 2008. Yet we still stayed with FTM.
Even now my switch to 2009 will be predicated on whether or not I hear positive feedback on what is being touted as a new and much needed improvement to the merge feature.

This advice may assist?

Here is information for those in Australia and New Zealand who did not receive a free upgrade email. This information comes from their International Office:

A high proportion of AUS and NZ users opted-out of emails so we can not send them the free upgrade email. Customers can call the call centre:

Australia
1-800-251-838 Monday – Friday 9:00 am – 16:00 pm AEST

New Zealand
0800 442 100 Monday – Friday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm NZT

The agent will direct them to http://www.ancestryshop.co.uk/freeupgrade and give them a unique code to enable them to order the upgrade disc. Please note there is a small charge of £2.95 that will cover P&P.

Here are instructions for updating your email preferences:

http://ancestry.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ancestry.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1073

What that means is if you registered your FTM 2008 but ticked the box to say “don’t send me any information” Ancestry.com will respect what you ticked and won’t send you the email with instructions for updating. Fair enough as that is what you told them to do

So if you haven’t received an email and have registered FTM 2008 then ring the toll free number and they will sort it on the phone

I understand that the offer closes around 26 September.

Good news – I order the free cd upgrade to FTM 2009 on 9-13-2008 and today, 9-18-2008, it arrived. I think that is fast for something free.

I have not tried it yet – little gun shy. Never could get FTM 2008 to work on my XP PC. I use another product as my main genealogy software.

I have a VISTA 64 bit laptop. Was told by Ancestry 64 bit is not suppoeted. My husband has a Vista 32 bit PC – will try it there this week-end.

Yet another FTM 2008 user here who has still not received the email to upgrade… nothing in the spam box, either.

Is there some sort of schedule for this upgrade email that is supposed to be sent out?

At last- an email from Genealogy.com!
(must be registered then). Special Offer on FTM 2009 . Yes, after weeks of waiting…YES, YES….NOOOOOOOO! “Special Offer” DO I WANT TO BUY IT @ 39.95 with free shipping. Answer – NO. I would like an e-mail detailing the 2009 upgrade which to some extent rectifies the deficiencies of FTM 2008. It would be quite nice to have this before the 15th October cut-off point. I really wish you would get your “roll-out” strategy sorted. Please don’t ask me to fill out a customer satisfation survey… please, please don’t.

Have any of you complainers actually tried to call Ancestry support? I called the 800 number on the customer support tab in my ancestry account and was told that the next email will be sent the first week of October, and that if I didn’t receive the email to call after that and I will be sent the upgrade code.

I have not received any communication regarding this free upgrade. What I have received is an invitation to purchase FTM 2009. Is it your intention to sell as many copies as possible before offering the free upgrade? All I’ve had from FTM 2008 is aggravation and frustration, so much so that it makes family research a real effort and not enjoyable. I hope that this free upgrade will improve the situation because I will not buy it after the experience of 2008.

I’m in Australia and have received no e-mail offering a free upgrade, only one offering it at a price. How can I find out if I’m on the mailing list for the upgrade as I understand that it will only be offered for a short time?

I live in Australia, called the number, was given the voucher number, registered it as per the message and on payment of £2.95 will receive the upgrade disks in the mail.

I think this as close to a free upgrade as I will get.

Give it a go.

OREROCKON. There is a world outside the boundaries of the USA where 800 numbers are charged at international rates. Many of the “complainers” are UK, NZ, Australia. Existing customers are only asking that they are informed about, and assured that they are elegible for, an “update”. Receiving an offer to purchase at full price suggests that you are on the customer database. I now know about the “second round of emails” scheduled for October. I have been sent a response which stated that “We will assume your issue has been resolved if we do not hear from you within 72 hours”. 72 hours? ,and what side of October might that be? Come on people, use some common sense instead of “sometime, maybe, never”. As you state yourself – IF you don’t get the e-mail… IF, IF, IF…

As per the posting for a free upgrade from 2008 to 2009 (I have pasted the posting at the bottom of this e-mail).

I have been a long time user of FTM and currently have FTM 2008 so I think I fall in the “Free Upgrade” catagory.

Where is it?

Karen Adams

Sincerely,

It is now 6pm in UK 25th Sept and still no email but I did telephone the UK Ancestry help line 0800 404 9723 and it was answered almost immediately by Katie who was in Utah and she sorted me out with the upgrade code. I must say that the customer service was excellent and Katie was delightful to deal with. After the recent difficulties it did a lot to restore my faith in FTW.
Hopefully the upgrade, ordered quickly and easily, will arrive in the next few weeks and I do not object to paying the £2-95 postage fee.

Hey guys. Welcome to the real world. The Ancestry people don’t make any money peddling software at $30 a pop; the real money is in subscriptions to their databases. We get the dregs. Even in California we don’t get the upgrade e-mails. Learn to deal with it.

speaking of blogs
I am not sure if it is included with 2008 or maybe you have it included with 2009 or maybe you are giving it some future thought. What I would like to see is a master Blog that would include all my Family Tree’s, which there are 4 of: Family Tree – A
and Family Tree B and Family Tree – C
and Family Tree – D
What I would like to see is a master Blog that would include all of my Family Tree’s each one would keep be a separate set of Charts and Reports and I would like the ability to make an updates to affect one in Family Tree A that would affect B, C, and D.if they included the same person in all 4 Groups
I realize that I may have to go back and re-create the charts and Reports, for all 4 groups.Yet the changes that I would make for all Family Tree’s would be taking care of with one shot.

I didn’t receive an email offering a free upgrade to FTM 2009 that I know of even though I have been using the program for at least ten years. Instead I purchased FTM 2009 and have been thoroughly disappointed because, despite all attempts (firewall off etc), it won’t let me register. The FTM live help was very friendly but sent me an irrelevant fix for FTM 2008. Any suggestions? FTM doesn’t answer emails and calling during business hours is difficult at best.

Since I can’t register the program I can’t use many of its features.

All-in-all I’m totally disappointed with Ancestry/FTM 2009. The only saving grace is that FTM 2008 still works. How do you get a refund?

October 7, 2008 at 4:08 pm
Glen

Enough is enough I fear, FTM is going down the pan, no support, no working product, FTM2008 a disaster, FTM2009 the same from what I have read. I’m off to seek alternatives – any idea’s folks ?

Well, I feel like a flaming fool!!! I thought the 2008 FTM WAS the latest version, so I recently purchased it…for about $70…with the promise that I would get a 3-month Ancestry.com membership. NOT SO! I cannot access anything online via the program because apparently the program is not compatible with Windows Vista, although the box says it is!!! What do I do? Will the place I purchased this take it back? I absolutely HATE the format and refuse to enter any data into this program. I really don’t want it!!! I can’t upload a 2009 to see if I like it better because….you guessed it…my program isn’t speaking to the internet and tells me there is NO CONNECTION!

My last purchased version before the 2008 was Version 16. I like it and I like the format. I may have to revert back to it as soon as I can dump this piece of trash I purchased. By the way, don’t presume to tell us you have changed things to help us! If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Mine wasn’t “broke”! I just stupidly thought an upgrade would be nice. It isn’t. I think you understand. I await your assistance, please.

2nd post: By the way, I have called the 800 number and it is ALWAYS busy…night and day. There is another # that charges $2 per minute, but I still could get no one on the phone. Someone from our Historical Society informed me that Windows Vista and FTM 2008 are NOT compatible, although the box says they are, and there is a “patch” you can download from somewhere that should fix the problem…..but where is the patch? Also, he told me that it doesn’t always work. Sometimes he has heard of it working, and sometimes it doesn’t. No rhyme or reason.

I will try to return mine to the store where I purchased it, along with copies from this blog to prove I am not making all this up. I may see if the a FTM2009 is available. Rather than go to all the trouble of waiting for a download I may never get…..that may not really work for a program I hate, I may see if the actual 2008 program is more to my liking and will work. Can anyone tell me if I will have the same compatibility problems with 2009? Thank you.

It appears that I am one of many that purchased FTM 2008 but have never received a free upgrade offer.
FTM 2008 was money down the drain as I promptly uninstalled since the ability to continue with my family “book” was no longer a function in the new version.
Regardless, I never received any offer for a free upgrade. I am not interested in a free upgrade to 2009 unless this feature has been restored. Has it been restored?
Thanks, Lucy in TN

Good News and Hope!

I am perhaps one of the most complicated cases för FTM 2009 upgrade!

I am an American living in Sweden who purchased FTM 2008 (and all other versions) through TWR in England. They special shipped to me the US version as I was not interested UK CD’s. This was the only one they had and had actually purchased it themselves for evaluation before the UK version was released.

I registered this program in august 08.

I also recieved the first E-mail from FTM and the 2:nd telling me to ignore the first.

I recieved a third E-mail regarding the free offer, followed the directions, and got an immediate confirmation of the order.

About 3 weeks later the CD arrived in my mailbox from the US with both postage and custom fees paid! (and yes… 3 weeks is not an unusual transport time for a non-priority package from the US to Sweden)

I have to thank FTM for their service… at least to me.

so I was happy with FTM2006 and I gladly purchased a copy of FTM2008, and I am sorry to say If ever I took a retrograde step this was it.

I regret ever even comtemplating getting 2008, now I hear all registered users of 2008 will be getting a free copy of 2009.

I only purchased 2008 amatter of weeks ago and did anyone tell me there was an upgrade in the offing, no I was not told if I had been I would have waited till the new version was issued.

Why the format of 2006 was abandoned I have no Idea. the pressnt version appers to be so retrogade I can see why FTM2009 is required.

I can assure you this is the last time I purchase such a program from you.

I had ordered FTM 2008, however, there were problems with that program so I sent it back and have continued with FTM 2006, Version 16. Now that you have fixed the problems, can I re-order and use it as a continuum for FTM 2006, Version 16?
I hope to hear from you.

Thank-you

I purchased FTM 2008 Platinum in Sept/2008 and can’t get on-line with it to Register it or register for the Ancestry subscription. I tried your various suggestions, but no joy. Can you help me or give me a contact for assistance?

Thanks

It’s funny that I keep coming here every day to see if someone from FTM actually responds to their own boards. I work for a major software company and if we ever treated our customers this way, I’d feel ashamed. I read post after post of people asking politely for info about something that this company offered to make amends for. Now it seems that they need to make amends for trying to make amends. I have 2008, I use it all the time. I started on 2006 but didn’t really get into using the program until 2008 so I don’t have the same feelings about the loss of functionality from 2006 to 2008. I registered (and reregistered) many times and I still haven’t received my email either. Now hearing that people are calling and FTM is telling people that the offer is over is ridiculous. How can any respectable company offer their customers a free version, completely ignore their own boards, where people are asking for help, and then deny people when they finally get through on the phone. For some people, the phone call ends up costing people money. This is just not right and it’s sad. I’m sure there is some legal action the customer’s of 2008 can take. Are there any lawyers reading this board? Class action lawsuits usually get a company moving. I guess it wouldn’t be so bad if someone from FTM would just respond and tell us what is going on. And for future reference, please do not think your customers are idiots. If you offer something…deliver it, or don’t offer it. It’s a hard economy right now and the fact that people are paying for the service to do their research is hard enough for us. Again, it’s sad. When your competition is so far below you, software companies become complacent and believe that customers will stick with you because there is no place else to go. Unfortunately, that’s usually the case, but eventually, a company will come around that will seize this opportunity to build a simple but solid program that treats their customers with respect. I only hope, for your sake, that you realize that your customers should be your focus before you lose them all. Between the disrespect for your customers, the weak development of your programs, your obvious lack of customer research, and you’re diminishing “free trial periods”, it looks like you have become another corporate machine that cares more about your bottom line than you do with sharing your customer’s love of researching their family histories. I’ll keep checking this board every day to see if someone in your company decides to care and give us what you originally promised. We honestly hope you become the company that we used to love.

I am very upset at the way I have been treated by the Family Tree Maker Team.

I read this blog with interest and have waited patiently for my email to update from FTM 2008 to FTM 2009.

In September I emailed to see what was going on and was told that I would be contacted by Ancestry.com.

I have chased again this week to be told the upgrade has expired and I do not qualify for it any longer.

I would like someone to explain how an offer for the users of FTM 2008 can expire if they were not sent the email in the first place… We have put up with a substandard product for the past 12 months – I went back to using FTM 2006 so was looking forward to FTM 2009 but now feel very let down.

Has anyone else actually got their upgrade?

I don’t believe anyone received a free upgrade to our inferior versions of Family Tree Maker 2008.
I too have reverted back to my 2006 version of this software. I shall not be buying Family Tree Maker 2009 because I don’t believe it will be any better than the 2008 version.
Our queries and complaints have been ignored so there is little chance of an improvement.
When my 2006 version no longer receives support I shall be looking for other genealogy software.

Ihave awaited my e-mail concerning the 2008 upgrade to 2009. I have phoned to ask about progress. I have sent e-mail and posted on another blog where others are also enquiring….. What do you have to do to get a response from ancestry???? On the 2nd Sepyember RUSSEL you said

‘Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.’

I was told when I phoned this weekend that it was too late the offer was finished???!!!! so…… I AM ONE DISAPPOINTED CUSTOMER AMONG MANY THAT HAVE BEEN LET DOWN.

So what IS the deal? I bought FTM2008 in February 2008 and installed it in my Vista machine, right here in the US of A (California). It IS registered. I can do web searches.

There has been NO email to me regarding anything about FTM2009 – free or otherwise.

A casual surfing of the Internet brought me to this site today (12 Nov 2008).

So the questions after 264 other postings are: How do I get my FREE copy of FTM2009? Or is the supposed “offer” of a free copy no longer available?

I also bought the 2008 version around this time a year ago (actually, August 2007), finally installed it during August 08, couldn’t register it, then promptly had a major computer failure. Have just installed it again today, found that I could not register it again till I found the patch.

Looks like I will be out in the cold as well – too bad that they do have my email address and I paid good money early.

I just listened in on the webinar on the Family Tree Maker 2009. I have been using your software since I started my research on my family. I have copies of every version since I started with version 7. I have not yet received an email telling me about a free upgrade to version 2009. How do I go about getting my code to get my free upgrade. I have stayed with you through the years, even having to go out and purchase a second copy of 2008 when I had problems getting it loaded and working last year.

How can I get my code to get my free upgrade? I don’t understand why I did not get an email. Not only am I registered with Family Tree Maker, but I am also a member of Ancestry.com and have been for over 3 years.

Thank you,

I attended the webinar last wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed, I purchased FMT 2008 a few months ago, but had such a problem registering, I was in various parts of your website to find out how the register. Oh my gosh, I’ve been doing research for over nine years and bought FTM 2008 over the summer along with a new laptop to work on. Because my daughter was getting married and we were busy with wedding plans I didn’t begin to use either until just this week. I bought FTM 2008 because I used it when I first started my genealogy but now I’m really upset that this program isn’t any good, users of 2008 don’t seem to be getting the free upgrade to 2009 and some people have mentioned that the upgrade ruined their computers. I’m on a brand new computer and I don’t want to mess it up with bad software. I couldn’t even register my FTM 2008, it won’t connect. I’m not sure what to do now. Should I look for new genealogy software? I just installed FTM 2008 tonight and I’m not able to upgrade to 2009? Is this going to be a safe program on my new computer? This is really disappointing and distressing. It sure put a damper on my excitement of being able to get my years of research into the computer and share with my family.

Please advise and give instructions if this is possible.

I just looked at some other requests for registered FTM 2008 users to get the free 2009 upgrade. I went back to my file and found the gift from FTM “We’ll soon be releasing Family Tree Maker® 2009. When we do, we’ll send you an email that will tell you how to get this latest version for FREE.” (8/8/08)Then on 9/10/08″So many people have tried to upgrade to Family Tree Maker 2009 that it overwhelmed our online store site. We’re very sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

In the next few days we’ll send you an email with a new link and coupon code, plus instructions for getting your free upgrade before October 15th” That was it, no link, no code.
Please provide this upgrade information to me.
ThanX,

I posted last night that I was very nervous about installing FTM 2008 after reading the blog but I wanted to say that I’ve now got it installed and after downloading the patch the program is working great. I bought the 2008 FTM and registered but did not receive a coupon. I was one of the dissatisfied users who backed out of 2008 after my files were corrupted (which I still have not receovered from) to FTM VS 16. I still have lots of clean up to do. I am sure all my note statements where I had lots of my research were truncated. Please add me to your list for the free 2009 version of FTM. Thank you.

I let this get away from me, expecting that some additional information would be forth coming. I have been a fan and user of FTM since the 90′s. I was one of those that had FTM 2008 in my hands for months until the patch came thru to allow me to successfully move from FTM 16 to FTM 2008. But I seem to have been lost in the cracks. Is the new version still being provided to people who purchesed FTM 2008 when it first came out?

Also, I have been a subscriber to the US Census for many years(if that counts for anything)

Very interesting. I just surfed to this board for the first time to learn that it is not just me , since I like many of you made the mistake of loading my genealogy files to FTM 2008. Each time I attempt to work with the files I become so disgusted that I just close it down. That has been my plight for the past year, I upgraded to FTM 2008 in December of 2007. I did not know that there was a promised free upgrade to FTM 2009 and have never received any notification. Under the parameters outlined I would assume that I am entitled to not receive the upgrade as it appears that others have not received it either. I did not renew my subscription to Ancestor.com this year as there is little need for me to search for information to input to such a flawed program.

Knowing that their organization developed and sold such a flawed program don’t you think someone in the organization would have initiated an effort to repair the damage with their loyal customer base. Does anyone in the organization read these comments or are they just funneled into a vast delete file? I dont see any recent responses. I guess they are too busy selling FTM 2009.

Family tree maker team!!!!! Why is no one replying in any form to the questions being asked about upgrades to 2009 to quote from your own opening comments on this blog:

Don’t worry if you didn’t receive that first email; you’ll probably still receive the full offer, and if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version.

EMAIL..mansoor39@live.com

I got your contact and would like to share a very important matter with you. If it does not interest you, I apologize for the inconvenience . I am Mr Mansoor, I am an average-aged man of 43 years of age, a Persian of Iranian origin; I work in Iraq with the U.S. military as a translator. I have evidence to show after you.
In one of our military operations in Iraq, we have found a safe in a large house of a great businessman in the Iraqi city of Tikrit. The safe contained a large sum of money, U.S. dollars, ie U.S. $ 24 Million. We immediately have kept this safe in a safety place with three other American soldiers. After long deliberations between us whether we should put these funds to American authorities in charge dead place or not, we all decided to share these funds between us. For sharing, each of us has received the sum of U.S. $ 6 million.
For my part because of security problems in Iraq, I decided to arrange with private security guards in Iraq to transfer my share of these funds outside Iraq, specifically in London.
I put the money in a package as family and I have coded which means that nobody knows that the package contains money except me.
So I contact to see if you can help me get the package from London and transfer it to your country or I would invest the funds in profitable areas.
I give you some percentage of these funds for me to accept, the percentage we will discuss when I receive your reply.
Iraqi insurgents are against me so they are looking for me to kill me because I do translations for the Americans military. I do not go out any way without the U.S. military to avoid the worst. I do not use phones either not receiving calls here. I use only the Internet and walkie-talkies to communicate with soldiers with whom I work.
If this transaction is concluded, I will resign from this work because to live here in Iraq is too risky.
I thank you and I am expecting your reply.mansoor39@live.com

Hi
I have FTM 2008 which I purchased in June this year and am experiencing a heap of problems with it and do not get any replies to my queries. I check for updates and am informed that my program is up to date and have not been advised of any patches you might have released. I have just found out that this program should have been replaced by you with FTM2009 version. As per your August info I have never recieved this offer even though my program was registered with you at the time of loading. I have checked all your newsletters which I recieve regularly to no avail and have never had any mail with regard to this in my Spam filter which I check daily. Could you plese advise me as to exactly when I will recieve FTM 2009. & also if it includes the appropriate manual as I purchased the one to go with FTM 2008 and assume that the FTM2009 version is not compatable with FTM2008

I registered FTM 2008 when I bought and installed it on my new computer earlier this year. I still have not received an email re the free update. Why not?

An unrelated question is whether there is any way to display a tree in the family view in 2008.

I have tried for 3 days to register my 2008 Family tree maker and can’t. I have entered so much of my family and am afraid to reload the program for fear I’ll loose the info. I am so disappointed in the program because I can’t register and get information. Please help

I’ve been a registered FTM 2008 for several months and helped test various patches for this program earlier in the year. I haven’t received any message or coupon regarding an upgrade to 2009. Have they just given up on us?

I too have not received any information about the 2009 package. I have been a long time customer with FTM. It appears there are more issues with the email than with the 2008 package. What’s up?

By the way… I have also been a long time member of Ancestry.com and now have family trees in both areas. How do I make this easy on myself and download the Ancestry family tree to my FTM tree and vise verse?

I’m not supposed to know this but my husband has bought me FTM2009 for Christmas.I currently have 2008, and no free upgrade offer. If the upgrade offer should happen, I would like to know if I will be given some sort of a credit since I will already have 2009. My husband is not into genealogy so he has no way of knowing about this freebie, and I can’t tell him, or he’ll know that I found out quite by accident that he got me this for Christmas

I just got back into my 2008 Family Treee Maker and it cannot connect to Ancestry.com etc. I tried to install a patch and it ruined my whole File so I had to uninstall and reinstall. HELP! I was never notified about an upgrade to 2009.

I purchased FTM 2008 (Platinum Edition) late in 2008 and installed and registered the software Oct 30, 2008 (lot of trouble registering, had to finally download a patch). I have yet to receive an email regarding the update to 2009 and only heard about the offer through magazine articles sometime after I had bought 2008. If I had known about the problems people are having with FTM2008 and now getting with FTM2009 I would probably have have looked elsewhere for genealogy software. As an additional matter, I also never received the Ancestory Magazine that was supposted to be part of the Platinum Edition purchase.

Never received the email, forcing my wife to purchase the 2009 version. A reformat of the main PC here was then followed by the FTM V16 CD being unreadable in the drive, nor on other PC’s

The only option was to use 2008 (no way!) or buy a new version of 2009.

Whats it been, 4 or 5 months now since the announcement was made – long enough to get our free upgrades, but nope, no sign of them.

It sounds as though I am among the many registered users of the 2008 version, who are not only unhappy with the original product and have raised many queries, direct with the authorities, but have yet to receive the obligatory email advising me of the 2009 FREE upgrade. I have often tried the menu button to see if there have been any updates, but have been told there are NONE, and yet the authorities have been secretly getting a 2009 version up and running. Here in the UK the Platinum version of 2009 is for Sale, but no mention is showing on the packet if it can be an upgrade to a 2008 version.
I would love to hear from the programmers what improvements they have come up with ?
Feel free to email me direct !!

I also purchased the 2008 version, couldn’t register, etc. I used it long enough to note than it is a stripped down version–obviously replacing usefulness with worthless CDs with come with the program. I can do better charts, etc. with my old version 11 which would allow me to use my wide format printer to produce great 13 x 19 charts. I uninstalled 2008 and am quite happily using ver. 11. I suggest that Ancestry has removed features to make room for integration with their web sites. As for updates, or emails related to any updates, I have received none–couldn’t register! I’m looking elsewhere for software.

I purchased FAmily Tree Maker 2008 last spring/ summer and began my free subscription 22 August 2008. I did receive an email for the free upgrade but I cannot find it and I would like to upgrade to 2009. When I received the email I was working so hard and fast on my family information that I did not want to risk implementing an upgrade. I now have sufficient back-up to do this. I am enjoying the genealogy research. Thank you, April MacLeod

I purchased Family Tree Maker 2008 in December 2007. It was registered in January 2008. I never received the free upgrade e-mail.

Today I called Family Tree Maker support to inquire about this. They told me that the free upgrade offer ended in September 2008. They refused to give me this upgrade even though they told me they found my registration in their own computer records!

Well now I am mad. What kind of customer service is this to make this kind offer and then yank it away in such a short time? I can understand setting a deadline but less than one month? Ancestry.com needs to realize that e-mail is not a reliable way to get the message out. Spam filters can block these messages. Most people wouldn’t notice this blog, I only discovered it recently. Ancestry.com needs to give more time for this upgrade!

Probably the biggest problem that I have with Family Tree Maker 2008 is the constant “No Internet Connection”. I purchased FTM08 on 8-Feb-2008 and have never been able to connect to the Internet with it no matter what I do including adding the application to my firewall allow list. This obviously has also prevented me from registering the product. Given that, how may I obtain my free upgrade to 2009? -Thanks

Hello Michelle,

I am quite frustrated at the moment as I had never received any notice of my upgrade (although I was told many times that I would be getting it). I am now told that the time is for the upgrade to 2009 is over and I will not be receiving any help from Ancestry over the agonizing, absolute defeat that I received from your version 2008.

I am a member of ancestry.com and have used Family Tree Marker since the 1st edition.

I was never able to register on line as my version 2008 would never bring the registration page up on my screen. I registered through customer service, or at least that is what I was told.

Have I been abandoned by your company?

Have I not complained loudly enough? I thought that I would give y’all the benefit of the doubt and allow you to resolve the many problems but now I see that all that got me was out in the cold.

I am very disappointed in the 2008 product but I am even more disappointed in being abandoned.

I really hate to have to end a very long standing trust and relationship in this manner but I feel that Ancestry is giving me no choice.

Sincerely,
Joan Renfrow

I’ve been a registered owner of FTM for many years, but I never received an offer for a free upgrade to FTM 2009. I’m getting real tired of my FTM 2008 crashing every five minutes.

I purchased the 2008 version from ‘Ancestry’ before it was shipped. I held off installing it after reading comments about problems with the 2008 version. I installed & registered it a few months ago after I read that I would get a “FREE” upgrade to the 2009 version.

As with others, I NEVER received that 2009 “FREE UPGRADE” offer, although I have had ‘every’ Family Tree Maker version since #1 and have been an ‘Ancestry’ subscriber for years.

I am quite aggravated as per this and suppose I have to continue to use my 2006 version as I cannot trust ‘Ancestry’ with newer versions or broken written statements. They are real quick with sending e-mails so I can ‘purchase’ the 2009 version though!

My son-in-law sent me this link. I have Family Tree Maker 2008 and although it hasn’t been a total loss, I am experiencing so many issues. I have paid to have it looked at because I thought it had something to do with my computer. I was told it was the program. The biggest issue I am having with it right now is that whenever I have to enter/OK I am kicked out of the program. Please consider sending me the 2009 upgrade so that I may continue to enjoy my years of research. I look forward to hearing from you.

I registered my 2008 version and I don’t remember getting an e-mail about 2009 update. Please contact me and let me know if there is an update version of 2008, and if the upgrade to 2009 is free.
I have been an Ancestry.com and Family Tree Maker customer for many years and I can’t afford to buy the newest version of Family Tree Maker.
Please let me know if you have the free version of it.
Thank you,
Mrs. Homen

I purchased Family Tree Maker 2008 when it was released. I never installed it because there were problems moving my data over from an older PC. Lucky that I had made hard copies of all of my data because it looks like the data has been lost from the PC and will have to be completely reentered. Meanwhile, I just found out from a geneology friend that there is already a 2009 version out. I had saved all of the Family Tree Magazine Newsletters I had been receiving (but not yet reading). Scanning through them, I found that version 2009 had been offered for free, but I never received one of the coupons. Maybe this was because I never installed/registered the v. 2008? What do I need to do to get the free v. 2009 now?

Sincerely,
—Frank Brill

I also registered my copy of FTM 2008 in August and on e-mailing them inquiring about my free upgrade was first informed that I had not registered my copy. then that the offer was no longer available as time had run out. that is not what their web site claims, in fact it claims that Quote “if for some reason you don’t, we’ll make sure you have a way to get the free version”.
I have e-mailed again demanding my upgrade, Ill keep you informed. This is no way to treat their loyal customers and you should all complain and complain until you receive the free upgrade or use the small claims court to make them comply

I also have been dissatisfied with FTM 2008. I’ve used FTM since version 4 or so and have always loved it, until 2008. I did not receive any word of a free upgrade until I stumbled onto this blog. I believe that I did register my FTM 2008 in Jan. 2008. Is there any way to still get a free upgrade? I really hate to have to purchase 2009 to see if it fixes the things that I miss from the older versions.
I am active in my local genealogical organizations and used to teach classes on using FTM before this 2008 version came along. I have not been comfortable recommending FTM to newbies since then.

I still can’t understand why I have not received the 2009 version. I never received any coupons etc.

I am also interested in the World Wide registration. I was a member, at $150 in 2007-2008 however the increse in price in 2008 and the present economy resulted in my needing to drop it. I would be intereste in re-joining at the $150 level.

Looking forward to some positve results. Dr. Atinsky
